1:56 is an absolute sight to behold - what a splendid example of queuing.

Lived in Muswell Hill in 1970 and loved it. I worked at the Silverdale Hotel ( long gone ) and later at Greygates Nursery which was a family operated business and may very well still be going strong. Wonderful memories of those times.

A friend of mine lived just down the road from the cottage where Peter Sellars lived.He was glad to see him move, as he had an annoying habit of playing what my friend thought was a trumpet,, at around 5am every morning.He would usually play it outside,in his garden as loud as he could ! At work some mornings,my friend often looked tired,as a result of being woken at 5am, and not being able to get back to sleep. Someone at work said they were a fan of his films and the Goons,and my friend suggested they try living next door to him !

The railway to Ally Pally was not "intended". . It was very much in operation for many years - taking hundreds of thousands of people to the Palace for exhibitions.

Watching these vids from an council estate has made me want to travel all these places now in the summer time since i barely leave my own postcode

Oh Joolz, Muswell Hill is SO much more interesting than you let on. Too much time spent round Cranley Gardens. But why the Woodsman ffs (that's Archway). Deep, deep interesting history here, including Roman. The Moss Well wasn't at the roundabout, but the roundabout did used to be a spring-fed pond (until 1849). There was a convent built to service pilgrims to the Moss Well (now in a back garden). The Green Man pub & Inn was established in the 1500s (now grievously remodeled as flats). There's a couple of 18th century buildings near it too. In the 1700s there were 7 or 8 great country estates on the crown of Muswell Hill (part of the stables of two of them now a private homes), the most interesting of which belonged to Topham and Diana Beauclerk (Samuel Johnson's friends). It had an observatory & a 30K volume library. Stones from The Elms, another of the country houses are embedded in the walls that line the front gardens of Queens Avenue which cuts through the former estate. Muswell Hill got much bomb damage, one whole street was rebuilt post-war & there's many other smaller bomb sites, now infilled. St James church got hit with a couple of incendairies, so the interior is 'new'. The present building replaced an earlier church on the site & there's a VR post box near the entrance placed there at the time of the old church. Would have liked to here more about The Old Village down the bottom of St James lane and our beloved Antheneum, sacrificed for the 'new' Sainsbury's in the 1960s. And W. Martyn's coffee sellers surely rates a mention, yes? It's been in the same unchanged premises since 1897. When you're ready to come round to do an update, call me first :-)

@@tovangar Hello. I have Jack Whitehead's book. AFAIK only a few houses were destroyed, my girlfriend lived in a Collins house built around 1910. More damage on Midhurst Avenue, I think.

I was there a month ago and took a picture of 23 Cranley Gardens and the owner came downstairs and glared at me. I said her property should have a blue plaque anyway! Amazing how close it is to the rich and famous residents of Highgate

I lived on Dukes Avenue right where Jools is walking at (11:03). I think the Frog Pool in Queen's Wood was a paddling pool in the fifties. As a very young kid, I fell into it (all six inches of it) and was very upset and have been terrified of water ever since, and still can't swim.😁😁

Born & raised in Muswell Hill, parklands walk is definitely the pot spot 😂 & I have stood in that bus q for the last 4 years. learnt so much from this video! Thanks Joolz. Also, my uncle worked on the house next door to Dennis and would always find random pieces of bone/skin and had to report it.

Thanks for a wonderful trip down Memory Lane, Joolz! I grew up on Fortis Green in the 50s and loved watching your delightful travel guide. Went to Saturday morning pictures at The Odeon, Muswell Hill every Saturday and it was always mayhem with kids fighting, screaming and throwing stuff, the lady in the uniform with her torch was powerless to stop it. 6d. to get in and 4d. for a choc ice if I had the extra cash. Took the 102 for 1d. if it was raining.

I come back to this video again and again. Though I’ve spent most of my life in Canada, I started out life in this part of the world (North London) and started returning to visit this area only a few years ago. Your videos are terrific for the information you share and for making me feel nostalgic for a place I barely know but was where my parents started our family. Thank you Joolz!

I took my 9 year old brother to see Muddy Waters at Ally Pally, summer 1979, so he would remember that for the rest of his life.

I love watching these videos and have been a subscriber for a year or so now. Was watching the this one when I noticed that the two Virginia plates on the wall at the Clissold Arms at 13:14 belonged to my cousin Bruce MacQueen who was "The" Kinks fan. Unfortunately he past 2 years ago but it's nice to know that there is still a piece of him in the shrine to his favourite band in his favourite city. Thanks Joolz, you made my day and brought a tear my eye and a lump to my throat.

In the late 60’s Rod Stewart used to grab a pint in the Woodman before catching the tube into central London to play with Long John Baldry.

Being from the Ilford area I dont know N London very well. I have heard Muswell Hill Crouch End and the Alexandra Palace areas are lovely and your great video shows this. Great part of N London I must visit sometime! Thank you for the lovely video

I binged these before I went to London and it made it so much cooler to recognize all these places.

The Highgate tunnels and that old disused railway station are remarkable, Joolz. I never realised that there was a railway line in that location. Being in Muswell Hill must be great! To think that the great English rock group The Kinks hail from there - marvellous, they were really big favourites of mine. Packed full of information, this is a fantastic video, and so, many thanks.

Ohh my old home and best place in the world, Muswell Hill, where I lived for 18 years. I know all the places you visited. My first daughter was born there and we used to take her to Highgate Wood.

Oh, don’t forget the groundskeepers cottage in Highgate Wood. The groundskeeper looks after Highgate Wood and Hampstead Heath. Can you imagine living in a forest, in London?!

