    Awesome video you got there. It is nice to see a locomotive going all out. Watching the video on youtube with the volume turned up,I could feel like I was there. You over there across the pond know how to put on a show. Good old time railroading with hand-firing mainline steam. Keep up the good work.

    A great piece of footage and loved the fact that she was shooting fire passing beneath the bridge. I envy you guys having so much steam to chase after in the UK. I don't envy the crowd scene you have to put up with.

    This is such an awesome display of steam power that it surprises me that this video hasn't been viewed a lot more. The way that the exhaust steam bounces off the overbridge!!! Then the way the engine thunders by!!! Regulator, cut off open to the max. Has anyone posted any of the ascent? Showing the actual cresting of the incline would be the icing on the cake! Must have been exciting to be there. Great vid.

    there was a similiar case with Tangmere, apparantly, coming up from Weymouth. The diesel broke down so Tangmere (this was when she was still working) pulled a 9 or so coach train up the hill-just about! Although at times they were moving at a walking pace.

    It is approaching the incline very rapidly. If my memory serves me correctly, from getting on for 60 years ago, there was a sharp bend just out of Bromsgrove station which would have made this speed impossible. Most passenger trains stopped at this station because the ticket collector got on here. (New Street had no ticket barriers. ) What used to amaze me was that the bankers joined in the station and the whole thing was a dead start just a short distance from where the incline started. Trains that did not stop at Bromsgrove were banked from over by the old wagon works which meant they could get up to 15 mph or maybe more before tackling the bank. Please correct any memory malfunction!

    R.A.Riddles wrote an introduction in "Pacific Steam", Map publication 1961, "How sad that the last steam locomotive for this country has been built! A natural development for passenger work would have been a 4-8-0, with a wide firebox, with powers of bank climbing, acceleration and deceleration ...." Considering the fabulous success of the 9F I think that a 4-8-0 Mountain would fit in your fantasy railway.

    yes, going under that bridge is like sticking a cork in a bottle, just for a second and the increase in air pressure pushes the gasses back through the boiler tubes and if the fire hole door is open, straight into the cab, which it did

    It's also on record that I was King of All the Russias. A Jubilee would get stuck not much over halfway up with 14, and it would take two of them to get 14 up the bank and even then it would be close-run thing. You'd be surprised how quickly the speed falls off on hitting the gradient. The bank is only a little over 2 miles but that's quite enough to bring the speed down to a slow steady figure.

    @palmerstonian I'm not going to get into pre-nationalisation rivalries, but just remember who designed them (William Stanier) and where he spent most of his working life (Swindon)!

  • @geoffduckworth1333

    @geoffduckworth1333

    3 жыл бұрын

    It was not a true Stanier design. They were a development of Fowler's 3 cylinder Patriot class where Stanier replaced the parallel boiler with his taper design to become the Jubilee class. The GWR did not favour the 3 cylinder concept so not something Stanier would have been familiar with plus the boiler was initially a disappointment and needed modifications before the locos were successful.

    The captions suggest the train should have had assistance. This was never the plan - the train was only 6 coaches so that 5690 would have no problems with the gradient. She went over the top in fine style! Lovely sound and, for hand-held, not bad pictures. Not sure it _quite_ justifies "awsome" and "brilliant" comments. ;-)

    @robinsummerhill ...even if this is the case, and I'm not saying it isn't, the captions are still wrong. You can't attach a pilot to the rear of a train...a Pilot goes on the front (or in rear of the train engine if in anyway related to the GWR). Caption should read "Banker" for "Pilot".

  • @Stevewhosnotsteve
    @Stevewhosnotsteve13 жыл бұрын

    @robinsummerhill actually wrong. Ordinarilly with the regulator wide open the draft from the blastpipe pulls the fire away from the cab. It is the passing under the bridge at full regulator that caused the blowback in this instance.
