The Beatles were their own genre of music.

Paul McCartney chose the character's name Desmond, because reggae singer Desmond Dekker had recently toured the UK. Paul knew Nigerian conga player Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor, as part of Jimmy's stage act he would shout out, "Ob-la-di!"..., and the audience would respond with "...Ob-la-da!", then he would reply with "...Life goes on!" Scott unsuccessfully tried to claim a writer's credit for the expression. Later Jimmy was awaiting trial for not paying maintenance to his ex-wife, and he asked the Beatles to pay his legal bills. McCartney agreed as long as Scott stopped his claim on the song.

Even though I do not know the meaning of most of the words, it is an interesting song, more like a dance song.

This song makes me happy. Not a bad thing for a song to do.

Great film,danny boyle is a British film genius and i dont mind admitting,it brought a tear to my eye as each song struck a massive chord remembering my young life in London in the 60's. Beatles,greatest band in history,by some distance.

What a fun song!! At the time the use of the word "bra" in the chorus was "shocking". I remember other artists covering this song and changing the word to "La". The twist at the end of Desmond doing his pretty face and being a singer in the band raised some eyebrows as well. Carry On!!

Well, reportedly John and George didn't have a lot of fun recording this song, though you couldn't tell by the results with all of the peripheral banter and sound effects. In fact, that slamming piano intro was as a result of John walking in late, rushing to the piano and loudly announcing something along the lines of 'Okay! Obladi Oblada take 327!' whereupon he angrily bashed the piano. I guess Paul liked it so much, it was kept. Unfortunately, the sessions for this song apparently produced some very heated arguments to the point that famed engineer and producer Geoff Emerick quit working with the Beatles. The title came from Paul hearing it said by a Londan-based Nigerian musician, Jimmy Scott who originally came up with it. He tried to get writing credit but was not successful.
