Living the life of food allergies | Julia Cecilia | TEDxWhitneyHigh

“Developing a treatment for food allergy is like convincing your 3 year-old that peas are better than ice cream. It is tough, but sometimes it can be done.” Julia Cecilia is a current 11th grader, attending Troy High School. She is a member of the Troy Varsity Dance Team and has been dancing outside of school for 6 years. Along with her passion for dancing, she enjoys playing the piano during her spare time. She also enjoys public speaking and discussing various topics through programs such as Mock Trial and Speech & Debate. She enjoys engaging with her community through volunteering at senior livings and the CHOC club. Julia is honored and excited to be a student speaker for Whitney High School's TED event.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you for this video. I have the same list of food allergies which developed in my 20s and 30s after having children. I've been struggling to cope with this new reality. Thank you for being an advocate for people with food allergies!

i relate so much to how happy you feel when u find a new food you can eat. im allergic to peanuts. i used to be allergic to treenuts and milk, but i outgrew those allergies. my peanut allergy is severe. i literally want to meet u though because FINALLY someone else understands what its like. you are someone that i can relate to and i look up to you for being so positive during everything that happened. thank you.

Hi Clara, My 2 year old son is allergic to dairy and eggs. Curious, when did you outgrow these allergies.

I also relate to this post. I have had a diagnosed severe tree-nut allergy since I was 10 years old. I have been admitted to the er multiple times with anaphylaxis. Over the years, I've learned to avoid peanuts(legumes and not true tree nuts)and seeds due to cross contamination that landed me in the hospital unexpectedly . I've also avoided all deserts for this same reason. Family and friends seem so offended that I won't try the cake they made for set occasion. Further more I constantly have to ask co-workers to not eat certain foods around me and they seem so put off. I also carry an epi pen. They are expensive and I prefer to never be in a situation where I have to stab myself in the leg while panicking and causing a scene. I have also developed oral allergy syndrome and alot of healthy foods I used to eat are now questionable as to whether or not it's safe to eat. There's only soo many pre-set allergen tests. With oral allergy syndrome I may have anaphylactic reactions to a food that isn't a common . You might too. Celery is a common one and Celery is in more than you realize. It's in almost every spice or breading. And I would like to say that I am fortunate for not having wheat, egg, and soy allergies. It would just be so much harder, given they make up a huge portion of American diets.. I personally am trying to figure out how live and eat without the possibility of an awkwardly dramatic moment.

@@nikitaaaaa3 research says quality of life for people with Allergies are as much affected as those with diabetes... Even normal MD doctors don't have any clue regarding how to deal with Allergies and ... In my case physician doctors are the ones who made it worse... By experimenting with broad spectrum antibiotics....

Julia... just embrace your condition .. probably you gonna live with it forever... In my case... I have been allergic to almost all kinds of food...I remember since 5 yrs old ... I have been eating the same food over and over again ... then I learned to fast and eat the right kind of food... I only eat twice or once a day with the same food ... I live... and learn to love my life ...now that I am 60 I am still allergic to food...I learn to cook/prepare food so delicious without getting an allergic reaction... one problem ... I can't eat leftovers... so I have to eat them all at that the same day... Good luck and stay healthy always...

I've had a very similar experience with food allergies. I'm allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, and coconut. Growing up, I always felt excluded because I wasn't able to participate in food-related events. Travelling was also very difficult. Thank you for sharing!

My father had an Allergic reaction when he was bitten by a Fire Ant. At first he just got the usual giant rash, itchy skin, and burning pain that comes with a Fire Ant's bite, but then he stopped breathing and passed out. We rushed him to the hospital in our car because we couldn't afford an ambulance. When we got there the nurses insisted that we waited, but when they saw my dad, they rushed him in. He's okay now, but he could have died. Anyway we now live where there aren't Fire Ants.

I have very sensitive food intolerance. Once one thing breaks my immune system goes into shock. It makes living hard and depression becomes extreme to the point where I don't want to live.

At the ripe age of 31, I developed a nut, soy, sesame, wheat allergy. Although maybe I already had a wheat allergy. I always thought wheat worsen my dermatitis. I have always been allergic to shrimp but found out it's all shellfish.

I think many times what we call an allergie is actually a buildup of things that on a micro scale is needed or at least tolerated in the body but in larger amounts are toxic or deadly . I started having a reaction to eggs and onions after eating egg sandwiches every single day for years , and I became so sensitive that I almost died from not being able to breathe from a very small amount . But I did an elimination diet to figure it out and by not eating that for several years have become much less sensitive ! I think the culprit was a buildup of sulfur . I just wanted to let people know that there sensitivity , maybe reversable , by eliminating the rite foods !

why are you trying to one up each other? you have no idea what is hard for anyone or what they are going through, and one person struggling more than someone else doesnt invalidate their struggles. its not a competition for people to feel bad for you
