    Jordan's 90's floor routine was the routine I did not know I needed, but it gave me life! Why should it have been a problem internationally? Camelia Voinea was literally breakdancing in her floor in the 80's, and breakdancing is street dance originated by African Americans. That routine is pretty much legendary. Let gymnasts be their authentic selves!

    When I first started watching gymnastics, the floor music was a live pianist! And it was all classical music!😂 Then, recorded classical music. By tge 80's, the Olympic committee allowed more contemporary tunes, but no vocals. I'm sure I will tick some people off, and you'll think I'm just old, but I dislike the sexualization of the artistic component that is prevalent in college gymnastics floor routines. I don't want to see it in international competition, either, but I realize today's gymnasts are NOT children any more. They are young women. Thanks to people like Dominique Dawes, more and more black girls have decided to do gymnastics and are exceptional BECAUSE OF their bodies and strength. You have to have the muscles to propel you higher and farther. Scrawny gymnasts are NOT better gymnasts, and our current crop of gymnasts are proof of that. It's exciting! All that said, as long as a floor routine isn't overly sexual and the music lyrics questionable, I think there's nothing wrong with the routine hilighting the gymnast's culture. It should be judged on the same level as all others.

    She's talented and does a great floor routine for sure, but college gymnastics floor routines don't fit in elite at the international level. Maybe that will change over time, but I think it's reasonable to ask any gymnast to use different music/ artistry - if they're going to represent USAG, then USAG should have the right to 'demand' certain changes that they know - rightly or wrongly - will score better. It's far better and fairer to Jordan, do so now, than simply not choose her later on.

    @@anovemberstar I am going to disagree. I reviewed the deduction for artistry, and she meets the brief. The code does not say what artistry is, only that it needs to be expressed with elongated movement with amplitude; movement that involves all parts of the body, choreography that requires skill and preparation to perform; and expressive engagement during the choreography that _is in accordance with the style of music._ As for the idea that NCAA routines don't fit in at the elite level, I agree. They're better. If they re-made the Olympic elite rules with a strong influence from the NCAA rules and vibe(with a few tweaks), the ratings would go insane. There are a lot of elite routines that would actually fit really well in NCAA...like _all_ of Brazil and most of GBR and ITA.

  • @matthewhines9787

    @matthewhines9787

    @@anovemberstar I don't agree. I believe that, especially for an athlete like Jordan who thrives on being authentic and showing off, she is going to be a far bigger star and have far greater impact on that Olympic stage than if she does a routine that doesn't really feel or care about. She'll do her job, but she'd have a better chance if she was doing what made her feel the most confident. You can say that "maybe things will change eventually" but I would argue that the teams and individuals that prove over time to be the best are the ones who take chances push the status quo. Caslavska was the first top tier gymnast to do a non-classical routine. They said her "The Mexican Hat Dance" routine was trashy. It is now iconic and won her AA and floor gold. Zoya Grancharova using Twyla Tharp-esque choreography and experimental electro-synth disco in 1981 was considered bizarre and her music actually had to be reviewed by officials at Europeans to make sure it was legal to use. Using unusual modern music and dance in a big event was like 1/2 Janet Jones storyline in that 80's movie *American Anthem.* Stella Umeh put tribal music and dance in the spotlight and though I think she should've had more medals, that had more to do with the flag on her leo. There are always going to be gymnasts who push boundaries and given the fact that she has the resume and the receipts as a FX gymnast, she can do her Salt 'N Pepa/Missy Elliot dream and the judge's will have to give her the scores.

    Why is this olympics already so much about race? I have seen multiple times them mention of "all black team". Why can't the focus not be on race but on just the talent. In 2024 race should not be the dominate part of the conversation still but seems like we are reverting back to almost even old ways of separating black gymnasts versus white. I understand feeling representation and sense of belonging but this is going beyond that by pinpointing this so hard. I recognize politics are still very much in play in gymnastics and maybe that's the point she is trying to make but from a PR standpoint making waves an olympic year may not have been her best choice if she ultimately bowed down and changed her music and routine and then still wanted to bring it up. I like her motto but because of the politics and the want to conform to make the olympic team it's going to be hard to keep that throughout the season but I wish her all the best. Yes, she should have nothing to prove but i'm not sure that works when you have so many talented athletes vying for such limited coveted spots.

