I recently saw an interview that Paul McCartney did in the Howard Stern Show about this very song. Howard said, "I heard John didn't like this song." Paul responded, "Who says? A Jamaican man (I forget his name) was a friend of ours. I saw him one day and asked how he was doing. He replied, 'Ob-la-di, Ob-la da, life goes on you know!' So, George, Ringo and I were in the studio working on this song when John walked in. He asked what we were working on and I told him. John sat down at the piano and started playing what you hear. We had our song finally!" By the way, I absolutely love this song.

In his book, Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, he says very little about why he wrote Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Di, but he explained that he liked to "go down a club" after a Beatles concert and get food and drink. Inside the club he met a Nigerian conga player called Jimmy Scott. Paul asked Jimmy how he was, and Jimmy replied, "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, life goes on, Bra." Jimmy explained that it was a phrase similar to the French saying “comme ci, comme ça.” used, especially in answer to the question, “How's it going?” to convey that something is neither very good nor very bad; but just so-so...but life goes on. Paul wrote the song when the Beatles were in India, and he was breaking up with Jane Asher and starting a relationship with Linda Eastman. When the Beatles became famous, Paul didn't want to get married; he saw how things were going with John and his wife, Cynthia, and wanted no part of it. However, he started feeling differently about marriage after he met Linda. Perhaps he wrote the lyrics foreseeing or forecasting his future life as a married man and a father. Listen to the refrain in the chorus of the song! He even predicts that the woman he marries will stay at home and do her pretty face and in the evening, she still sings it with the band. When Paul created the group WINGS, Linda, indeed, became his wife, bore him children, and sang with the band.

However, the primary reasons they stopped touring was because of several issues, a) they couldn't hear themselves due to the technology of the sound system of that era was subpar, b) the fact that the audience was excessively loud contributed greatly to their audio problems, and c) the logistics of dealing with the mulitudes of half crazed fans was becoming harder to control. True story: Paul, George and Ringo were in the studio working on this song and just couldn't come up with a way to start it. They'd been working on it for days but were still stuck. John, late as usual, strolls into the studio and notices they're still working on it and says hey, how about this? Then bangs out the piano intro in A. The boys just fell in after him and completed the song. Teamwork!

Not correct. McCartney was in the club where Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor was playing. Jimmy was singing a song and the crowd replied "Ob-la-di, ob-la-da" McCartney stole the lyrics, claimed it as his own. Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor was in the process of suing McCartney over the stolen song and fell on bad times and was looking at a lengthy stay in jail. McCartney bailed him out on the condition he dropped the law suit.

Paul and the rest of the Beatles made the song. At any rate, my initial post still stands. I was NOT talking about the song, the lyrics, the title or anything else that you have mentioned. My post was strictly about John making up the intro.

Great Beatles tune..one of my favorites that I don't hear mentioned much is Rocky Raccoon (from the White Album), as well as Happiness is a Warm Gun, although with the situation in the country right now, it takes on a different meaning but for back in the day, it was more innocent so if you listen to it, try to keep that in mind. Love the channel.. you two kids are great (I feel I can call you kids because my own children may be older than you two - about to turn 38).. take care everyone!

Isolated, this song just sounds like a fun, goofy little love story. But there’s something about hearing their songs in the context of an album. How the tracks are picked; their order; the contrast of styles from track to track. It’s magical! I know you’d have a problem reacting to an entire album, but if possible, please find a way. At sometime you should react to “Michelle”. It’s McCartney at his best.

I've never told anyone they're too young to know or like a band. I'm 47 and whenever I saw young adults with classic rock band t-shirts, I'd ask them what their favorite song was. If they knew the band, I'd commend them for keeping the music alive. If I found out they never listened to the band, I'd get psyched and say "Oh, you have to! You're in for such a great musical experience!" I'd tell them a few songs to start with, and hopefully they did and got to experience the wide-eyed wonder and musical magic that you two have!
