Live From 2024 National Team Camp

* UPDATE
We have edited our discussion of Jordan's floor routine story, not Jordan's quote. Why did we do this? Because there were too many misinterpretations of our discussion online. We have heard from USAG that staff are receiving threats. We find this abhorrent! To be crystal clear: The input Jordan received was not from a person within USAG, which we have confirmed. Jordan said “it wasn’t USA” and “not…USAG”.
USAG informed us they first learned of the suggested routine change when we shared the clip on the podcast.
In our commentary following Jordan’s statements, we were not trying to blame anyone indirectly involved. We were attempting to highlight the lessons from the BLM movement.
Jordan is very excited about her new routine and we have no doubt she will bring all of herself into the routine when it’s performed.
We will share more thoughts on our shows Friday and Monday.

So they are not 2nd place but stars in their own right and celebrate each and every one of them.

MyKayla was denied numerous 10.0 routines in her 3 years at Utah. As an Utah fan of over 40 years, I felt the judges were extremely hard on her, possibly based on her flexibility, such as split leaps. Everything else was just top notch and our fans just loved watching her. Plus most gymnasts don’t normally get 5 yrs to accumulate 10.0 scores. It’s a valid question she raised.

I understand why Jordon would want to pick her own music. But I have to say, when I watch some girls at like Worlds, and their music is not really appropriate or lacks electricity, I loose interest and believe they don't score well. So, if I had worked thousands of hours to have the privilege to make it to Worlds or Olympics, I'd want to put a floor routine together that would score the highest as possible. They are more likely to send a girl to the Olympics if her floor outshines everyone - like Laurie Hernandez's floor. I knew early on she was going to end up doing floor in the Olympics. The floor routine, music, dance, showmanship was far superior than most of them. If I saw Derrian Gobourne's 2023 floor routine at Worlds I WOULD LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! But her choreography was electric, unique, fun, and audience grabbing, AND SHE CAN REALLY SHOW IT OFF. If you can't dance, or it has poor choreography, then I'd listen to other's advice.

@@bgreen5234 Are you talking about a specific piece of music, let me know. My comment was in general. Example, at the Ice Skating Olympics, having silly music would not go over well in a competition like that. I think Jordon's college music was great!!! and she danced it well. The dance was very adult and appropriate for college. If I saw a 14 year old trying to do that same routine at a World's competition, I doubt she would score well....even if she could pull off the dance and self expression. You have to also remember the judges tend to be old school, have certain expectations, and the coaches know this. I'm just saying it would be good to listen to your coaches, even though you may wish to dance a certain style. I'm not bashing any style, just pointing out the current view points.

In fact, I only know a handful of country artists, so is it fair for me to say that Country music is unartistic? That’s a bold generalization. You’ve attached a stigma to that style of music, but to say you can only see a 14 Year old perform that routine is extremely offensive and narrow minded. Music is music…

And I'm not bashing the individual gymnast. I'm saying that there are a lot of times when I see floor music being done by someone who can't dance, or the choreography is seriously poor, and or the music is inappropriate for the event or age of the gymnast. I never said any music is unartistic - the music itself is artistic by the very fact that it is music. You totally missed my point. Good luck.

Show them that whatever they throw at you, you will be and remain successful. This is what Champions do, they feed from the negative and turn it into the BEST.

As a former black gymnast we have dealt with these things since forever in the sport. This is just wrong, Jordans floor was a reflection of her personality and the judges in 2022 worlds judges had no issues with her floor and Gabby's new double layout on floor looks amazing

It's possible to grab the beam and only get 3 tenths off. If it was something like Sazonenkova in 91 when she'd do the aerial and immediately bend at the waste and grab the beam in a needle scale kind of situation, there would be no real deduction. It always looked like she was trying to save the skill, but I don't think it was that cut and dry.

I understand what you are asking, but no, that is not possible,” and then you hold these heads accountable to do all they can to support that athlete and that decision.

I’m sorry but I disagree with the commentators here. If Jordan was only competing in the USA then she has every right to be offended. But with international judges who we know can be very subjective then what’s wrong with telling her the truth? Artistry category is subjective af. It would be hard for usa to claim racism after the fact - if she is hypothetically downgraded for it. And yes I am a black woman and I questioned in the back of my head how would Jordan’s music be judged on the international stage. Racism is real throughout the world. It’s one reason a lot of black people stay away from giving our kids black sounding names- we know Tyrone and Keisha are less likely to get callbacks for job interviews vs a Michael or Stephanie. It is what it is. Why blame the messenger?

I was thinking similarly but more along the lines of these gymnasts are here to make the best score possible for the team. If they know that something is not going to be perceived well in whatever meet or judging situation they're in then changing it for the team seems reasonable. I am not an expert on what types of music have been used in the past so if this isn't consistent then that's a different thing. I have enjoyed in the college routines some of the new music choices this year. I think because I grew up in the 90s.

