"Learn something new every day!" - Nakamura takes on the Vishy Anand quiz!

Спорт

Hikaru Nakamura is a modern day player and works heavily with chess computers and engines. As far as our knowledge goes, he doesn't rely heavily on classical games like say Magnus Carlsen. It was interesting to see how he would fare in the Vishy Anand best games quiz. We selected 9 gems from the games of Vishy Anand and asked Naka to tell us about the names of Anand's opponents and also the best move in the position. "I do not know Anand's games so well", said Nakamura before the quiz began, but he still went ahead with it.
At the end of it, he wasn't the most proficient, but he said the golden words, which is sure to inspire any improving chess player = "Learn something new every day" said Naka! He had learnt something new and he was happy with it! No wonder he is one of the best players in the world as on today!

10:52 Bc4 was indeed the best move, actually, the only move wheres blacks better. Not only he wasnt able to see the move, hes also proud enough to say it isnt the best just to not look bad. Kinda tired of his unjustified cockyness.

That Anand vs Lautier game is really interesting. I guessed the same move as Nakamura. Anand found the best move with h6. However Bg6 requires super precise play from black to keep the advantage. And that's only a small advantage. If anyone is interested, it is fascinating. 20 Bg6 Qxd1 21. Rxe6+ Kf8 22. Ba3+ Ne7 23. Rxe7 Now white is threatening discovered check by moving rook and attacking black queen. 23 ...Qd4+ 24. Kxg2 hxg6 (note hxg6 is the only good move... all other moves lead to signifcant advantage for white) 25. Re4+ Kg8 26. Rxd4 Rxd4 27. hxg6 fxg6. So it's white rook+bishop vs black rook+rook. Pawns are equal but black has doubled pawns. Engine gives 1 pawn advantage to black.

Moves aren't given double exclams without a reason. Chances that you find the move, in such a short amount of time, without previously studying the game, are really low. It really just shows that he didn't bother studying 90's Vishy's games. His guesses are about the best anyone would come up with, when looking first time at the position.