    @@alannabrown4 I just want to mention that race is brought up for non black but also non white gymnasts. There was all sorts of coverage about Suni being the first Hmong gymnast to reach her level and get chosen. When Shawn Johnson was competing in Bejing all they ever talked about was how her coach was Chinese. As much as we may want the world and narrative to be better we have to still live in the reality of how this world actually is.

    It's already so much about race because it's a real issue. Instead of whining, complaining, and being offended why not think of something that you can do to help instead? These young women don't want it to be about race either. She is only sharing the truth as a response to a question. The reporter probably already knew the answer before she asked the question. This is her reality, even if it makes you uncomfortable.

    I think the floor topic not only proves existing racism in the sport but also that artistry is so subjective. Usag pushed artistry for so long and Jordan brought it. But apparently, people see artistry so differently - which is kinda crappy for the athletes. How much more does the subjectiveness bleed out

    Zero coincidence once the Karoyli's left, gymnasts who are strong and muscular are selected- under their dictatorship they chose pre pubescent, malnourished, "tiny" gymnasts. Sure, they 'allowed' Simone to compete - and Gabby too, HOWEVER, Gabby in the past looked very underweight, nothing like the muscular gymnasts she is now - and no way would they have 'allowed' strong, muscular gymnasts like Jordan, despite their obvious talent. Of course, picking underweight "tiny" gymnasts meant African American gmnasts missed out.

    As a Black person can we please stop putting the burden of proof on Black bodies? Is it change that Black people are good at sports? Girl bye, it ain’t that deep, shocking, or surprising. I personally hate hearing this conversation about an all Black team, as if an African diaspora doesn’t exist and all Black teams don’t currently exist. I just want the best gymnast to win. You know what would have been surprising, USAG hiring Black people, so gymnast like Jordan won’t have to change their floor routine. Do you even believe a governing body with those views would even allow for an all Black team? Lol

    Also as a Black person no we are not good at all sports. I also don't know how old you are or how long you have followed gymnastics but it is major when you see diversity in certain sports. Especially sports that were made for certain "country club" types. Venus and Serena made a big splash because most people learned tennis at these places and they just didn't let POC in regardless of skill. You can almost say the same for Tiger Woods. Even when they let you in the training is not always the same. In 2008 my nephew was hyper and flipping everywhere at 6 years old was taken to a gymnastics gym. These classes are not cheap but his parents wanted him to have a productive outlet for his energy. They did not teach my nephew any real skills in almost 2 years being there. There was a group they just let play around and there was a group that was being really taught. He wasn't able to move up the levels at all. Then they got him a private coach on the side who was Black and taught him. When it was time to test the kid's skills in the gym the coach said out loud how did you learn that??! That was the last straw and they took him out of that gym but by then the damage was done. He didn't like gymnastics anymore even though the other coach said he was good. He moved to track and is now doing well but this behavior pushes out a lot more than we realize.

    @@itsjustjess1 Yes, there are pillar of objections to certain sports but it’s not surprising that Black people will do well athletically. Historically both qualitatively and quantitatively sports records prove that, I don’t have to defend that comment. I go by what Wendy Williams says, we know Black folks are good at sports and music it is time to explore other means. Our bodies have nothing to prove wether the history of the sport being predominantly white or not, and I don’t think we should be surprised that Black people can excel at a sport. That’s my opinion that’s my belief based off statistics, if you disagree fine. Your anecdote about your nephew is not unique to his race, we hear that sort of treatment from all types of gymnasts all the time, bad coaches exist in all sports, find a new one. Not to gag you but the first sport to have a Black association was in fact tennis, while not a significant amount of Black tennis players we have had much success in the sport prior to Venus and Serena. Lacoste created a whole brand from the sport. Next time please list Althea Gibson instead, she was truly ground breaking, about 50 years before Venus and Serena were even born. But again our bodies have nothing to prove. Golf and golf resorts….well, I don’t follow the sport, which is more of the problem. Black people don’t like golf largely as much as other sports or find it engaging, but I do know there are several programs and organizations trying to promote and create more opportunities for Black players. Finally , Tiger Woods never defined himself as being Black and that is very offensive to remove autonomy for a person to define themselves…..some would say that is racist. 🤷🏾‍♀️
