Learning the riffs of your favorite artists is a cool way to understand their style and how they think about the music they're making. Practicing those riffs brings us closer to their music and also helps us understand the technical requirements of their songs. For this video I transcribed three riffs from three very popular (and very awesome!) vocaliststs:
Riff one is taken from Beyoncé's song Drunk in Love
Riffs two is taken from Sam Smith's Lay Me Down
Riffs three is taken from Queen's Somebody to Love
The specific harmonization and rhythm is adjusted in order to facilitate using them as vocalization practices. Enjoy!!

Why I have always passed this one by, I don't know, because as the meaning is given as "embellishments" and "ornamentation", I thought, YES, I'm all for those. I have missed out on something wonderful here, so thank you so much Jeff. And I find it brings out vibrato very well too, and also it's possible to make the runs even MORE ornamental. I'm a new fan of this one. LOVE IT!

Wonderful, Diane! I'm glad you decided to give it a try. If I remember correctly, the genres in this video aren't normally what you sing, but the agility still translates well enough! Thank you! Jeff

I find it easier to riff with the higher notes. Why would that be?

You're almost certainly using more breath energy in that range enhancing the balance of sub glottic air pressure and vocal fold engagement. Some amount of engagement abates lower down, but if you can stay abdominally engaged you may find that the riffs lower will work nearly as well. Jeff
