What is the Difference Between IGETC and Pre-Major Coursework?

This is a video for all the CC newbies out there who are getting started with the transfer process. IGETC stands for Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum, and is equivalent to the first 2 years of study at a 4 year university. These classes are required for everybody. Completing IGETC is a seamless pathway to transfer to a UC school for most majors. Some exceptions include STEM and Arts majors. Pre-major coursework/major prerequisites are the classes directly related to your major. Theses courses are specialized and NOT required for everybody. They are meant to prepare you for the specific major you have chosen and must be taken in order to advance within the major (i.e. enroll in upper division courses).

I know it isn’t really related to this video but it’s one of your more recent ones and I had a question! Where/how did you complete prerequisites needed for grad school that weren’t offered in your linguistics major? I wanted to transfer to UCSB for their linguistics major with a concentration in speech hearing sciences but it doesn’t have a lot of the prerequisites for slp school such as anatomy/physio of speech mechanism or hearing disorders. Did you complete a post baccalaureate program for those courses? Or is there options to take them while in the slp programs? I know that’s a lot to answer and ofc you don’t know everything but please share what you know with me!! You’re someone who went through exactly what I am right now I’m so shocked to find you and all your vids they’ve been such a help!

The grad school I am enrolled in accepts both students with CSD background and without, so my degree program has the prereqs built into it. Not every school does, but you can find those that do using ASHA EdFind. A lot of people complete post baccs, so that is always an option as well. I didn't personally go that route because they are usually expensive and there's no guarantee that all the courses will be accepted by the grad program you end up in.

What is your opinion on the linguistic and computer science major at UCLA( is it worth it and is it useful to get a good job)?

Hi Itzel, I did not major in Ling & C.S., so I can't really speak about the major but it is quite popular at UCLA. I would urge you to remember that there is more to getting a job than the major that you choose. It's probably highly dependent on each individual employer.

Hey Hailey, can I ask a question? As an student needing a visa to study after getting transferred, is the pre-major an official university acceptance? I have two courses that couldn't be found in any community college, and I need to finish that during the first quarter at a UC, I was just worried if I'm gonna need to explain to the people at the Visa office about my "half-acceptance" and that doesn't look good. Does your UCLA offer say it's a pre-major acceptance only(and that you have to finish xxxxx to get officially accepted?).

Also(sorry for so many questions), would you recommend to prioratize IGETC or pre-major courses? Becuse I have limited time, and I have very few overlaps between the two, but I want to show my passion on my major (Business).I researched about the IGETC certificate? If I finish IGETC prior to applying, would you say the IGETC certificate would add highlights to my application although I don't have much credits from the particular business and statistics field?

@@DiMiLi9734 Hi, premajor acceptance is still full acceptance into the university. It just means that you are conditionally allowed to enter that major. Also, you ideally you will have both IGETC and premajor coursework completed, but if you must make a decision between the two then premajor coursework is more important because it is an indication of how you will perform in the major.

I plan on transferring next year for the fall 2023 semester as a biology major but I have not and plan not to complete organic chemistry in community college because that will delay me for another year. I have completed a lot of the lower division major requirements and plan on taking a few more to really strengthen my application but I am kind of worried that I will be having organic chemistry missing. Is there any downside to that on my application or will it be ok since it’s just one sequence missing? My top schools are UCLA, Berkeley and UCSD. I have a 3.8 GPA with everything almost finished except O chem.

Hi, sorry for the delayed response. If a class is required for your major and is available to you, then should definitely take it. How will taking the class delay you for another year? Is the class only offered once a year?

  • @gettingintocollege8857

It's not that UC Berkeley does not accept IGETC, but the campus administration and curriculum planners know that you have so many Physical Science, Math, and Engineering courses to take that it would be a poor use of time to have you take a bunch of general education courses. Some students have their transcripts IGETC certified when they graduate the community college, but that option would not be beneficial at Berkeley for Engineering or for Business.
