Deptford London Walking Tour - Salty Saucey Sailor's History Romp
Deptford has now become one of my favourite London walking tours! It was established as a royal naval dockyard by King Henry VIII and has seen innumerable voyages of discovery set sail over the last 350 years.
Walk the streets with Joolz where sailors trod. Walk in the footsteps of Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth I!
See where the Jolly Roger pirate flag was born and where the ancient mariner is buried alongside Christopher Marlowe.
Samuel Pepys being unfaithful to his wife and the Czar of Russia, Peter the Great, being wheeled around a huge garden in a wheelbarrow!
There's also Dire Straits and Ha'penny Hatch, a beautiful piece of Victorian engineering.
Oh, and don't forget the usual helping of Mutiny on the Bounty and Mydiddee one of the first Tahitians to visit England.
See the old victualling yard and the naval officers' quarters.
Deptford is a terrific place for a walking tour with a salty sailor's theme!

That is one of my favourite pubs in London, it's called The Dog and Bell. Before covid every Wednesday evening a bunch of people would band together to play Irish traditional music just for fun, needless to say the atmosphere was greatly improved by them. I recommend this Pub to everyone, especially if you like continental craft beers as you wouldn't be able to try them all before falling into a coma and dying as the selection is quite extensive. Thanks for the great video

I lived in Deptford from 1951 until 1972 when I emigrated to Australia. I am nearly 81 years old now. I was 30 years old when I left. When I was 12 years old my sister and I walked around St Nicholas Church which was a ruin in those days. We found a hole in the wall in a recess and crawled into the crypt underneath the church. There, we found many coffins with some exposing the embalmed bodies contained therein. When we emerged, we found a person standing outside that was the curator, and we were promptly marched down to his office. Once we convinced him we weren't there to steal the copper from the roof, he let us go! I worked at Convoys wharf as a shipping clerk in the early sixties whilst living in Berthon Street, Deptford. St Paul's Church was a two-minute walk away. I went to Saint Joseph's Catholic School across the road from the railway station from the age of eleven until I was fifteen. Writing this, l am now living in Brisbane, Australia which is a far cry from the Deptford I knew. I have been back in 2008 to visit Deptford which has changed out of sight from the place I knew back then. Still, I enjoyed watching this video because it invoked many old memories.
You and Simon should do BBC host-offs more often. Very fun episode!

I've lived here for 11 years and you've shown me places I haven't seen before.

Finally a new Video!!! Hurray my Sunday is saved! Three most famous food market in Munich Germany is called Viktualienmarkt.
My Dad loved this. He was born in Deptford and was a child there during the war. It brought back so many happy memories for him. A big thank you from him and myself.

Beer at the end looked AWESOME!!!!🍺🍻🍺🍻🍺🍻
Thoroughly entertaining whilst educational, too. Well done, kind sir.
Ah, I needed this! I've missed your videos! Thank you for the quick vacation sir! Perfect timing!
Sad to see how our history has been trashed in places like Deptford , all the old pubs have gone and much of the old Georgian town houses .

Yes. Sometimes after work I used to go to the Duke in Deptford, on the corner of Gonson Street. It’s still there, but totally different from how I remember it. For a brief period, it was renamed ‘nail in the heart’ after that Jools Holland song. Same with other parts of Deptford.
Astounding high quality tour. Thank you. Even the BBC could not better it.
In 1973 l bought an Art Deco electric fire shaped like a yacht with steel two foot sails to deflect the heat from Deptford market. It worked very well all the time and l sold it in 2002 for £100. So l have a fold memory of Deptford.
Cor...it’s all changed there since I was a youngster! It was really rough and scary round there. Now it looks all gentrified! Haven’t been there in over 30 years. Very enjoyable tour!
@Orwic1

