Split Log Stove - One Log Fire For Camp & Trail Cooking
Ойын-сауық
After testing a wide variety of different one log stoves I came up with this simple design that serves as a great way to have a one log fire.
Three cuts with a saw and one split is all it takes. It can be made in just a few minutes, takes little effort and fuel to get burning, and is easy to maintain throughout the duration of it's use.
The heat can be controlled to provide a low or high heat which makes this one log fire perfect for cooking.
Many of the other variations of a one log stove that I tried (including the swedish torch and rocket stove) took too long to create and often required special tools. They were difficult to get burning, and once burning they let off an aggressive flame that is only useful for high-temperature cooking.
The split log stove is far more aimed towards being a useful cooking fire. It can replace gear in your pack like twig stoves or fuel stoves. It's simple, practical, and fun to make. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.
Thank you to everyone who watches.

That is brilliant, even easier than making a swedish fire torch and with more burn control
Found your channel through David West’s channel.
Outstanding design and implementation. I love the heat control and fuel conservation of this method.
I didn’t think that moving the logs apart would make much of a difference, but it clearly does. Such a cool idea, thanks for sharing 👍🏻

@@mikec.8556 well duh but its also not a bad way to cook
Your split log stove is a great idea. It works better than I thought it would. Watching you cook brought back a camping memory. Once I was cooking for several people and had a LARGE frying pan. As usual, I cooked the bacon first and beat about 6 eggs to scramble. The pan was still on the fire heating up the bacon grease. I poured the eggs into the grease and POOF! They cooked in an instant! I called them flash eggs and everyone ate them. No burnt edges or uncooked center. I have never been able to reproduce that event. God bless!
I envy those who can spend this much time in the woods. I like the woods.
I will definitely be trying this my next time to the woods. Super idea!! Well done thanks

Let me know how it works for you!
I've known your channel for over a year. Came from the log home in the Canadian wilderness videos. Glad you're still making content!
That was a great method. Never seen it done like that, very clever. Well done.
David West recommended your channel while demonstrating the split log fire. You offer great information that will be helpful on the other side of the pond here in SE Asia. We watched this video from our homebase and "secret retirement location" in Bulacan Province, on Luzon Island in the Republic of the Philippine Islands. Now, time to hit that subscribe button.
Love the video and will definitely give it a try. The only thing I’ll do differently, is cut the base from a larger diameter tree so the logs have more room to move around. Thank you!

Have fun! Thank you for watching.
A new take on the Swedish torch. Great idea! It provides control and fuel conservation that the Swedish torch doesn't allow.
Glad your back with more good outdoors tips. Keep em coming.
You CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Great video! I'm looking forward to trying this & seeing more of your videos.
This is the first time that I've seen like this. What I've always seen a lot are the Swedish Torch and rocket stove. Thanks Ryley for this one.
Great video!
As a fellow Canadian myself I can admit that this is a certified Canadian classic keep up the good work
This is a great idea for a makeshift stove when no other tools or accessories are available in the field. Brilliant idea, both inventive and creative! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Stars
this is science, mate. youve done the research for us. well done!
Years ago, I would have wondered why someone would bother going out into the woods to make breakfast. Now, I can't go anywhere without assessing an area for bushcraft camp worthiness. 🙂 My wife even got me fatwood as a Christmas gift last year. I like this split log idea. Will definitely use it. Thank you!
Not breaking the egg yolks when you flipped them with a wooden spatula impressed me the most!
Pretty good idea, worked really well on that breakfast. Thanks for sharing it with us. Stay safe. 🙏
Wow! I was a bit skeptical when I started watching, worried that it would be too easy for the log to fall over. I am impressed, it seems to work very well! Thanks for sharing.

