LMS 6233 - The Duchess Attacks The Lickey Bank With Gusto !
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Please stand back from the edge of Platform two ! Wise words indeed from the automated station announcement. LMS Princess Coronation Class Duchess Of Sutherland rolls back the years with a barnstorming run through Bromsgrove station as the loco approaches the bottom of the 1/38 Lickey Bank on the evening run of the Lickey Bank specials which also featured Clun Castle In The Morning !
This topped off a memorable day for steam enthusiasts and hardcore purists. Steam is incredibly rare up the Lickey Incline and even rarer with only one loco, so this was an event not to be missed. If you've watched the morning run with 7029 and now 6233 through Bromsgrove and want to no which loco performed better then I'll tell you.
Both locos have just less than a two mile run towards the foot of the Lickey Incline and its all uphill at 1/283 towards the new railway station meaning no half measures would be acceptable, so full power is needed. So the morning run with Clun Castle would see the loco accelerate from Stoke Works at 30mph , just over 1.5 miles later the Castle roared through Bromsgrove at 63mph, now there's just a little bit of little bit of 1/105 and 1/186 for less than 1/4 of a mile and than you're into the 1/38 Lickey Incline. Clun Castle crested the Summit at 33mph ! How would the Duchess compare ?
6233 passed Bromsgrove at 61mph with a speed just a shade under the Castle, the bigger and more powerful loco did not better the Great Western Castle and remarkably matched Clun's 33mph minimum over the summit.
A tremendous day for all concerned and I hope you have enjoy the videos !

“The next train at platform 2 does not stop here.” You don’t say.. Great video!
Hi from Mr. Solway, in Green Bay Wisconsin, U.S.A.!! FANTASTIC!!!!!
Perfect as usual. What is even more beautiful and touching , in the age of quantum computing and mRNA vaccines etc., is all those ordinary people loving the sight of a steam train at full tilt. Beauty is indeed timeless.
Superb video Liam and Phil. The Duchess stormed through the station. The was a packed station. No social distancing there. Great day filming Kind regards C&A
I don't really go on KZread much these days but you've smashed it today with this and Clun Castle. Top quality

Cheers Simon, just glad to be there to witness it ! Hope you're well ?
That was your most brilliant clip of Duchess of Sutherland yet. So much i re watched it to get that thrash of 6233. She definitely wasn't mucking around that's for sure
Great coverage, thank you!
What a tremendous sight! Do my keen ears hear a class 20 idling somewhere in the background?
Nothing like a steamer on a cold evening for creating an atmospheric memory . Nice footage
that was b.. marvelous!thank you for sharing this with us -sending regards xxxxx
She looks and sounds fantastic!
Blimey, enough people there ?
That was moving ,Fantastic.
Great video found out earlier she's going past chesterfield this Saturday coming up can't wait great video 😀😀
The sound of the engine approaching the station is almost haunting.
Great clip taken there' what a very smart looking station now at Bromsgrove' looks much longer and has been Electrified I guess to New street,!!
Nothing can equal the sound of a mainline steam loco going full tilt at over 70 miles an hour.
Sensational footage! Most impressive to hear a Duchess at full cry. Majestic beyond all means. I also loved your video of the GWR Clun Castle attacking the famous Lickey Incline as well. A mate from the UK sent it to me. Only wish we had mainline steam in South Australia still 😔. Only areas of our country you can see mainline steam is throughout the East in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. We haven’t had mainline steam in SA since 1995, the year I was born. I’m aching to get to your lovely country to see mainline steam and over 500 miles of preserved railway line you guys have over there. Quite spectacular really. Number 6233 Duchess of Sutherland is one of my favourite LMS engines. It’s great to see her in LMS Crimson Lake Livery 😍. Not such a fan of the BR Green Livery that she was in previously I’d have to say. Anyhoo, great video as always and thanks for sharing with us. Keep well. Regards, Caleb
I used to see the "semis" in the late 50's and early 60's on the 1in 100 just north of Wigan North Western - an amazing sight and sound on the Royal Scot and the lightweight Caledonian with their wonderful headboards and tailboards. The Jubs and Scots sounded great too with their 3 cylinder chatter.....great memories.

Somebody once said that there are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe the sound of a Duchess in full cry
Great stuff thanks. Bromsgrove station has certainly had a major makeover since I last visited

Its a completely new station, its a few hundred yards further down from the original station. A good upgrade as the old station was a rotting mess. Many thanks.
Magnificent!
Nice to see it working hard, the sound must been wonderful within the station building. No diesel either!

It was indeed, the audio doesn't really give justice.
A good choice to go slightly up the stairs, I took a step ladder to Barnt Green and found some space on the footbridge!
Thanks for the excellent and atmospheric footage. Interesting comparison, isn't it? Of course the introduction of double chimneys to the Castles upped the drawbar horsepower somewhat, although tractive effort remained as before (although TE was only ever a technical comparator). Maybe on especially steep gradients the extra weight of the Princess Coronation class counts against them to a proportionately greater degree, whereas on a more moderate but longer 1/75 climb like Shap, the large firebox of the 'Duchess' pays dividends in terms of higher sustainable DBHP. Loco condition is always another factor, of course (though both seem to be in great shape).

@@MarshSteamVideosTM Yeah. I thought that. Weirdly, I did actually bump into him in Bowness on a completely non-train-related day out.
👍👍
Bloody Hell!! What an absolute belter!! Stunning shots!! Is she a newly restored engine or what because I haven't really seen anything about her before a couple weeks ago!
