Welcome to MEM. New subscriber here. Not into SLP or linguistics, but as an air traffic controller, language and communication is very important. I went down this career path thanks to motivation from a part-time job that let me fly into Memphis 20+ times at midnight on purple and orange airplanes in my early 20s. That led me to an air traffic degree at a community college, hence finding your page thru the CC connection. Best of luck in your pursuits.

Hi Hailey! It’s been so awesome watching your academic journey. I have a question about grad school applications. Many times people say it’s not ideal to take Pass/No Pass classes in undergrad if they are part of your major. Since P/NP classes don’t affect your GPA, do grad schools look at them negatively? Secondly, if you were an Economics major (for example) and pursued an Econ degree in grad school, would it matter if you took a P/NP grade for an unrelated GE class? Would it be better to take a C+ instead of a pass?

Hi Lola! Sorry for the late response. I think for degree-related classes it's not ideal to take P/NP. For something unrelated it's probably not as big of a deal. However, I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker. I ended up taking some of my ASL classes (required for my degree) for P/NP bc I was really struggling and I still got accepted into multiple grad programs.

Hello Hailey, I just came across your video and it is super informative. My daughter has been accepted to U of M in the CDS program. Do you have any advice you could offer? Are you still enjoying your time in Memphis and at U of M? Anything you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello, sorry for the late response. She should have been contacted by a current student who can address her questions. If she accepts her offer of admission, she will be partnered with a 2nd year student in the program.

  • @bri.99

@@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege 1. What portion of your application do you believe carried the most weight in the selection process? 2. Was there an interview? 3. Were you able to work during your first semester? If so, how was that? Also, I'm a Memphis native, UofM grad, and I applied to the MSLP program November 2nd!

@@bri.99 Hi again! So sorry for the delayed response. 1. I'm really not well versed in the decisions process for SLP grad school so I don't want to speculate. I honestly haven't the first clue, but I would hope that since it is a comprehensive application, all application components were equally weighted. 2. The only school that I applied to that required an interview was CSU East Bay. UofM did not require an interview. But the UofM application did include a video submission. 3. I am working as a graduate assistant. I do not have a job outside of school. The assistantship and KZread are my only sources of income atm. Great to hear from another Tiger, hope everything works out for you!!