Very Nostalgic for me Julian. After living in the Nurses' Home at St Clement's Hospital, Mile End, for about 9 months, I moved to a flat in Muswell Hill whose garden backed onto Alexandra Park. I thought I'd feel safer there, & I did. But many years later I realised that Dennis Neilson was living there while I lived there. Isn't life an Illusion!!!

Joolz brillant as usual walk with lots of interesting information.

You could have mentioned Alexandra Park racecourse (1868-1970). Known as the quirkiest course in the UK it could stage races of only three different distances, the camber was terrible, the turns were ridiculously tight and spectator viewing was severely impaired. It’s amazing it lasted more than a century. The jockey Willie Carson said it needed bombing. The exotic black, plumed tipster, Prince Monolulu, used to visit. I saw him looking miserable on the 41 bus one evening after a presumably unsuccessful meeting. The first race on the day it closed, 8 September, was won by a horse called Dawn Reign at 10-1. I had a tenner on it.

I just stumbled upon this video and I cannot thank you enough for covering this area. My grandfather was born in Muswell Hill and it has always been my dream to at least visit this area and see where he was born and lived until he emigrated to America (I dream of moving to London). I still hope that someday I will be able to vist but until then this made me feel as though I visited a small part of his home.

I was watching a rare DVD of Leonard Whiting and Jean Simmons in “Say Hello to Yesterday”-great London locations-and it got me thinking of other Swinging London films from the 60s and early 70s. “Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment.” “Alfie.” “A Hard Day’s Night.” Of course there are more. How much of that London remains? What’s been gentrified? What’s been razed to allow space for high rise flats? Cities are never static.

I nearly spit my tea out laughing at this intro. 🤣 I was not prepared for that!

It's a beautiful place❣️

As was I, in February 1960! My mother’s claim to fame, she says, was being told off for hula hooping on the ward the day after giving birth to me. The site of the maternity home now caters to the other end of life with a block of flats for the elderly, I believe. Always been proud to call myself a Muswell Hillbilly. A very interesting tour of the area by Joolz, great stuff. The ‘facts’ about the defunct railway line from Finsbury Park up to Ally Pally that now forms the Parkland Walk are seriously awry, but I can forgive him that!

I went to School in Muswell Hill so lovely to watch

Yeah this area has some really cool public parks we stayed in Nth Finchley few years back, took the bus down to Highgate Wood or Muswell Hill a fair bit I was at the whim of a 4 year old so it was all about the playgrounds and flying foxes etc but we trod lots of this ground. Anyway nice vid Joolz, thanks.

Interesting seeing the boating lake at Alexandra Palace I remember my mum telling me there use to be a miniature railway running around it,which I remember, and she told me that she took my elder brother on it and he asked her if he could stay on it and go round again and she said no ,which was rather fortunate as the next time round the Train crashed causing fatalities .

Loved this. I went to school in Hornsey and once a month we did cross country around Ally Pally.

An abandoned station that nature has claimed how cool 👍👍

I've lived in the Ally Pally area for 30yrs.

Very good, but you missed so much stuff! I grew up in Muswell Hill, and rode on the push-pull ltrains as a kid, so I must correct you on one thing. You say the branch from Highgate to Ally pally was planned but never happened. Actually it opened in 1873. It came and went with the fortunes of Ally Pally itself. Much work was done in preparation for the ill-fated electrification program, which made it very interesting, with wrong-height platforms, lineside cabling with no purpose, even some 4-rail track in places, and empty sub-stations.

It's amazing how similar this is to crystal palace. It had the palace, the transmitters and just round the corner there's a converted old section of railway with a tunnel with bats!!

One would imagine many of these places would be absolutely terrifying at night. One also cringes at the mention of “killer views”! Still, well done you. Having a tasty lunch and subsequent walk with you is on my bucket list.

I love these video and your narration! Very funny and great fun! I went to Ali pali for a bmx and motorbike show. John Craven was there and I discovered he is one of the rudest, meanest children's TV presenter!!

Yes but did you know that Fairport convention took their name from the building called Fairport where they used to rehearse, opposite the old firemans cottages on Fortis Green rd. Also... the Davis brother used to attend what's now know as Fortismere School (my old school). Beautiful vid, loved the Pitcairn island one too

Thank you for the guided tour. Thought you might have included the very individual & independent shops like the cheese shop or coffee shop with the original interiors/ exterior. Always liked the architecture here & the views across London. 🇬🇧 The video was somewhat marred for me by the vulgar jokes about mums.😢 Btw, there are several cinemas/ theatres that have been converted to churches & are thriving communities. The Rainbow Theatre ( beautifully restored foyer with fountain & interiors) is one of them & The old cinemas in Kilburn & Islington ( both gorgeous art deco architechture ) perhaps you would like to visit? They are stunning!❤❤❤ All the best wishes Joolz.

Just finished a book about Dennis Nilsen. He was very lonely and hated to see his guests leave so he often killed them. Sometimes he would have them sitting up in a chair. He was very fond of his dog Bleep. Loads of people were invited back to his flats and most left unharmed.

You missed out that Alexandra palace was a WW1 internment camp for Germans in the UK.

I know a couple who lived at that Peter Sellers house. They moved after the house got too small for them after they had 2 children.

Joolz fancy not not knowing, " Who know where the times goes " by Fairweather Convention one of the great tracks of all time, my old hunting ground Crouch End and Mussey

After seeing your jack the ripper tour and seeing u mention the Nielsen house I would love to see you do maybe a "haunted location walk" video. Popular supposedly haunted locations etc
