How difficult it is to calculate without a chess board. To visualize the position in the head and to then find the solution. 2702 rated GM Vidit Gujrathi was given four studies and one position from a normal game as a test by Sagar Shah. These five positions had to be solved in my head without a chess board or a computer 2D board.
How did he fare? Watch the video to find out. Along with solving the positions, Vidit also gives you some important tips on how to improve your visualization and blindfold calculation.

This is the guy that accepted a draw from Magnus Carlson when they were only a couple of moves in , Magnus had some sort of stomach trouble and was about to s*#t himself , Magnus quietly asked Vidit for a draw , Vidit saw how uncomfortable Magnus was and agreed looking somewhat bemused lol. What a good dude , i could see the likes of Nakamura and others taking advantage of the situation. Much respect Vidit , wish you the best of luck in the future mate , you're one hell of a talented Man. Edit....ok i just finished the video and freaking WOW , this should be impossible , i can't even comprehend how this is possible lol.

Most grandmasters can play a blind folded match. You end up studying so many games, that at one point, you have to develop the ability to read a position and imagine it... Just out of a need for convenience if not through habit or skill.

Sagar Shah, brilliant effort pulling out the Vidit-Svidler game while he was talking. you put a lot of effort into these. I really like them. Please keep making them with other grandmasters Harikrishna seems to have plateaued with his style around the world #20 ranking. But I think Vidit has it in him to break the World #10 barrier and be the next best Indian at chess. (Obviously not considering Anand because he has already proven his chess skills by being world #1 for a long time and comparison with him is moot)

Interesting question/point about younger players visualizing positions on a 2d board vs 3d. 99% of my chess has been played online and visualizing a position on a 3d board seems insane to me, but must be completely natural for older players.

If black plays ... Kxd4, then Bb6+ wins the black queen on g1. White is then simply winning because his f-pawn is queening. If instead ... Qxd4, then white plays Bf6+ and Bxd4. After ... Kxd4, white is winning again since his f-pawn is queening before black's a-pawn. Black has no king moves and if he doesn't take the rook, then Bf6 is mate.
