Singing Warm Up - How to Improve Your Tone - Mezzo Soprano Range

Balance Your Sound
SUBSCRIBE
kzread.info_cente...
Balancing your sound; the sound of your voice, when singing means that your vowels will align properly in your exercises and also your songs. If your vowels align in your songs you will be more easily understood when you sing but you'll also get greater flexibility and accuracy of pitch. In other words, riffing will be easier and you'll be able to sing in tune better.
The exercises in this video use short syllables to set up the vocal fold. Here's the catch though: the short breaths in the video will upset that setup, challenging you to be more accurate with your placement in order to get a well adducted sound. These exercises are some of the most efficient and effective ways I have found to balance a singer's tone. Presented here in moderate ranges for Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone voices for starters; these exercises are great for extending range too.
Enjoy!

This is exactly what I was looking for! EXCELLENT warmups and lessons. I've believed I was an alto with a good range for years, but have had to accept that I'm truly a mezzo with a thin tonal quality. These will help me open up my sound and range, as well as help strengthen my voice. Thank you!

Hi Jeff, you are a a teacher with a real rare skill. Thank you for what you do to every singer. I am traveling to London tomorrow, my course at ICMP is going to start on 17th. I pray God to find teachers as good as you. If you come to London to perform or for any other reason I would like to meet you so that I would receive some advices, and I really want to listen to you live. 👂☺️

I alternate between this, the sing over break and the high note sustain workouts 5-6 times a week. Started out struggling with tenor now im on to this one and alto for the other two after about 3 months. I and u are definitely the hardest vowels for me but im getting there, thanks for posting these workouts theyre literally life changing for me!

Nice workout! Keep it up and don't let /i/ or /u/ get you down. Keep your ears tuned in to their relationship to your other vowels and they'll align! Best, Jeff

I’ve been having lots of trouble singing the legato part smoothly and not accenting as the piano does; this is such a trap that I can’t seem to break out of and also happens when I sing written lyrics; anyone have tips ?

  • @JeffRolka

Great observation and question! You might start by doing the warm up without the vowel sounds and use the lip trill or whatever your favourite semi-occluded phonation exercise may happen to be. Work to keep the flow of air consistent and listen for that consistency in the phonation. As that becomes reliable, notice how you're using your core body muscles to sustain the flow of air through the various pitches. Try to remember that physical sensation and use it with the vowels in the exercise. It may take some practice, but that is one approach that I use regularly. Works just as well with lyrics, though the consonants and changing vowels make it more difficult. Best! Jeff
