Bittern & The Duchess - Whistling contest at Rugby.
LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 no 60019 (4464) Bittern and LMS Coronation Class 8P 4-6-2 no 46233 Duchess of Sutherland enter into a Whistling contest when they meet at Rugby, Heading separate rail tours. For a while a freight liner '66 was in the way, but that pushed off joining in with the two tones. Even a Virgin Trains Pendolino got into the act. Edit yes I got the date wrong and the destination. It was a long day and a lot of editing to be done!

Don't see it as a battle, see it as two old steel giants paying respect to each other.
How has it taken me so long to find this amazing video! One of Stanier's legends meeting one of Gresley's legends, nothing could be more glorious. I may need a minute, I seem to have something in my eye.... :)

It is a very special treat indeed. Personally I favor the Duchess over Bittern simply due to their valve gears. But this was a legendary video. I would love to see 3 Locomotives from the 3 Groups all whistle battle. For me that would be 60009 Union of South Africa from LNER, 6027 Princess Elizabeth from LMS, and Kind Edward II from GWR.
So pleased Bittern was preserved. It was the first A4 pacific I 'copped'. Idle in the yard at York in 1963 I think. It looked majestic.

The first A4 pacific was actually 2509 (60014) Silver Link But bittern ran the last A4 powered train under British Railways

Not only the steam trains in the contest the diesels and electrics are joining in too lol

bus2birds I thank you.
This doesn't happen often, nice one!
I was there but in the evening when they were making the return trip. Great to see one engine leave and another one arrive.
I remember this happening at Laira earlier this year with 5043 and 5029
Fantastic whistle contest from all four locos Jeff. Cameron
Wow! That A4 pulled away like an HST125!

cute... 1:58 'is that the flying scotsman'. nope. ^^ great capture. love seeing two steam locomotives pass as they run charters, brings back the olden days ?
I'll bet that caused a little confusion among the enthusiasts that day, as well as excitement; which one do we snap/video? :P
Excellent video
This is wholesome.
Quite fine engines!
A4 vs Coronation Class......don't make me choose.....love 'em both....I'm old enough - and lucky enough - to have seen both in working order, trainspotting at Doncaster with the A1/2/3/4s and the occasional visit to Crewe for the LMS stuff....happy days long gone....
Thankyou for a great capture of these two wonderful locomotives. I’m a compulsive coach counter, I have to know how many coaches the loco is handling. It’s always a joy when the last coach passes without an intrusive diesel hanging on the back,as in the case of Bittern, and a slight disappointment when you see one of the infernal things grumbling away, as the Duchess had. I’m sure there are perfectly valid operational reasons for the diesel being present, but you always have the sneaking feeling that a rear end shove is taking place. This ever so slightly spoils the authenticity of the occasion for me, or am I possibly just being a bit churlish?

The filmer: trying to film the Duchess of Sutherland and the A4 The class 390s and 66:imma bout to block this man’s whole view!
Ok, so we have Flying Scotman and Spencer...... Wait, where is Gorden?
Now here's the real question: Gresley Chime, or Stanier Hooter?

I'll answer the question with a question - which one made your ears bleed more?
Bittern with his blood and custard livery team coach. Hooting of passing PANDOLINO virgin trains on the London to Wolverhampton route.
Sounds like a few big kids having a bit of fun
As a kid i used to go train spotting. Think i may have seen some of these trains mind you that's a century ago.
That's a busy station, plenty to watch....
That was Kool. The most powerful British loco meets it's fastest locomotive......

No the Duchy isn't the most powerful. 70010 Duke of Gloucester is the most powerful. It's a rebuilt Class 8F

Coolest steam trains ever
Just gonna say, even though mainline steam engines are, I'd say oversaturated with BR green and black, the dutchess looks great in Brunswick green

I believe it was the same 4-6-2 arrangement and the correct livery colour, could be forgiven at first glance to make this mistake.... Although the name on the side is a little give away...😉😏
Hehe you did great there. Probably the only vid at Rugby with no bald heads in sight! Did you really take a step ladder all the way to Rugby to film that? Cheers, Dave.

Bittern 27 Duchess 22, good match. 4 tries a piece.
Like two old horses whinneying at one another.
Nice one. A couple of errors, the date 24th isn't that meant to be the 22nd? Also Bitten was traveling from Euston to Chester...........Cheers, Nathan

nothin wrong with 66s there the backbone of the freight really these days plus the horn tones it did i think it was paying its respect to bittern and duchess of Sutherland
As in every other department, it's nice to see the A4 getting the better of the Coronation in the whistling stakes ;-)

Gresley designed them fir the LNER - btw it means 'Lunatics, Nutters, Egoistic and Robbers!', where the line was almost flatter than a billiard table. Meanwhile Stanier designed the Coronations for LMS - Lots More Steam!, where the line has some rather steep gradients: Camden Bank, Lickey Incline, Grayling Bank, Shap and Beattock. When Gresley's 'duck' did the ton plus 25, it was pulling 8 coaches!, the Coronations produced something (from memory) like 35000 foot pounds of steam at the top of Shap or Beattock, something Gresley's never achieved; and had a lot of excess steam as they came over the summits. Oh and they pulled regularly 12 or more coaches unbanked over Shap and Beattock!
LMS vs. LNER! Who will win? XD

It WAS LMS Black and Maroon before this. Then they moved onto this one. Bittern had been blue for AGES at this point.
