A steam locomotive can do this when the fireman really shovels hard. Most of the time British steam locos were operated well below their capacity because of understandable human limitations. It's a pity that mechanical stokers were not fitted, especially on larger locos like 9Fs, A1s and Duchesses. People always say we did not need them for 1950s schedules. But if we had had them, we could have potentially have tightened up schedules and pulled bigger loads.

Don't British trains have to whistle (or honk) before passing a station platform? In the U.S., it's usually horn and bell. Did the engineer get so preoccupied with the regulator that he forgot to whistle?
@taffy4023 жыл бұрын
No bells, some engines have hooters and whistles to give warning or say hello to passers by, but its not mandatary although they give a whistle or a hoot to give warning they are about to start away from a platform stop.

Yes you guys, she made it all on her own,.But it was not the first time ,back in the early 5os it was a regular thing Saltley crew full of confidence that a banker would catch up ,we would get behind the under road bridge and go like hell for the top 6 7 mins whistle away at the top.G

The wheel spin from that car going across the line at the end was unnecessary in my opinion. I wish people would drive in a more civilised way and not think the road is a race track. otherwise, great sound of steam and whistle blowing.

It is approaching the incline very rapidly. If my memory serves me correctly, from getting on for 60 years ago, there was a sharp bend just out of Bromsgrove station which would have made this speed impossible. Most passenger trains stopped at this station because the ticket collector got on here. (New Street had no ticket barriers. ) What used to amaze me was that the bankers joined in the station and the whole thing was a dead start just a short distance from where the incline started. Trains that did not stop at Bromsgrove were banked from over by the old wagon works which meant they could get up to 15 mph or maybe more before tackling the bank. Please correct any memory malfunction!

yes, going under that bridge is like sticking a cork in a bottle, just for a second and the increase in air pressure pushes the gasses back through the boiler tubes and if the fire hole door is open, straight into the cab, which it did
