Life of a Woodsman - Honey Oat Cake and Coffee

Ойын-сауық

It's another beautiful day here in the wilderness. Having a breakfast that is both filling and enjoyable to eat is always a great way to start the day. This mornings breakfast of honey oat cake and coffee certainly meets that criteria.
Give this recipe a go! It's simple, easy to pack, and tastes amazing.
1/3 cup oats (I use large flake oats, quick oats also work well)
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
~1/4 cup water
~1 tablespoon honey (for topping...jam also tastes great)
Thoroughly mix dry ingredients first.
Add butter/margarine to the dry mix and stir in until the butter has broken down to form a dry crumbly mix.
Add water until a thick, sticky batter is formed.
Spoon batter into a greased pan and pat down with the spoon to form a 1/4"-1/2" thick cake.
Cook slowly over a low heat. Once the top of the oat cake begins to firm up, flip the oat cake and cook until a wood sliver will pass through without any batter sticking.
Spread with honey or desired topping before eating.
Makes enough for 2 filling breakfasts.
If you try this recipe let me know how it turns out! Thank you to everyone who watches.

Just wanted to let you know that I made these honey oat cakes on my most recent winter camping trip. Your recipe was easy to follow, and they turned out great. Eating the oat cakes with a nice hot cup of coffee and sitting by my fire in the sun was a perfect morning in the woods. Thanks!

I was told by a Brazilian coffee maker. This applies to freeze dried coffee beans, put cold water in your cup first, then add your coffee. Wait for the coffee to absorb the water then add the boiling water. When you add boiling water directly to your coffee it burns it, and this is where you get the bitter taste.

That recipe does sound good. Great for many situations. I bet it would bake nice in an oven as well. I really like your cup. When we were in the field in the Army they would make coffee that way in a huge pot. After it was done they would let it simmer all day then make another pot in the evening. We'd all dip out canteen cups in the pot. The best coffee. Great for breakfast and long over night shifts.

Great video for the series sir. I think everybody has their own formula for making camp coffee. Love the oat cake recipe and plan on giving it a try. I think the thing that makes it harder to cook well, it that unlike pancakes you don't get those little bubbles in the batter while it is cooking. Have to watch an oat cake more closely to keep it from burning, plus really grease the pan of coarse.

Thanks for tuning in! The oat cake can be tricky to keep from burning. If you're able to maintain a nice low heat and keep an eye on the oat cake it should turn out pretty good. It certainly is quite a treat to have around camp. Happy trails my friend!

Thanks. Looked like a nice challenge to try to cook this on a gentle enough wood fire. Will be nice to try. PS I think your pan is warped and not heating evenly. Easy to fix with a level and rubber mallet, or a regular hammer and a block of wood. Takes some patience, but once it's flat it will cook more evenly on that stove. PS it typically warps as a result of uneven heating when empty.

  • @KuskBushcraft

    @KuskBushcraft

    5 ай бұрын

Yes the pan is warped a bit. It was like that when I got it. It does heat unevenly when cooked on a flat surface such as my stove. It still works great over a bed of coals. I really should try flattening it out.. perhaps I'll find time over the holiday season to work on it. Thanks for watching!

Another very interesting and comfortable video to watch in your woodsman series 👍 the oatcake looks yummy and will be packed full of energy. Just one thing, the water you boiled had a yellowish tinge to it? It didn’t look safe to drink? The coffee making technique was interestng and I’ve never made coffee that way before I usually use a small cafeteria. Do you grind your beans or buy it ground? I’m going to try your coffee making method as I’m interested in the less bitter taste you mentioned. Great series, great videos. ❤
