London Taxis and Lots of Spiffing Stuff About Them
London Taxis have been carrying Londoners around for over 300 years. In this video Joolz travels around London in Taxis talking to lots of drivers and finding out all about them.
The history of the taxi, what are the rules and regulations? Who owns one? How do you become a taxi driver? How long does it take to do the knowledge?
Of course there is the usual foolishness and funny anecdotes too.

About 40 years ago, after returning from Belgium on our first foreign holiday, I loaded the wife and kids into a taxi at Victoria. The boat train had arrived late. In the tense moment I said to the driver, Paddington please. I said Paddington because it was my old route home. Half way there I realised we needed to get to Kings Cross. I embarrassingly explained this to the driver. He didn't bat an eyelid. Just readjusted his route and got us there with seconds to spare. London Cabbies have always been high in my estimation.

@@paulinehucknall985 That's wonderful. But London doesn't have open air drug markets and an average of 350 murders per year like Baltimore does. Or I should say London doesn't have that yet. And it has nothing to do with being "intimidated", it has to do with survival. There's two instances that having a legally owned firearm in my cab saved my life and I went home to my family that morning instead of a body bag.
In my small seaport town in the States, cabbies were famous for delivering bottles of alcohol to the docks for the merchant mariners who didn’t want to or couldn’t leave their ships. I had a friend who drove a cab for years and had some great stories. He also got hired to drive rental affection ladies to and from the docks. Good times, good times!

No mention of the fantastic 1979 film “the knowledge” featuring Nigel Hawthorne. Well worth a watch. As usual great film Joolz!
When I saw the title of this video I was so hoping Mark would be back! Yay!!! Whenever I am in london, a black cab is my treat to myself at the end of a long day wondering the streets. They are an attraction in and of themselves. Every time I have the best chats with the drivers. And honestly, they aren't "that" expensive so long as you aren't going too far..... That said, the last time we were in London we got taken on an impromptu pub crawl. We met a couple of people in a pub who were in London on business and clearly had lots of cash. Long story short, we were treated to a lot of booze at a lot of bars all over London. At the end of the night they said they were heading back to their hotel at Euston. I said, "HEY! That's the area we are staying in, let's share a cab"..... We pull up to Euston station and I realize my mistake......I got confused by the "E"'s. We were staying in Ealing. Now THAT was an expensive cab ride. But really, for the memories, it was worth it.
Thanks Joolz, l'm a London cabbie and we're on the floor like a lot of businesses, so fingers crossed 🤞🍀❤️

My father used to drive a black cab but he wasn't a cab driver. He was a police officer and they used the cabs to do surveillance following suspected criminals. After all nobody would suspect a black cab being driven by a police officer in London

Sneaky! I have heard of similar tricks, like putting small, cuddly kids toys on the back window shelf to make a car look like a regular suburban family car.
Another Great Watch.... I have heard the best taxi drivers are in London and the worst in Los Angeles and New York City as they take the long way for more $$$. Don't lose the cabman shelters and the taxis as there a large part of London's heritage like the cable cars are too San Francisco. Did you say "18 sugars please?" How great it is that you can make learning something new so fun. Someday I'll make it to the UK. Thanks Joolz for your time and hard "but it looks fun" work you put into your videos.....
Having lived in W1 for many years and had the ordeal of reading through routes of the blue book with both my dad and my brother who both became Black Cabbies, I can honestly say this vid was excellent fun. The 'haven't you got anything smaller joke' was so funny I cried. Thanks for a great vid Jooles, I may book your tour for fun when I finally return.

I always use black cabs in London, there's no reason not to! The first time I was there, I was standing on a corner with a map, trying to find my way, when a cab stopped just to help me. I didn't need a ride, and he was still happy to help. Where I come from, a cab would sooner run over your foot than stop to help for nothing. London cabbies are the best.

Great fun, Joolz! When I was at LAMDA in the old days before it relocated to its shiny new digs, we used to go up the road to The Hansom Cab pub after classes. There's a police station nearby, so the place was always half-and-half drama students and coppers. Too bad you couldn't go inside.
