The Effects Of Artificial Food Dyes | Dr. Rebecca Bevans | TEDxCarsonCity

Dr. Rebecca Bevans is a professor and a researcher. She uses her PhD in cognitive neuroscience and her Master’s in child development to teach undergraduate and graduate psychology courses. Her passion for psychology is only rivaled by her passion for her family. When her son’s behavior became disruptive and problematic she used her knowledge and education to find the cause. Today she will be talking about her family’s difficult and emotional journey to finding answers and living dye free.
Rebecca Bevans received her Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience and a Master’s degree in Human Development from the University of Nevada, Reno. She is an expert in how physiological states can affect psychological perception. She teaches several undergraduate psychology courses at Western Nevada College including Child Psychology, Adolescent Psychology, Research Methods, Abnormal Psychology, and Introduction to Psychology. She also teaches graduate courses for Southern New Hampshire University. She is the President of Brain Matterz, a Nevada non-profit with the focus on brain disorder research and education. Her greatest position is being a wife and mother.

I am crying through this. There is a group that is intentionally trying to hurt us, makes us sick, and ultimately kill us. My son is going through this and I am going through the process of lifestyle changes to help him and my own self. Him and I are extra sensitive to it and my daughter isn’t. Certain genetics cause the extra sensitivity …but it isn’t good for ANY OF US. We need to wake up, unite, stand up and stop this!! It starts with us individually. We hold the responsibility to fight back and stop consuming and buying this stuff. Prays for everyone and may God help us.

The hardest part of being dye free is the social, every where we go people offer kids candy. My mother in-law verbally attacked me for telling great grandma no when she wanted to give my kid candy. Church they have candy for the kids, doctors have candy, stores, teachers use it as incentives to get good behaviors. Even school lunches have dye in them. And the second hardest thing is the cost. If financially you can’t afford the more expensive dye free alternatives then your out of luck. I have three children diagnosed with ADHD, autism type behaviors, my oldest has ODD middle child has IED. The youngest hasn’t been fully diagnosed due to his age. We have tried to be dye free and I minimize our exposure but it isn’t as easy as just reading the labels. We need to have our FDA actually do the job of protecting us. The research is there proving the many negative health impacts of artificial food dyes.

Im moving out of the country when I’m old enough lol. America is a scam and a lie. Unfortunately, the FDA does not care about our physical or mental health. They only care about taking money from people. No matter the cost. Don’t think that doesn’t include illnesses such as cancer. They make money off of lying to people and making them dependent on the government so to keep an endless supply of money. Cancer already had a cure. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. The majority of big company/ corporate doctors, professionals, etc will tell you that’s not true. The FDA knows that there is a cure and go to many, often extreme lengths, to hide this from the public.

@@Dr.Bevans Definitely when my autistic daughter gets more than just tiny amounts of red dye she goes beserk for 2 days. McDonald's and Chinese restaurants invariably cause problems but Chick-fil-A and Zaxby's"s is tolerated. Just eating from scratch home cooked food is the only safe thing for us to do. I think not only certain dyes but also certain preservatives are a problem. Anyone with children who have behavioral issues should try a period of at least a couple weeks of basic preservative and dye free cooking and see what happens.

@@ilTHfeaa how do you know…? Do you have studies stating so? Why have these dyes been banned from foods in other countries? I’m not one to just dive in to any “latest & greatest” theory about this sort of stuff- fad diets, ‘A’ is bad for you, no wait- ‘A’ is good for you, etc. But until these claims are _disproven_ I don’t think it could hurt to consider them as a potential source of problems. Esp in kids. Most big U.S. companies do a fantastic job at marketing their products towards a specific audience, and kids are a big audience. It has been proven that many companies will go to great lengths to promote their products- whether they are healthy or not. I don’t see why they wouldn’t use these food dyes as another selling tactic. It’s not past the point of belief, unfortunately. Either way- it needs more research. More studies. I don’t think it should be discounted so quickly. There must be a reason why other countries have banned such dyes in their food/products.

We went steps beyond artificial food dyes and removed all petroleum-based artificial from our home. This included scents, flavorings and preservatives. Because many of these chemicals are not listed on food labels, we relied on research by an organization called Feingold Diet. It made a huge impact on our son’s behavior but the timeline was different. At two weeks, the behaviors intensified. But at three weeks, the behaviors-complete lack of focus, distractibility, intense moods, anger, couldn’t sit for more than a few seconds-were gone or extremely lessened. The difference was shocking and a huge relief. If removing dyes isn’t helping, perhaps a look at a more comprehensive protocol is warranted.