I lived there in the late 70s. It could be rough and ready, but I did like living there. Yes, it’s changed big time - you can see it on streetview. Not walked around those streets for a long time. I keep telling myself I should visit there one day. I’d probably still like it, but I can’t help feeling I’d be disappointed too.
Yaaaayyyy!!!! Joolz!!! Excellent highlight today after all the bleak news in this part of the world
Nice one son, you just showed the world where Freddy's private resting place is. Which is not what he or his family wanted to be revealed. At least you featured in your exclusive revealing video showing that you are happy and excited, that's important and what really matters isn't it.
Wellcome back sir,more please 😁👍👏👏👏
Simon, Simon, that was brilliant! (Love you, as always, Joolz!)
Just discovered your channel it's fantastic...There used to be a club night in the crypt of the deptford church..I went to goth/punk night around 1988
Yay! Deptford atlast 👍🏼
My local and favourite pub in London featuring at the end there! The Dog and Bell, highly recommend if anyone’s ever in the area. Lovely atmosphere and stunning range of craft and European beer
Just want to say that your "tours" have been my salvation through struggling with COVID CRAP and my mental health......THANK YOU SO MUCH ,JOOLZ ! Baz x
I was brought up in Deptford and lived there for 20 years from the late 1950s until 1979 and I've learnt more watching your video than I ever knew before!! Fascinating stuff! Thank you
Top notch video Joolz . That area is bursting with gorgeous buildings and interesting nuggets of history. And please don’t go Simon 🙏 you are the perfect foil to Joolz’s rapier wit. PS Arthur Beales (the chandler in Covent Garden) closed down not so long ago 😢

Deptford is where Jim , from 28 Days Later lived. He walked there , along the train tracks to discover his dead parents.. Great Video again Joolz ..
A most welcome return. Ta for a fascinating unfolding of historic bric-a-brac & more! By the by, is it not the case that Cpt Bligh was the opposite of how 'M. on the Bounty' depicts him, and that he was a highly respected man of the sea, as necessarily strict as all his contemporaries, and indeed, crews returned to work for him, which betokens the esteem within which he was held? Weren't the mutineers being rather silly?
I always enjoy your tours, but for some reason this was one of my favorites--good job to you and your compadres.
Wonderful! Great Virtual Tour! 👍👍😊😊 AWESOME! Enjoyed it!
That was bloody spiffing, old chap! Pepys wrote his diary in shorthand and code. He was smarter than your average philanderer.

Was waiting for you to go to Deptford! I lived just around the corner from Drakes Steps for 11 years, so much history in such a small space. Love this video, so glad to see you back!
Brings back many happy memories for me, I lived in Deptford for 13 years, looks like a lot has changed since I moved away. I did not know that about Dire straits though and my friend lived in that block.
Nice to have you back.
Great video as always Joolz! Sadly they can no longer raise Ha'penny hatch ( or Creek bridge as I know it) due to the rail that runs across it being continuous and without the necessary break.
Everything has a bit of history especially when it goes on in London,, loved the facts of the modern saying and what it had come from,, great show, from Northern Ireland ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️
Wow what a great tale.
Really enjoyed watching you’re videos, very entertaining and informative.
Hi again Great videos mate .So these landing stations have been abandoned for over 120 years that's amazing18:30 I live in Deptford now and jog along this area every day,
Simon sounds like Johnny aka (car pervert). Awesome video, cheers
Stay Safe Jules!! Looks like it'll be a long testing Winter, hope you and your family stay healthy.
Another tid-bit about Albury Street... Legend has it that Lord Nelson used to meet up with his mistress, Lady Hamilton at number 34 Albury Street. Also, it’s a shame you missed the caskets stored in the entrance walls of the Crypt at St Paul’s Church. Last time I went there, you could see them clearly through a hole in the wall. They may have been moved now but it was well creepy. Don’t suppose you could get into St. Nicholas church, but if you had, you’d have seen the most marvellous wood carvings by Grinling Gibbons.

