This show may very well be the evidence we need to prove that Andrew Lloyd Webber is secretly the author behind My Immortal. With a storyline so convoluted and character assassination across the board, who else could come up with something so cringe yet so beautiful. Btw, thank you for the shout-out. I feel so honored that you like my work and were willing to promote it!

I'm JUST sayin, I'd watch a play where the Phantom and Rauul co-parent the child in an odd couple style two and a half men sort of situation. The Phantom is the neat one, Rauul is the slob, but they make it work for their boy.

On top of "The Phantom's whole learning arc from the first film is gone," another reason the Phantom feels so much more... unsympathetic? in this one compared to the original where he was still a Murder Man is... you knew in the first one that he's been shaped by a crucible of life and in this one, he's on the top of the world. He has wealth, he has privilege, he's not the "underdog" and yet they expect us to gush about him even MORE than the original. It's just... I hate it.

In the West End version that I saw, Gustav had a line about how much he enjoyed the way musical notes die while you watch. He was a much more disturbed/disturbing character which made "Beauty Underneath" work much better! Also in "Devil Take the Hindmost" Phantom wore a wig but no mask and that worked symbolically as both he and Raoul had their "masks" off! I find the original cast album a lot better - this production feels very toned down to me and loses a lot of its spark. It should be full-on Tim Burton crazy like the live-action Dumbo! But yeah in "Beneath a Moonless Sky" we learn that Christine, shortly before her marriage, came and found Phantom where he was hiding and they spent a wonderful night together when it was so dark she could not see his, giving him confidence. She woke up planning to tell him she loved him and would stay with him but, afraid of how she might react to seeing him in the daylight and wanting the memory of that night to remain perfect, he had already left and she never saw him again.

Love Never Dies truly is the Phantom/Raoul "fix it" fic I never expected to see come to life onscreen, but here we are. These character assassinations are wild and I'm still reeling from it after all these years. Considering it was loosely based on a satire novel (The Phantom of Manhattan) that decidedly wanted to tell its own story with the characters, I seriously have to wonder if they just REALLY needed to find a feasible way to get Phantom’s DNA into the mix. o.o I will never be over the fact that this kid immediately thinks the people in glass cages are beautiful, but Phantom's bubble-sunburn-scar face is apparently the most hideous thing he has ever seen with his 10-year-old eyes. No wonder Phantom's hair went thin and gray and fell out of his head! Poor dude can only take so much rejection, it seems. That child aged him by AT LEAST 50 years all in the span of a few minutes. Ben Lewis' Phantom cracks me up, especially that part at the end where he has no idea what to do with his hands, so he just removes himself from the scene, hands Raoul back his dead wife like “okay, here’s your family back, sorry I got involved”, and then cries at the ocean for a while. It's so corny I stopped trying to make sense of it. XD So, the major question I'm left with is this: Where is the sequel to THIS story, Andrew Lloyd Webber? Where is my sequel where Raoul and Phantom have to share the domestic responsibilities of raising their son together a la Two and a Half Men? Give me the sequel where these two awful men have to reform themselves and each other for the sake of their child and a healthier lifestyle! You butchered them, so now you have to fix them! Think of the children!

I read a fan theory that the Phantom died after the musical, and Love Never Dies is his dying dream, and with this in mind, it does explain a lot of weirdness. Like Raoul, Madame Giry, and Meg all taking a 180 regarding their character, and Christine losing all semblance of a backbone that she had in Phantom. This would also explain how Gustave can exist despite the factors leading up to his birth being completely and utterly illogical.

@@mysterykiddo2167 It does make sense since in Love Never Dies, Phantom gets everything he ever wanted. Fame, love, respect, Christine, and a chance at a family of his own, but this forgets that he’s still a wanted fugitive responsible for extortion and murder so it’s unlikely he’d be able to get these things with such a high profile case even with Meg selling herself which is why everything falls apart in the end shown by Christine dying. Perfect dream or not, it’s not real which Erik knows deep down and that’s why ends up dead because the real Christine didn’t love him in the end. On the topic of Christine, this theory would explain why she’s so ‘doll-like’ in this musical with her porcelain white skin, perfect hair, and the drastic changes to her personality. In the last musical, while she was very much an ingenue, she still felt human who could be scared, happy, and even sensual when she wants to be but in this one not really who could get mess. Here though, not really. She seems more like what Erik thinks of Christine. His perfect angelic muse here to save him from his loneliness which would make sense if this play was from Erik’s view as he died.

I quite enjoy the score to this show! A shame the story it is based on reads like it was concocted by a 12 year old phangirl with zero writing skill or actual human relationship experience. Oh, and of course I've seen it live! Both in London and on tour in the US. I love theatrical train wrecks. In London, the show started with the Phantom crooning over a life-sized Christine s*x doll...err, automaton (think the "Christine mirror bride" from the original but walking/moving). SO creepy. Glad they changed it to a massive portrait, even though it's only marginally lower on the creep scale.

I did feel sorry for Erik in the Phantom, but when Love Never Dies came out & watching some video reviews, he made me dislike him. He spent the last decade pinning over Christine, "Nobody can sing my songs but my beloved Christine" he treats Madame Giry, her daughter Meg & everyone who works for him like dirt. He threatens Christine with blackmail & harming of her child if she doesn't sing for him. He makes a bet with Raoul to win Christine & she never learns what they did, then drives Meg into insanity that led to Christine's death. Which off stage led Meg to kill herself then sometime later Raoul drinks himself to death over things he's done. Now he's stuck with a kid he has no idea how to take care of Erik has a lot of blood on his hands. I feel bad for Meg who was driven crazy because no matter what she does Erik won't recognize her, she sold her body to help Erik get the money to finance his show & build up his wealth. Then she threatens her bf's kid, then accidentally kills her bf. Which drives Meg to of herself, Madame Giry for losing her daughter but mostly for Gustav. He his fake dad doesn't really love him, he recently learns who his real dad is, he gets kidnapped the witnesses his mother getting shot, later he'll learn his real was obsessed with his mom. This kid is going to need some serious therapy after this Gustav isn't going to grow up happy.

