The Double Lickey Banker, 24th March 2012. Lizzie Levels Lickey, 6201 + L94 & 9600

Whilst, I am sure virtually everyone welcomed the unseasonable summer heat of the weekend, for steam photographers, the conditions that prevailed on the day were "challenging" to say the least and thus consigned all my plans for the first and last locations well and truly "to the bin"! and not to be outdone, my planned second location also had a nasty surprise in store!! Foregoing the planned long shot from the hills at Corston, the hazy conditions forced me to join many others closer to the track. Lizzy rushes out of the mist, performing well as she streaks past the admiring throng with plenty of steam from the exhaust. Finding the bridge at Bonnington Walk closed to an away shot due to work on a new water main, I was forced to use the bridge at Lockleaze with a shorter approach, so I have put on a little more soundtrack of the approaching Princess as she easily takes on the climb of Horfield Bank pulling only nine coaches, but this time with no steam, as the day had warmed to an incredible 23degC!. Finally to the Lickey Bank, my first ever visit, and again terrible air quality and bright sunshine wiped out my planned shots from up on the hills. Whilst looking for an uncrowded spot lower down, a very friendly "Country Gent" (might even have been the landowner?) took pity on me and directed me down through some trees where I just had time to set up for a trackside view straight into the sun where, despite appearances, I am actually on the correct side of the railway fence! Enjoy the soundtrack: definitely "Heavy Metal" on that climb!
Note:
The WCML is now electrified and the wonderful open views down the Lickey Incline seen here have now been consigned to history amid a forest of gantries for the overhead wires.
Oh well, that's progress!

Spine tingling footage and rounded off spectacularly with the 2 pannier tanks! Just love seeing steam facing the challenges of the Lickey. In early 60's, I believe pannier tanks of the 94xx variety was the stable diet rather than those seen here with the odd Jinty thrown in for good measure. Finally, and just a thought. I cannot understand those who become hysterical about diesels on the same incline. I find there is just no comparison!

Hi again Tim and thank you for the kind and interesting comments. The Corston shot probably looks different from the usual in that I had to cut in very close to track level in order to cut out all the heads that were in front of me and I guess that gives more of an impression of a "pacing" shot. It is true: Lizzie is huge! in fact they have to fit (yellow) extenders to the Churston turntable in order to fit her on! see my "Lizzie takes a Lashing" clip 1:57 onwards (low def). Alan

Hello Luke and thank you for your kind, interesting and very much appreciated comments. I have not been back since electrification and I expect the "down the track" shots are pretty messed-up with gantries now. Maybe more of a side-on view from up on the hill on either side would still be O.K. though? Best regards, Alan

@@Steamclips I have seen a recent video at a foot crossing by pikes pool. The view is framed by the gantries. I’ll be there from early tomorrow to try it out filming. If the location is impossible I’ll settle for the side on shots. Are you heading there tomorrow? 46100 & 45231 are climbing the bank

Hi Ryan: yes, it's one of the few well known locations I have never filmed or photographed. I was lucky to get a little "local" assistance at the last minute, otherwise my filming might have been very restricted. I think we may have seen you as we were driving through Burcot afterwards, but we were in a lot of traffic and couldn't stop. Maybe see you on one of the Cornish tours if we can avoid a steam ban this year! Alan

Finally catching up from last weekend - thanks Alan, very much enjoyed this clip! The Lickey shot is hands down the spectacular one but I very much enjoyed your Corston shot too. Not quite sure what's different about it, perhaps the elevation angle or just the speed but I very much like how elegant Lizzie looks here. I often think the Princesses look a bit long round the firebox and cab but she looks great in that clip particularly. Thanks for all your work shooting and sharing! Tim

Alan - another extraordinary treat for us - thankyou. Fortuitous chat with the Country Gent, eh. I notice L94 is star of another video of yours - "Brave Little Pannier" I think. Is she 'at home' on the SDR, or rented out to whomsoever? Would this be a railtour that runs with whatever the company thinks might be enticing - thus Lizzie and L94, plus the other pannier I couldn't catch? Whatever, I'm glad that you were able to capture it. Thanks again

Hi Peter:Thank you for more lovely remarks, I really appreciate it. L97 is in the Tyseley collection, see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyseley_Locomotive_Works and the tour operating arm of the collection; Vintage Trains, ran this tour. Vintage trains also have locomotives on loan to service their tours and on this occasion 60201 and 9600 were "guesting". Quite often guest locomotives have recently undergone servicing at Tyseley locomotive works. Best wishes, Alan

There is no such thing as trespassing on farmer's land.. don't be conned.. They pulled that law years ago as the right to ramble is a basic human right in England. There are very valid reasons why.. look it up. So long as you're courteous, respectful you farmer's property (no littering for example) they can't touch you

Thanks for your reply Alan. My comments were solely related to the happenings on the screen and not your video, which was very well done. Yes, of course, you are right; they are a show and bear little resemblance to what real steam operation was.
