Learning the riffs of your favorite artists is a cool way to understand their style and how they think about the music they're making. Practicing those riffs brings us closer to their music and also helps us understand the technical requirements of their songs. For this video I transcribed three riffs from three very popular (and very awesome!) vocaliststs:
Riff one is taken from Beyoncé's song Drunk in Love
Riffs two is taken from Sam Smith's Lay Me Down
Riffs three is taken from Queen's Somebody to Love
The specific harmonization and rhythm is adjusted in order to facilitate using them as vocalization practices. Enjoy!!

Dear Jeff, Today i went to church and the visiting pastor said i had a beautiful blessed voice that i sang like a n angel. He was very happy and pleased with me. And my singing was great. I told him that i went to Berkley music school in Boston Massachusetts and then i went to new England conservatory in Boston Massachusetts. Both 5 years. Opera, and reading music and language arts in music to. I graduated from the schools. He said that today I sang with my soul. That's how i was taught to sing with my soul, up through my diaphragm and breathing to. Thankyou jeff your lessons are helping me quite a lot. And thankyou jesus amen hallelujah glory. I practice a lot with you Love and God bless you Susan morris from hyde park in Boston Massachusetts

I love these too. Just getting back into singing after a gap of years. Trying both alto and mezzo warm-ups. The riffs are great. You feel like you're singing and forget that they are exercises.

Sure! I will, however, have to do it in all fachs. Can't let the mezzos have all the fun! :-) (I might throw in an extra for you though - just don't tell the other fachs) Best, Jeff

Hey jeff! Is this a good one to do after the alto riffs? In regards to range I want to go a bit higher than the alto warmups usually go.

Hi quick question on the first part do we go into our head voice? Is just I don’t know when the switch comes. I do jump into mix voice. But I can’t any further.

In all my videos, unless they're marked specifically to be about belting, the idea is to make smooth transitions over your registration events, so yes, this would include using cricothyroid dominant singing voice (commonly called - head voice). As for tracking the switch, see if you can consistently find it in the same place on the piano while you're doing your vowel alignment exercises. That will be the way to find it in the most consistent location. Best! Jeff

Jeff, I am a soprano and I think I am weak and have no volume at the bottom of my range. If I do mezzo exercises will that help me build that up?
