There's a phrase I came up with a while back and have been spreading around various reaction channels: Michael Jackson may be the King of Pop, but Jeff Lynne is the Einstein - the greatest genius pop music has ever seen. If you like it, feel free to use it. I feel he's important enough to deserve some evangelists, given how apparently under-appreciated he his (as someone else here has pointed out, only recently inducted into the songwriters hall of fame - on the 5th ballot?!?) Even aside from his amazing and prolific songwriting, great for all the reasons you listed, his production work with ELO and others was astoundingly innovative, foreshadowing many aspects of modern music that are taken for granted.

Lets not forget about the immense contribution from his band mates also.
There's a 2001 live performance of "Turn to Stone" and when Lynne gets to the speed chorus he nails it, the camera zooms right on on his face afterwards, and he's got the *biggest* grin like "yeah I still got it."

I believe that Jeff Lynne described that album as a bad dream that a banker type of guy had. I like that way of looking at it. I also like to think of it as a chance to indulge in the idea of going back in time to find lost love. Then you realize that it will be okay. That is what the song Hold On Tight is about. Overall, Time is one of ELO's best albums. The best version is the full uncut album. That is the version I like best.

and Jeff wrote it in 3.5 weeks. Not all about him tho. Kelly Groucut (bass) was responsible for the harmony, Richard Tandy's list of keyboard kit took up a good part of the back cover if I recall reading it aged 15. Bev was a very under-rated drummer who went on to play with Sabbath and when Jeff revived ELO in later years he needed best part of an orchestra to do what Mik and the other two did. All this talent plus Jeff's production which was why he was asked to join Wilbury's.

When I first heard this as a kid, I didn't interpret it as a love song. To me, it felt more like the POV of a dog missing their owner every time they left, not knowing if or when they'd return. I still feel that way. 🐶

George Carlin did a comedy routine about that. "You ever seen a dog just standing there? He don’t know what he’s waiting for, but if it happens, he’ll be ready. Just a waiting and a waiting, waiting for you to come home. They don’t understand time. A dog doesn’t know the difference between an hour and a half or next week. He thinks you’re going to be gone forever. That’s the only time period dogs really understand, forever."

Elizabeth ~ I really enjoyed watching you react to ELO's 'Turn to Stone"! They are SO multi-dimensional that you HAVE TO listen to them over and over, just to absorb every little morsel of what's flying past you so quickly. Your musical knowledge and assessments are refreshing....I worked in the rock music industry for 30+ years, and ELO has - imo - never really been given all the credit due them. It is exciting to watch someone with musical knowledge discover something that excites them. Jeff Lynne is an incredible musician, with a wide array of people that he has played with, written for or produced.....the Travelling Wilburys - his band with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty - being the one that comes to mind after ELO. The deeper you dig, the brighter his 'qualifications' sparkle. He is a consummate perfectionist, and as can be seen, the quality of his productions leave little to be desired NOR required. ELO has played Wembley on several occasions, but perhaps 2017 was the finest of all (imo). There is a DVD of it, and youtube has offered selections from that show individually, but not the complete show. I'll post some of my go-to's for my 'happy music' moods, and hope that you'll see them (and that youtube lets me post them). I wish I could watch you watch these selections for the first time, just to witness your excitement and giddiness, which I know will be inevitable. The stage production is quite elaborate, but the quality of the music & the musicians keeps it from being the main focal point. One of the background singers is Melanie McDonald-Lewis, a woman you may already be familiar with. She adds SO much extra 'dimension' to their sound. And her husband is the lead guitarist (electric) who looks so happy! The lead violinist is Rosie Langley.....a virtuoso with seemingly no limitations, and her sister Amy is one of the lead cellists. I feel like I'm going to spoil all the excitement for you if I keep 'splainin everything, but a wiki search can fill in all the gaps. Enjoy ! Maybe I'll get to see your reactions to these songs. If not, maybe you can reply to my comment here . . . . . That version of Evil Woman is my favourite ELO video, amongst many greats
The phrase Elizabeth is searching for with the ‘harmonies’ is “call & response”. Lead vocal line, response in harmony. Actually she mentions call & response in the string section.
Got to do the whole Concerto For A Rainy Day......4 songs which includes Mr Blue Sky......20 minutes of pure class....
'Sweet Talking Woman' really hits the spot for me and for rich orchestral swells, 'Wild West Hero' is filled to the brim.
ELO's "wall of sound" would come on the radio during the 70s, you knew exactly who it was, it would make you stop what you're doing and put you in a good mood. Probably the single best thing many groups in the mid/late 70s did that is missing in today's new music. And to your question, "Shine a Little Love" is right there with Turn to Stone.
A lot of ELO’s albums were concept albums and told and overall story so as you listen from start to finish you hear the whole story.

