5690 'Leander' attacks the Lickey Incline 25th March 2006.wmv

Watching the 'Double Lickey Banker' today reminded me it was six years ago almost to the day that 'Leander' stormed up unassisted so here is a 'better late than never' clip. The first two clips are of the outward journey filmed at Hatherley, Cheltenham and at Over near Gloucester. The noise/roar as she stormed through Bromsgrove Station was amazing, the air as well as the footbridge seemed to vibrate.

I was a 16-year apprentice when Leander came to Derby from Barry for resteration. I had to measure and turn all the copper firebox stays, a job I will not forget in a hurry. the screeching of dry cutting them was painful to the ears. I also did the Brass bearings and machined many other moving parts. I guess I was one of the few apprentices that signed up to work on diesel such as Peaks (class 44 / 45) bo-bo's and even the new APT that was designed at Derby and when old George machined the main bogi that was the self steering bit, he comments were, it will never work. How right he was.

Those were the days you knew men from the boys, was a fireman for three and a half years. We have chased many trains through the station, and a quarter the way up the bank, the night mails and parcels were worst, but now just memories.

The fireman certainly earned his cup of tea!! just the right colour of smoke.. What happened to standing behind the yellow line?? Especially with your back to the traffic.

I remember my father taking me to my local station on that day and I remember seeing Leander easing off power as it came towards a amber signal ahead

I was actually chatting with the driver (Ray Poole) today at an ex BR guys get together, he remembers it well and is still working mainline steam for WCRC..... We doubt that NR would let him chance it today though lol !! I've hammered up the incline a few times with 5X's but never without a banker......

Probably a silly question considering it was only 6 coaches, but did she make it?

All those people waiting for a train. Just to see it, not to get on it. Wouldn't happen with a Pendulino!

Reminds me of No51 'Blink Bonny' on the South Yorkshireman (a Special) in the early sixties, where speeds well into the 90s were achieved. All very well, but there were only seven 'on'...
