I've seen 3 Black Fives in the span of just over a year: No. 5000 at Locomotion, plus 5428 "Eric Treacy" and 44806 (which I call Lostock Hall) at the NYMR. They're ok and powerful machines, but after you've seen three they become a little less impressive. I'll be honest: I'm a bit sick of seeing Eric Treacy, as it's been running every time I've been on the NYMR since June 2023.

Re-building the Merchant navy clas was one of the soundest engineering decisions BR made. Stripping away Bullieds excentricities reavealed what a fine engine lay underneath. Capacity to raise steam that coped with heavy demands over extended periods was what counts on the S Devon banks. The kings handled it well on the high octane coal they were designed for but their smaller fireboxes stuggled with the later lower quality coal.

I grew up with black 5's in the late 30's and early 40's. We only got excited when a Burgundy (LMS) or green (LNER) named express engine flew past. How times have changed.

So you were trying not to show us how hard the diesel was working, but it was still obvious from its black smoke. Shame it had to be there, those two could have taken 12 up the Lickey unassisted, but 12 plus that diesel would have been just too much. Good filming even so, really enjoyed that.

Fantastic video content as always. I had the pleasure of being on the Shakespeare Express from Derby; on the return leg our phone GPS was telling us we reached 75mph on both Tamworth-Burton and Burton-Derby legs, so a great way to end out the day. Also good to see the Grange finally accumulating some miles.