The Artistry deduction is not that subjective actually. The deductions are as followed (all are 0.1, or I mention it's different) - poor body posture (basically me as the gymnast is hunched all the time, shoulders up, head down,...) - insufficient amplitude (I always explain it as watch a dancer do a run through of a routine and compare it to their final performance. They will usually go 30-50% in execution of movements. That's what this deduction is) - poor foot work (feet are not pointed, flexed or relaxed through out the whole routine) - insufficient involvement of all body parts (they want to see the gymnast include movements of every part of the body, arms, legs, head, not just waving the arms in different ways...) - poor expressive engagement according to the style of the music (for example the gymnast looks really bored/has a blank face all the time or looks too concentrated to do the choreography, instead of enjoying the moment, if that makes sense. Hard to describe this one honestly. Only gymnast I could really think of in pro gymnastics is jade Carey, but usually it doesn't happen in elite. It's mainly an issue with younger gymnasts in regional competitions, where they just go through the routine. If you see this deduction, you know it) [0.1 or 0.3 deduction is possible here)] -performance of the entire exercise as a series of disconnected elements and movements (lack of fluency) - insufficient complexity or creativity of movements 1. Throughout the routine (for example gymnast just uses arm movements) 2. In corner, lack of variety (gymnast just turns in the corner or does the same choreography to avoid this) - missing movement touching floor (self explanatory?) - no structure to the music (no opening, ending or accents...) - lack of synchronization between movement and musical beat at the end of the routine - background music (the music just doesn't seem to connect to the routine. Again, hard to explain, but if you see it, you know. Basically after those routines you think, any music could have played in that moment, because there was no connection to the choreography) [0.1 or 0.3 deduction possible) If I didn't miss one, this should come up to a maximum of 1.8. If any fellow judge sees this differently, this is how I was taught. I'm a national judge

@@xxheart_breakerxx8732 thank you for this explanation. But if these rules aren’t applied fairly or equally then it becomes subjective. I’m 51 years old, been watching gymnastics since the mary Lou retton years and I’ve seen certain gymnasts being overscored because of artistry and other gymnasts primarily black gymnasts who are told they are not artistic because of their body habitus or lack of “dance”. (No one will convince me Dominique Dawes deserved silver behind that Russian gymnast) Many are told they look manly compared to the European and Asian gymnasts. You can claim these things aren’t subjective, but I think I’ll believe my lying eyes this time.

Jordan has a right to feel the music being taken away was racist, but black culture and what is racist isn't decided by white Jessica, so she needs to stop telling people how they should feel on a subject she knows nothing about. Racism happens to all nationalities, but she doesn't speak for black people on the subject and needs to understand SHE was the racist one in this video. The Lyrics in some of these songs Jordan chose are offensive to even us black people. " And she also doesn't get to tell a Black person what black lives matter means to us. Gabby didn't earn her spot by scores. That is a lie. At Nationals she was beaten by 4 AA gymnasts, any of them could have been the third AAer by score. All 5 of them would have been the third US gymnast at the Olympics, and served the same purpose. She did well at the Olympics but she didn't earn the spot. The spot she served was UB specialist. That was the only event she did at Worlds in team finals or EF because everyone beat her on Vault, Beam, and Floor to make EF. If there was a bar specialist it should have been Ashton Locklear, but she's a porn star so we don't care about her anymore. Kocian could have done the All-Around in prelims and served the same purpose and the US could have added anyone who fairly beat. Skinner could have made the vault Finals. Ragan, beam. etc.. and they all earned it ahead of Gabby by beating her when it mattered. At trials.

Real fans know this. Gabby over achieved at the Olympics but she didn't perform that way AT Trials. Which is the issue.

I am so sick of the narrative that has gone on for all these years about Gabby not deserving to be on the 2016 Olympic team. It is really sad how badly she was treated. 1)Why was NO ONE complaining about Madison Kocian being undeserving of a spot on the 2016 team? She finished 8th behind Gabby in the AA at the trials, yet never got the disrespect Gabby received when she was picked to jump all those AA gymnasts ahead of her to be put on the team. And I believe Madison belonged on the final team. But she was no where near Gabby's overall credentials going into the trials. Gabby was the reigning AA world's silver medalist and AA olympic gold medalist at the time of the trials. 2)The insane cyber bullying Gabby received going into the 2016 Olympics was simply heartbreaking. And it was mostly by gymnasts in the US that just had other favorites they wanted to see in the Olympics and were disappointed they didn't make it. 3)ABSOLUTELY no one seems to mention that Gabby finished THIRD in the AA at the 2016 Olympic qualifications. Behind Simone and Aly, and that was under all the hate she was receiving she managed to perform better than any other countries AA qualifiers by more than 1 point. She did an amazing job in spite of knowing a lot of people from her own country thought she did not deserve to be there. So, I for one, am so happy to see Gabby returning to the sport. She is a beautiful, history making gymnast that I hope whether she makes this 2024 Olympic team or not, gets the respect and appreciation she so deserves for the contributions she has made to the sport of gymnastics.

@@gymstyle5091 Did she over achieve at the 2015 worlds when she won the AA silver medal behind Simone's gold? At some point you should respect her gymnastics as more then just a fluke or over achievement.

Can you guys stop saying “the vault” when you’re referring to the apparatus (i.e the vaulting table); vaulting is the verb