It was not easy, but I saw DRAMATIC differences like those Dr Bevans described based on whether the kids kept up their regimen or not. As older teens, it becomes their own responsibility.

Yes! But getting people to realize that synthetic food dyes cause reactions is the tough part. More people need to know that food dyes can be the reason their child is reacting.

Don't tell me it's not so hard. If you're a family that also has other allergies, and/or are below poverty level, it can be impossible to find alternatives, that are safe. I still can't find a hand soap that's safe for all of us, I'm allergic to coconut, and treenuts, and my husband is allergic to grain, and my dairy is allergic to milk and my son has a similar anaphylaxis reaction to red dye, so this IS difficult. It's not as easy as reading just labels

I homeschooled my boys, K through 12. My youngest acted as if he had ADHD. I researched foods that would help. I never thought about food dyes, but now looking back, the foods we removed had food dyes in them. The foods we fed him, and got results with, had minimal or no food dyes. It helped considerably with his behavior. When he went into college, his behavior went back to ADHD symptoms. He went to a doctor who put him on medication. I've had a buzz in my head for so long that I thought it might be due to tinnitus. But now, I think it may have to do with food dyes. Thank you for this info.

Here it is a pale yellow and I have noticed how deep the yellow is of your product over there. My first thought was, "My goodness, how much colouring is in that?" And I still think the same thing and wonder why so much is added.

We are cattle to these people. Repeat/return customers to the medical / pharma/ food corp. we are being poisoned and ultimately killed with the “treatments” they give us. God gave us what we need to be healthy and stay healthy. They don’t want people to wake up and realize this…. It would be OVER for them. Keep fighting, get in a serious relationship with God and let the Holy Spirit guide us in this difficult dramatic lifestyle change we have become so accustomed to as normal. Man, our family knows this. This is our son. SO MUCH OF IT. For years we have gone through all this. We have removed artificial dyes from everything - toothpaste, mouthwash, foods, treats, candy, soaps, baking, ice pops, other processed foods. Thank goodness there are natural dye and dye free options for nearly everything now - shaved ice syrups, sprinkles, baking dyes, toothpaste, medications, etc. I know him well enough where I know he has ingested something at school or something we didn't know had dye in it. One night he was screaming all night, throwing things, backing himself into a corner like an animal. He knocked over my fan and looked at me like he looked right through me. I just knew he had dye. I can tell from his behavior. I couldn’t quite figure out from where though because we have removed it from all of the items in our home. Well, eventually I went and looked up the restaurant we had ordered Chinese food from and sure enough - yellow #5 in the noodles! I freaking knew it. It's not normal age appropriate tantrums or emotional dysregulation.... it takes over his body. He will walk around in circles, move his jaw in a weird manner. We had taken classes on parenting and expected age appropriate behaviors and emotions, but this is *different*. It's like he is on a drug. Over the years we looked at all things it could be - sleep, TV/screens, other stimulation, school, etc. The only thing that made a difference is the artificial food dye. I have a master’s as a clinical nurse specialist and in that role my main job is to make evidence-based changes in our healthcare system, so I understand the importance of research backed decisions. That said - there are a number of studies that do show a correlation between artificial food dyes and behavior. There is enough evidence that EU countries make any food company that have artificial dyes put a warning label on their food. The ONLY reason food dyes even exist in any anything is purely for marketing and looks. Thankfully, there are many companies that now offer dye free or natural dye options of everything from toothpaste, candy, flavored syrups, mouthwash, medicines, coloring for baking, sprinkles, and more. Reason for that - many parents are noticing differences in their children’s behavior. I am one of them. I’ve seen this with my own son. For several years we’ve been able to understand his sensitivity to these artificial dyes. During periods of time when we remove the dyes and are very careful at what he ingests he is a normal 5 year old. Sure, he has times where he is sad or mad, but without dye we can work through those times with normal understanding of children’s development and he responds appropriately. Ultimately, only parents truly know their children that well. If it doesn’t impact your family - great. Be thankful. I have only met more and more families like mine though that have a child who is completely out of control when they have the dyes.

If she has a PhD and is a psychologist she should be conducting controlled studies to prove her suspicions.. that’s how change happens, with evidence. While I agree her argument probably has merit and there might be something going on with food dyes, I also know that the answer to everyone’s child’s behavioral problems is not cutting food dye consumption. As an educated person she should know this is a dangerous way of making her case. It’s similar to the “correlation” “found” between vaccines and autism. I grew up with this kid with severe behavior issues, his mom had some epiphany that sugar was the ultimate cause of all of his issues. She was completely convinced of it, and swore by the results. This was about 15 years ago. The kid never got the proper professional treatment he needed and sure enough he’s a complete wreck now, with debilitating anxiety, depression, and an extremely late autism diagnoses. These kinds of things need a proper scientific approach to avoid any concerned parents jumping to conclusions and overlooking something crucial to their child’s healthy development.

