    @@nigelmitchell351 Not sure I understand? GL? There is a Beyer Garrat there. I think it was narrow guage 2ft 6in or something for South Africa? They did try one on Lickey but it was too slow and ponderous. Ah! yes, here you are: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNER_Class_U1 I recall someone telling me that it was too tight in the guage over the points for crossing to the down track to return to Bromsgrove. (Up and down terminology had real meaning there!)

    i lived at this spot during the steam era....it was quite common for engines to slip...it's all about timing,getting it right between the leading and banking engines, the bankers don,t seem to take effect until it reaches the start of the platform,so until then the princess was pulling a much heavier load thus causing the slipping....

    I lived around there too. I missed big Bertha but they had a 9F there and several tankes like those in this film . I remember seeing one very long train taking off with 3 engines on back and another one chasing after which caught up about 400 yards onto the bank. I think the drivers doing this job had quite a fun time. I think it was hard work for the stokers. they would be stripped to the waist in summer.

    Total tractive effort anyone, my guess 33’000 for the Princess and 24’000 for both “ matchbox’s “ 57’000 lbs tractive effort.

    57,000 lbs is about the same total tractive effort as 1 Class 47. Plus the acceleration on the diesel would be quicker. I think this event was put on for show as I think the Princess would have no problem with that small load up the Lickey.

    What on gods earth is a "double lickey banker"... ?

  • @JohnSmith-pd1fz

    @JohnSmith-pd1fz

    5 жыл бұрын

    ++FalconXE302++ Well the Lickey is the bank or gradient, a long hill if you like. Sometimes more than one locomotive is required to get the train, that is the carriages or load, to the top of the hill so a second specialised locomotive, the Banker, is kept ready in the area for just such occasions. It assists the hauling locomotive up the hill by pushing the rear of the train. Sometimes one Banker is not enough so two are used, a Double, one pushing the other and together pushing the train itself. Arrangements of points and additional tracks enabled the Bankers to return to the bottom of the hill without blocking the main line, as soon as their work was done.

    @@JohnSmith-pd1fz Nice bit of mansplaining. But I suspect the "Lickey" was what was causing the trouble, It's a place, near Bromsgrove UK and where the incline is. It didn't help that it wasn't capitalised.

    @@JohnSmith-pd1fz One some occasions, as many as four bankers were used to help trains up the Lickey. See kzread.info/dash/bejne/amRmqZKLlrCdobA.html . Note that the bankers are ex-GWR panniers rather than LMS Jintys although bankers were rated in terms of Jinky equivalents. So a banker might be a 1 (equivalent to one Jinty) or a 2 (equivalent to two Jintys) and so on.

    well, the coordination needed for the bankers to open their regulators was notoriously difficult, and obviously no one's had practice of this in decades aside from a few events like this, so the quality of the banking, so to speak, probably isn't as good as in the actual steam days, neither is the skill the drivers possess either

    Also, I've recently seen (old) calculation as to just how much surface area the wheels put down on the track. For a large engin it's about half a square inch or somthing. So even despite the weight, its a wonder they didn't slip more. Perhaps the need pnuematic tyres? Oh, I've just invented the bus!