There has been no band which do what ELO have done. They’re unique and quite brilliant!
Jeff Lynne is a master of songwriting. Perfectly conveys what he's feeling with the lyrics, but also with his chord choices and arrangements.
The pace and rhythm of this song is like a gallop - like someone up on a horse riding hard from town to town in search of their loved one, yearning for them and can't wait to see them again. The chorus is like slowing down to take a closer look, to search the crowds. Edit: On that note, you asked about our "favorite song" on the album. For me, it's "Wild West Hero"... so downright funky, but it's also about living our dreams, finding happiness and meaning in our life. One of my favorites band. These guys are so freaking fantastic and magical. ❤️ I still remember the first time i list "Xanadú" by those legends and Olivia Newton-John... I never enjoyed some better fit between two artists. They was awesome together, so skillful, so sweet, elegant and magnificent. ❤️
Mrs. Zharoff is going to have a BALL with this song, and I have a feeling this will be a regular for her playlist after this.
Sweet Talkin’ Woman, Night In The City, Starlight and Wild West Hero are all brilliant tracks too Elizabeth - but listening to the entire double album back to back sounds like a far better idea 😉

You’re welcome.
Jeff Lynne is a fan of the concept album. Meaning that the album as a whole builds on a theme and tells a story. Several of his albums do this with Secret Messages being about a man transported to the future. Eldorado is an album based on legends and fantasy around a dream of the City of Eldorado. It goes on. Also many songs transition from one song to the next so they connect together really well.

It's the concept album, Time, not Secret Messages, that is about a man being transported to the future.
For Elizabeth especially....I can't over-recommend 'Rockaria' by ELO. I mean, it'd be awesome, especially if Elizabeth were to sing along with the aria bits :)

At the start of the vocal stave of the sheet music for Rockaria it states in brackets "(Fake-it)". I suppose one could fake it in English, Italian or German.

Just play side 3 my lovely, A concerto for a rainy day, 19 minutes of mind boggling majesty from a musical genius that is Jeff Lynne. It’s lovely how you breakdown each moment of ELO’s music. I still hear different sounds from their music and I’ve listened to them for 40 odd years and a gazillion times over. Can’t wait for the next ELO reaction, remember “a concerto for a rainy day” you won’t be disappointed, peace and love from the UK 🇬🇧
Grew up listening to ELO and have never stopped... Listening to, not growing up Obviously...superb talent in Jeff Lynne ,your reaction Respectful and delightful How many bands can you sing along to and instantly know the words whilst recalling happy memories over the years ,? Not many! ELO are one, cheers
I remember hearing ELO the first time on vinyl back in the 70's. My mom had a wide array of music and I always liked the sound of their music. As I've gotten older I appreciate people like Jeff Lynn a whole lot more. Such bands as this are examples of true musical creation and dedication to music itself. I love watching you react to music, and feel it. Thank you for being who you are. You are a true gift to people that enjoy music.
With ELO's mix of rock and violin, it will do everything but Turn Elizabeth to Stone.

This comment made me think of something lude and possibly toxic that makes me laugh. I'll spare you for this reason but I think I can give the punchline. Hard as stones that could cut glass. Please forgive my humor. I'm a construction worker and it's a part of the culture and a requirement for the job. Lol.
"Sweet Talkin' Woman" was another single, but I really liked the interplay and cadence of Jeff's vocals with the multitracked chorus (which I think is also him) on "Sweet is the Night." The whole Concerto for a Rainy Day side is tip-top (they kicked off the sets of their last tours with "Standin' in the Rain"), but my sentimental childhood favorite is "Jungle." So fun, and a lovely sentiment -- "Wonderous is our great blue ship that sails around the mighty sun and joy to everyone that rides along."

Yes, I am pretty sure that all the vocals are Jeff multitracked. There's a good video doc on YT somewhere showing him recording stuff at home. Simply amazing. I believe he remade a lot of the early works because he was dissatisfied with the original production. Sounded pretty much perfect to me the first time around 🙂

@@RogerBarraud Kelly Groucutt was also on backing vocals. Listen to anything released before Face the Music and you won't find him anywhere because he hadn't yet replaced Mike du Albuquerque on bass. Groucutt's voice is, in my mind, essential to ELO's iconic sound.
Btw The song which follows from Turned to stone in the Out of the blue album is a song called It’s Over, which can also be found in the compilation album Flashback.
This one of the greatest all time albums, hard to believe people still haven't heard it.
You might consider ELO's Rockaria! It's about an opera singer discovering rock music. They even brought in a lady to sing the operatic parts.