While one can extrapolate useful information from Dr. Bevans Talk; it's important to consider bias and the anecdotal nature being described. It's very clear she cares about her child and is a loving mother, but micromanagement, lack of exercise, and other things can also lead to behaviour/mood changes. Just the normal-every-day-experience of being a living, growing human can result in behaviour/mood changes. The suggestion near the end that parents test and observe their children's responses to foods and make decisions based on those observations is not only NOT scientific, but potentially dangerous. Also suggesting that "natural" food dyes is perfectly safe is also potentially dangerous. Unfortunately life is not as simple as one thing causes another. For example, she mentioned the green tea ice cream and blamed the food dye, but did not control for the caffeine or sugar in the ice cream that could also have produced those effects.

I said same thing. When my son eats anything with artificial dyes he gets so violent and punches walls and calls me awful names. It’s horrible. I don’t know what to do to make him stop. He’s 19 now and his addiction is so bad.

Contribute? Sure, possibly. Cause? Absolutely not. Too many variables at play, doesn't apply logically

I had issues like this as a kid, but for me it was easier to tell because I have a severe allergy to all food dyes. It causes anaphylaxis for me. Even if an amount is small enough to not trigger the anaphylaxis, it would effect me emotionally. It turned me into a different person

I am sorry to hear that. I really wish no one was allergic to dyes. It is devastating to watch people suffer.

Thank you! This message is crucially important!! I have an anaphylactic reaction to Red 40 where my tongue swells out of my mouth, my throat swells, my eyeballs swell and my sinuses swell. I have a scar on my retina from one of the swelling episodes. The other Red dyes like 5 and 28 can cause problems too. It took the doctors 4 months to figure out that it was Red dyes.

Shot in the dark but perhaps when you removed all those foods with dyes aka food with high sugar/caffeine and trans fats kinda had those withdrawals. It’s fact that sugar and soda with caffeine behave like drugs. Weight gain is also common with a whole food diet especially if it’s high in starch. Also maybe your child developed a placebo affect with the dyes????

Thank you for your comment. Through this porcess, we investigated all that you mentioned. He still drinks caffeine and sodas with no reactions (ruling out the sugar and caffeine hypothesis). He has reactions when ingesting artificial dyes when he had no idea that he ingested them (ruling out the placebo effect). He did not shift to a whole food diet, but to an artificial dye free diet. There is a different. We only removed candies with dyes, but other candies were fine. Same with the processed foods, sodas, etc. I am a researcher and took into consideration every possible variable. We held as many as we could constant so that we could rule out any other confounds. We found he is also reactive to TBHQ and not reactive to BHT and BHA. Since this started six years ago, we have had several accidental dosings along the way, including one that was unexplained until we looked at the bottle of sunblock. We have concluded that his reaction are to artificial dyes. I have also spoken to many families over the years that have found their children to be reactive to artificial dyes. As crazy as it sounds, artificial dyes cause reactions in some children. Period.

Some effects of additives can cause effects years later because they accumulate in the body. I like to look at the Food Additives app when shopping to see if something is harmful.

it is your health take it personally. You ventured to tell your sons story it was informative and concise on what his system should not intake. DYES do have an impact on the anatomical systems. Health and wellness must be vigilant in disclosing nutritional values and toxic dyes. READ the labels. Thank you for full disclosure.

it's definitely not a sugar rush, I had a really bad bad case of psychotic episodes/panic attacks even when on a ketogenic diet. it was azo dye, and they also cause inflammation. I also really want to know her thoughts on caramel colors like ammonia caramel, sulfite ammonia caramel, etc.

Thank you for your comment. Sugar rushes are very different. Psychosis is not a sugar rush. I am sorry you went through that. Some children grow out of the reaction but that is only about 50% of those kids. That leaves about 50% who grow up into adults who still react. My thoughts on caramel color? They are not good for you, but they are not a petroleum byproduct. They may not cause reactions that are similar to dyes. Azo dyes are the most intense. I spoke with a food scientist and she explained why and I do not think I can type the explanation as it is long. Just know that they research and my anecdotal experiences are in alignment. Sadly, not enough research has been conducted so all I have is our stories and countless others. Now, TBHQ, BHT and BHA also can cause reactions in those who are artificial dye reactive. Look out for those. Good luck and than you for watching my talk and leaving a comment. I appreciate you taking the time.
