The strings have always been a big part of ELO's sound. They hit their peak during the disco era and the strings definitely helped them fit in and get a lot of airplay amidst all of that. Of course, Jeff Lynne's brilliant songwriting has always been their main draw. I hope you check out the album you were gifted. I think you'll really enjoy it. :)

What can you say, it's Jeff Lynne and ELO. IMO, ELO has the most songs that can get stuck in your head, this one included. Love how they use so many elements in their songs, especially the strings and cow bell. (More cow bell!) Their "Don't Bring Me Down" (my favorite of theirs), "All Around the World", and "Telephone Line" are ones to really get into. Another great song with strings is "Drops of Jupiter" by Train.

ELO got its name as they were Electric, and original line up features a "Light Orchestra" (basically a string quartet). A Feature they kept up to the album 'Time' The Album Discovery was nicknamed "Disco Very" by some of the band, but after Roy Wood left (the first album) there was certainly a dash of the danceable in some of their songs Peaking with Discovery.

There was nobody like them...I saw them early to mid-seventies with the orchestral elements incorporated into the band. They mixed '50s rock 'n' roll with classical, disco, funk, etc. They had a bass player named Kelly Groucutt who shared vocals with Lynne and sang the falsetto parts on tour particularly on my favorite song, "Rockaria" which was a perfect blend of rock 'n' roll and opera/classical...definitely worth checking out.

ELO , Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Doors , Fleetwood Mac. The 70s were eclectic with incredible musicianship Checkout Mr Blue Sky or Sweet Talkin Woman ... great ELO songs that everyone knows but never remembers 😂

RARELY a good idea to make a live version of a song your first listen. Live versions of pop/rock songs are almost always the band attempting (but nor quite succeeding) to recreate their studio sound... having said that, ELO's small string section. (which has ALWAYS been a part of the band, hence the "Orchestra" part of the name) has always done an amazing job recreating their sound on stage.

ELO were very successful and rather unique. They had a string of top ten singles and albums in the UK. Jeff Lynne is a songwriter, singer, multi‐instrumentalist and successful music producer, and the driving force behind the band after Roy Wood left early on. He's written for, performed on and produced albums for Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Paul McCartney amongst others. He co‐wrote, played, sang and co‐produced both Travelling Wilburys albums. Not a bad resumé by anybody's standards.

Everyone should see ELO at least once. They have their live show down to an art form and I'd even go as far as to say they sound better live than on the albums. Jeff Lynn is still killing even though he's in his 70s and he is smart enough to have all that amazing talent backing him to pick up the where he needs them to now that he's older. I've seen older musicians that try to do everything they used and it suffers as a result, but ELO has it worked out perfectly.

The name is Electric Light Orchestra. Orchestration was what They are about. Excellent sound.

This was written in the 70's and there were strings players in the band You need to listen to Mr Blue Sky, Rock Aria. Telephone Line from this show gives you shivers Just a brilliant band That's the original line up you described, Richard Tandy is the keyboard player in the show as well. He's been around a long time!

ELO was conceived as a rock band with strings. From their second album until the early ‘80s the band consisted of the usual guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, plus two cello players and a violin player. Roy Wood was only on the first album, and when Jeff reformed the band in the ‘90s he only retained Richard Tandy on keyboards. Bev Bevan and several former members also recorded and toured as ELO Part II during the hiatus and eventually just The Orchestra. Jeff wrote the vast majority of their music and is also a well known producer. During the Wilburys era he produced George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, and he also produced the two new Beatles Tracks for Beatles Anthology. He is a huge Beatles fan and his writing and production style showcase that. Early ELO was more “progressive” but is best known for a huge number of hits. One of which is the song Xanadu, originally performed by ELO but with Olivia Newton John singing since it was for a movie in which she starred.

I saw them live in Hull, same tour as this only 3 dates in 2017 if I'm correct.Twilight was absolutely amazing both visually and musically on a warm summers evening...Rockaria is one you should check out from this tour too...Jeff is an absolute legend and he had the best of the best supporting him on this tour.Audience went mad when Mr blue sky started...As with Abba...if you don't like ELO the problem lays with you.....regardless of what genre you like great tunes are great tunes..end of.

Jeff had the bright idea of doing a cover of Chuck Berry's Roll Over Beethoven but he opened the song with a bit of Beethoven's fifth symphony thus getting a synthesis of both classical music with rock music which is really what Electric Light Orchestra is all about. Plus it is one of the few E.L.O. songs that Jeff did not write himself. Back in the 70s they had Mick Kaminski on Violin and Hugh McDowell on cello. 😊

Yes, as others have mentioned ELO used strings on a lot of their music from the beginning of the group.