This was a damn crime, it's not possible for ANY CHARACTER TO HAVE THEIR ORIGINAL PERSONALITY!!!! Cristine was somewhat manipulable and docile, But to a certain extent she was somewhat strong in personality (she showed it at the end When I confront the Phantom), Raul He was someone who did crazy things for love, he loved Cristine, he made it very clear, Meg was an excellent friend, she supported Cristine, she is literally the best friend, Madame Giry is a mother figure and it shows, she supports Cristine, the Phantom, a man with many conflicts, A lot of suffering saved, who only wants to love and be loved, but a maniac at the end, and in this work...All this is going to hell, Cristine has no personality, sometimes she is maternal and that's it, Raúl, what an ugly person, Now he's a cretin and an alcoholic, Meg Now she hates Cristine for... I don't know exactly, the thing is that now she is a prostitute and tries to kill Cristine and Raúl's son, Now Madame Giry as apparently a bad mother, And the Phantom is the best, although his manic depressive personality in need of love is very flat, he does not cause pity, he makes others feel sorry, and we go from a sophisticated opera to a freak show... It is awful! Everything that the Phantom, Cristine, Raúl, the entire opera learned in the original work disappeared out of nowhere! The work is beautiful, creating a sequel is destroying everything, I don't know how but this is the only work that made me more than satisfied with the ending, because it makes clear what ended up happening, to It is understood that everyone ended up continuing with their lives. It concludes in a spectacular way! I don't know how to express myself

It might sound weird, but I felt way more sexual tension between Raoul and Erik ( the phantom ) than any of them had with Christine ,they should have ended up together ... What pisses me off is that Christine NEVER learns of the bet between Raoul and Erik, she doesn't have any agency ... They could have made the play be about them reuniting and trying to deal with their feelings for one another while being fully aware that they are nothing more than friends ( cut Gustave and the Gerries out ) ,or what If Carlota went mad and tried to kill both the Phantom and Christine for ( in her mind ) ruining her courier ... This COULD have worked with a better script, but once again it's an ALW self insert but unlike the first one ( which as overrated as it is It works ) this doesn't work

Something about thos particular production of Love Never Dies that I really don't love is the portrayal of the phantom. Personally, I feel he comes across as a bit of a soap opera villain, which is weirdly juxtaposed by how straight and realistic everyone else seems to be. I dont want to through hate at the actor, I just feel it's an odd choice

I honestly liked the film adaptation contrary to a lot of POTO fans. A lot of people hated Gerard Butler's singing voice, but he does a good job for someone who is not a trained singer IMO. His acting is beautiful and he really does an amazing job of portraying the Phantom's personality. It might actually be my favorite portrayal of the Phantom (not just ALW) in terms of sheer acting ( I also loved Claude Rains). He was only 33 when he played this character too, which makes it more impressive to me. It's a dark character to have to figure out at such a young age. He just really nails the nuances of this character's pain, sorrow, and anger. A lot of POTO fans will try to say that he was only cast for being "sexy" and that the Phantom shouldn't be "sexy." Honestly....there is now that you can tell me Crawford was not intended to be seductive. All of the stage Phantoms by ALW are portrayed this way. It just seems like a trivial thing to complain about. Then of course the disfigurement, which people felt was downplayed. I can see their point, but I also think prosthetics have a tendency to look fake. I felt like they did the best they could to create a disfigurement that looked realistic. I could see this Phantom being burned in a fire or by a chemical burn. *I think Gerard's singing is an acquired taste and I get why theater fans don't like it. He does not have a broadway voice, it's more of a classical/folk singer kind of a voice. I enjoyed the emotions he put into his singing. There are times where he shouts and gurgles some of the lines, but it kind of works considering his personality. I expect Patrick Wilson to have a perfect heroic tenor voice, but am oddly ok with the Phantom having an imperfect singing voice. I've heard a lot of people trash the film, but I thought it was well put together. The art direction, props, cinematography, camera-work all came across as well done. I think it really comes down to personal taste and what kind of chemistry you're looking for in terms of the acting ensemble. Some POTO fans wanted Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman exclusively, which IMO is unrealistic (She was 44 at the time...we can't have a 44 year old playing a 16 year. it makes no sense.) Some POTO fans have a hard time accepting that stage adaptations are going to be different and cast movie actors. Anyway, my two cents as someone who saw the film in 2004 and who has consistently rewatched it over the last 20 years. I keep looking for the horrendous flaws that people keep insisting are there, but I just don't see them. I also don't see Gerard as a "bad" singer or "bad" Phantom.

That's valid, my mom also loves the movie and I totally get it. I disagree but don't ever think that I want to make anyone feel bad for disagreeing with me. That's the best part of art, you know?

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Honestly, I don't feel bad if people dislike the film. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. There are some fans that will act like you're stupid or have bad taste if you say you like them film. Those are the only fans that I have issues with because they're just out there insulting people. For a lot of POTO fans that was their introduction to Phantom of the Opera. I think you can say you hate the film, but not insult people while doing so.