Yes, I’ve heard that about Lord Nelson. I used to live in Albury Street just a few doors down from there. If only I could have bought that house! A great place to live. But that’s real fantasy land thinking of course.
I love all these videos about London, I love hearing how people from Liverpool played a part in the development of it too, loved the story of Ferranti, also His granddaughter Valerie Hunter Gordon invented what is considered the world's first disposable nappy and an early sanitary towel system.[1]

Absolutely fantastic my friend my wife and I adore depford plus it's just a quick walk to my beloved millwall London by birth millwall the grace of God x
So glad your back missed your cool witty interesteting videos
One of my ancestors was the midshipman on the Royal George, he was on the maiden voyage out of Chatham dockyard and when it made the turn for the Thames Estury, the ship took on water via a loading hatch and sank. His name was Monins Hollingbery and he had a reasonable career in the navy after the sinking.
Love it Joolz. Your doing London a great service. You should receive an award. Great camera man and soundtrack Best to you all!
I love watching your videos, so interesting. You and your sister make me laugh.
Joolz you ARE a Jewel... Thank you and take care so you may post many more videos.
Great video! I used to live in Deptford, and work there too. Nostalgia time...
Your dance in the park was quite charming. Joolz and his "henchmen" rock!
The house where Dire Straits cut their first CD was amazing to see. I bought it the year it was release.
If you want a "different" pub experience in Deptfors, check out the White Swan on Deptford High Street. In there midweek at about 3pm and they were playing some Hard Trance and everyone was on coke and pills. We stayed for a drink, then ran away as we were freaked out!!!! It's a must!!!
thank you for mentioning Farrer house, he is a master guitar player to many of us. Muswell hill and woodgreen sometime next maybe?
Excellent accompanying music!
My grandfather was born on Watergate Street, the same street where Marlowe was stabbed. As a toddler in the mid-19th Century, he was whisked away to America because Watergate neighborhood was a slum then, as well as in Elizabethan times, and still when my mother (who was named Evelyn--who says babies can't remember?) and I visited in the 1980's. It must have been greatly gentrified recently or you have selected the best parts of Deptford to show.
Part of my paternal family was originally from Deptford some emmegrated to New Zealand from first settling in Australia. During my one and only time I visited London I was unable to visit Deptford having then to be contented with copping a view of the destination board on a big red double decker bus, that read; Deptford Bridge.
What a wonderful way to start my day ... with the return of Joolz!
Always Fantastic.. Thanks a lot, especially during these difficult times, you bring Light and Joy, with these Wonderful and extremely interesting Videos...
Very enjoyable, thanks all! Wonderful Maritime history, Architecture and Sea Shanties, Deptford has a lot to see!
Homesick Expat living in California .....you are so knowledgeable
Great stuff Joolz. As usual I'll need to watch it 2 or 3 times to catch all the subtleties. Including the singing by LLL !!!
Good guide Joolz. Went to school in Creek road. Pepys diary was originally written in code, a type of short hand so no need to hide it from the missus under the bed. 8-)
Louisa knows her stuff😌🤘🏽🎵
Nicely done Joolz. When I can safely get back to London, Deptford and Greenwich are a magnet. Cheers
I think this might be the most interesting part of London
Simon NEEDS his own set! Rock On!
I love your videos so much, Julian. This is another outstanding one.
Brockley would be a great area too to talk about it. Amazing history with shipping business owners , Ed Watt and more
I'm so glad your videos are back! Had to rewind quickly when you mentioned Samuel Pepys diary; I thought you said "Bagwell." You did, indeed. That is a name our family is associated with, so now, because of you, I have to go and read his diary. Love the education one receives while watching. So much better than the dry books and boring history professors in college.
Thank you. Another extremely interesting and formative video. Merry Xmas
Hey Joolz...Thoroughly enjoyed the video...but loved your black watch tartan trews. When I was 18 years old (60 years ago), and a bit of a dandy, I had a pair made for me exactly like these. Was working in a bank at the time and on wearing them to work was carpeted by the manager who expressed strong objections to my loud attire. Look forward to your next stylish tour...Rob (now living in Hobart, Tasmania)
Absolutely love your videos.