The logs are rather sturdy when just split in half. It's when you quarter them to try and replicate a swedish torch that they tip over quite easily. Thanks for watching! Happy trails.
It's good to see you getting out more these days brother.
Great idea, so much easier that a Swedish torch
There are so many variations of the “Swedish Torch”/ stove that, it’s sorta tiring to watch the videos. This seems to be a huge simplification and improvement on the basic concept of a vertical standing log fire. I can’t wait to try this. 👍✌️
Greetings form Naples, Florida. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Have a wonderful week. 👍
That was very therapeutic to watch. I look forward to giving that a try myself. All the best.
Have you ever considered taking a very interested, quick learning, and outdoor loving subscriber with you? Hands on teaching and a different atmosphere for you, as you're usually alone? I'm sure I speak for many when I say that, a weekend trip with you would be a once in a lifetime. The skills and mentality you have to offer are amazing and I would love to have an experience like this. Especially so I can pass what I learn onto my 3 boys. Unfortunately, I'm not interested in a paid "experience" as it is not personal or authentic at all. That's why being able to go on an adventure with someone like you would be a once in a lifetime! If you ever think this is something you want to do, I'm volunteering to be first on the list! Great videos mate!
Whatever works, man.... gettin' it done.👍
Nice goin hunting next week I'll try it out
I can see where this could be beneficial in some situations, given that you have the right materials and tools to create it.
This was extremely interesting and helpful ! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Always great to watch your adventures instead of browsing Netflix for an hour! Entertaining and insightful as usual!
Great woodsman 👍👍👍
This is genius. Its so simple and effective, I slap my forehead and go why didnt I think of this? Thanks so much for sharing! game changer for me!!
Clearly the best method.
Cheers from the South Carolina Lowcountry
Greasy bacon and eggs. Not good for the heart, but damn good for the soul and belly. Brings back many camping memories from the 60’s. 🔥
2:18 - "One split is all we need" Sounds like a great bushcraft kumbaya song😜 Great vid thanks! 😃

That was a new, to me, take on the Swedish log. Much better with control of cooking. Brilliant.
this is cool as hell! thank you very much!
What a nice idea! On thish way you can adjust the fire! I'll try next time. Thanks!!!
I liked, subscribed and am leaving a comment. This was a grrrrreat video!
This is great, I look forward to trying it out myself!
Thanks for the split log stove tip.
Brilliant idea, man. God bless!
I learn something new! Thank-You!
I've never seen this before, but it's really cool and can definitely see the benefits
That was a great one. Looking forward to trying this on my next camping trip. I've been doing a lot of quick car camping trips his summer (due to how busy I am with work) - but I've been doing all my cooking over a fire. This will be a fun project.
So happy to see you sharing again. Your content really gives me ideas to do with the kids as a challenge and for something different than the norm thank you
Perfect, loved the vid. I appreciate everything about this video, especially the explanation of heat control and distribution. Thanks for the base tip also, i would never thought of it. Exactly these smaller tips make the difference.
Awesome and surprisingly effective cooking method. Thank you for sharing.
New Subscriber. Keep the videos coming
I want to say your video was vary neat, keep them coming!
Brilliant! Low to zero impact on nature. Absolutely love it! Thank you so much! Cheers...

Thankx, got sent over from David West ch
I like your idea very much! Thank you!
Thanks for being easy to follow.
Love the log stove.
You're a great teacher, thank you for these posts!
Would like to thank you for taking the time to make these videos I absolutely enjoy them. After watching the few I've seen I became a subscriber. I'm almost 70 and you take me back to my youth. I grew up on the side of a mountain and the forest was my back yard. I was also in the boy scouts we did overnight weekend winter camping. Along with hiking during the warmer temps, and did overnight camping on those weekends. Keep up the great things your doing with these videos. Your teaching all of us valuable skills one never knows they made need to use some day. God bless you young man and be safe out there in the wilds of western Canada. Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Law of thermodynamics. Heat moves to cold, always. Kusk is correct that the pan will evenly heat.
Campfire/Cowboy coffee is the best
I like video's like this where you actually learn something. This will try it this autumn is the Swiss mountains. Thank you for sharing!
I’ve never seen this method! And I must say I much prefer it . Thanks so much for sharing 👍🏼
thank you my friend look forward to it
a new adaption which works brilliant never seen that before that's one of the reasons I love your channel keep them coming big man 👍
Super cool, thanks for making the video
THank you for sharing your discovery on the split log fire. I thought the Swedish logs were the best way to conserve the energy and focus the heat but you showed a better way to control the heat.
Terrific idea, glad to see you back.
I really enjoyed this video.
I love these 'how to' type vids, thanks for another great idea! I made a single log stove recently out of a birch log, using a 2in hand drill to make a central hole and an airflow hole half way down. worked really well for boiling water.

I was thinking the same thing. Pretty much a wooden rocket stove.
WoW, very interesting. I now have to try it.
One of the better fire techniques that I've seen in a long time. Great video.
Really cool man.
Definitely trying this out this weekend when I go camping!
the forest is still pretty good...suitable for camping....with a small stream around it... Making a very smart fireplace log for camping needs in the middle of the forest...
I will surely be doing this on my next adventure! Love your videos and have learned so much! Thank you!
I absolutely love how you make perfect shots on the nature scenes. Along with the narration. I actually wanna go outside and make something like this. But.. i don't have wood tho.. :(
Happy to hear that alot more vedioes is coming ..lov fr India..👍

Another great video. Thanks for sharing. I will definitely try this out.
Great video, I'd never seen a log fire like this one. You usually only see the Swedish Torch fires.
