That's so true. I was a barely a year old when The Beatles split. By the age of 9 I knew all the words to 'the hits'. That said, I had this notion, well into my mid-teens, that Paul was the bright-eyed, measured and 'merely melodic' (ouch!) conservative. I grew up.

Paul McCartney still has that boyish charm after all these years. He’s just completed another tour of Australia, and at 81 years old he still absolutely wowed his record attending crowds with his non stop 49 hit songs ( his and the Beatles ) over 3 hours. His energy and shear talent and tenacity speaks for itself. A true legend.

Paul lived a few blocks away from Abbey Road studio at the time, and while recording this song he got into the habit of getting to the studio early each morning an hour before the other Beatles arrived, then tried this song only once. Not happy, he would drop it and try again the next morning and this went on for several days until he was happy with the vocals. He would only try once so as not to break his voice, for obvious reasons if you listen to the song. He said “5 years ago I could have done this in a flash”. Great performance. Thanks for reacting.

Fast forward to today, and my "favorite" Beatles song is *probably*......."Ballad of John and Yoko"! It's too involved to explain it in the KZread comments section, but it's true, in total honesty.

If you haven't heard Helter Skelter from the White Album you won't believe it. Paul screams and the guitar work is crazy in this proto-punk/metal song that nobody could believe was The Beatles. Sir George Martin, the Beatles producer and the true 'fifth' Beatle, made Paul sing the song over and over till his voice was strained and raspy. This is not what a producer or audio engineer would do ordinarily. Their job is to record and capture the music as technically perfect as possible, but it's just another example of how this time of experimentation in music gave us so much beauty and changed culture around the world. Thank you for doing this! You guys are the best.

According to Geoff Emeric's book Recording the Beatle's, Paul would come to the studio early and practice the vocals of Oh Darling. He would sing it one time and say it was not there yet. After a few weeks he recorded it and nailed it. Lennon said later that it was one of the songs he would have loved to sing.

One of the best Beatles songs ever. Paul just rips it, and the backing harmonies of John and George are superb. Then you throw in Ringo’s drumming, Paul’s bass, and George’s raw guitar, you have the formula for a great Beatles tune. Nice reaction. I became a studio drummer because of Ringo. People who aren't musically inclined like to say that he got lucky being in The Beatles. Yeah? Listen to that snare work at 2:28, when he does 32nd beats on that snare, which is hard enough! But pay attention to how he's accenting certain beats to the point where he swings those 32nd beats. Think he got lucky? Think he couldn't do that again? Listen at 5:20. He does it again. And this is just one example. Ringo was a monster drummer back in the day.

Believe it or not, John played the main distorted guitar on his Epiphone Casino electric guitar and George Harrison was on bass instead of Paul. McCartney also played the piano on this 6/4 masterpiece. Paul didn't accept the first bunch of vocal takes over a period of about two weeks, they say, because he needed to rough up his voice so he could sing it more aggressively soulful. Now that's a mark of true dedication. You 'guys' are right about your impression of this song which is just one of my many favorite Beatles songs!