Definitely Rockaria! from A New World Record and Eldorado Overture/Can't Get It Out Of My Head from Eldorado. The Eldorado album is a concept album that should be listened to in its entirety.
Well, in order to facilitate you listening to the rest of this great album as fast as possible, if you want one more ‘Out of the Blue’ song recommendation, I’d go with Jungle! It’s another very upbeat number, and my personal absolute favourite ELO song ever. I’m biased though - I can remember bouncing around the kitchen to it when I was very small as my Dad was doing the dishes 😂 For ELO’s wider catalogue, I’ll throw out some potential curveballs - ‘Eldorado’ has possibly the most dramatic vocal performance Jeff Lynne has ever done, I’ve seen people recommend ‘Rockaria’ and I can second that - it’s a fun and unique track that could technically be called a rock opera and anything off Time would be a treat but I’d put in for ‘The Bouncer’, a bonus track that finishes with some bombast and swing! But irregardless of what you choose, ELO reactions are always a treat and with Out of the Blue you can’t go wrong, a double-album of golden tracks - thanks for the analysis of its stunning opener and I can’t wait for the next one!
It’s so cool to see the music that I enjoyed as a teenager getting the appreciation that it deserves. ELO is pure musical genius.
0:43 that giggle encapsulated exactly how I felt the first time I heard ELO.
"The Showdown" is my absolute favorite. It's off a different album if you decide to check it out. I love ELO, they don't miss.

as you said Elo can take what are essentially sad or sombre lyrics and make them into a happy/feelgood song they are just amazing jeff lynn is a musical genius.
I was mesmerized when I saw ELO in concert in the mid 70s. I couldn't decide which instrument to focus on! Strings, guitar, bass, drums, vocals. All so wonderful!
I know how much you loved Mr. Blue Sky. It is the finale song on the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" suite on "Out of the Blue. Would love to see you react to the entire suite; that and I am sure many other fans would as well!

It is comprised of all four songs on the third side of “Out of the Blue” the last being Mr. Blue Sky. It was inspired by the terrible weather Jeff encountered in the Alps when he sat down to write the songs for the album. When the sun finally appeared it inspired Mr. Blue Sky.

This album and A New World Record are some of the finest work.
I absolutely love ELO and the works of Jeff Lynne. You can hear it in the music of Tom Petty, George Harrison and his work in the Traveling Wiburys. The layers of music going on is incredible with vocals and the orchestra. It’s fun to see Elizabeth’s excitement to listen to everything going on that most of us miss. She has the trained ear and background to recognize all this stuff. Neat learning what goes into quality and popular music!
Concerto For A Rainy Day - all 4 songs - absolute masterpiece!
I love your passionate reaction to every element of this song!

Amazing reaction and analysis!!! ❤
Depeche Mode - Home. One of the most beautiful vocal performances ever.
The live version of this that is on their channel is also amazing. Jeff's still got it even all these years later.
From this album definitely the whole "Concerto for a rainy day" even if you have listened to the biggest hit Mr Blue Sky already. It's a full set of intertwining four songs. Jeff hasn't been the most cheerful composer of upbeat songs (apart from a handful of 50's style rock'n'roll tracks like Do Ya, Beethoven, Don't bring me down) but instead a fantastic writer and singer of sad, melancholic songs of loneliness and longing. I recommend a couple of earlier masterpieces as well if you enjoy the sad parts as well: Eldorado + Finale (1974), Dreaming of 4000 (1973) and 10358 Overture (1971 and the first ever song done by ELO, they still perform this song live!).
"The dying embers of the night".......Jeff Lynne is a superb poet, lyricist, sound engineer, musician. He wears so many hats with genius synthesis.
New subscriber. I love your analysis. I've enjoyed this song for decades, and now I understand what I'm hearing so much better. And your delight is contagious. Thanks!!
One Summer Dream is a beautiful, evocative ELO track with a lovely melodic vocal line and some great choral work at the end.
Mr Blue sky was scientifically proven to be the most uplifting pop song ever. I was so happy to see you doing this song. ELO discovery was my first rock album. I was just starting to play the sax, and their layered harmonies grabbed me. It's like dinosauric Depeche Mode. In my opinion "The Diary of Horace Whimp" is their most underrated song. Give it a listen.
Thanks for helping me in my listening. I am glad to hear things I have been missing thanks to your videos. Love you!
Truly one of the greatest musical minds ever made 🪡🎩🔥
I love the way that ELO always has a flow and a sense of movement. The space ship works because it's like they blow in, give a commentary on the human condition and then; change of tempo and they're leaving again. It's like taking a musical journey of 4-7 minutes and then on to the next mood or exploration of feelings. I LOVE ELO.
