Leaks from Eritrea, Africa's North Korea

Eritrea is the most censored country in the world, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Sans Frontières. Often referred to as Africa's North Korea, the Eritrean government controls the flow of information with vigilance, restricting any dissenting voices from reaching the people.
As a result, Eritrean activists are forced to get creative. Through pirate radio, cold calls, messages on banknotes and posters put up in the dead of night, dissidents find ways to generate the only resistance they can.
VICE News follows members of the Eritrean diaspora community in Europe as they run radio stations, maintain online opposition sites and help to organize those still in Eritrea.

If you can answer for Eritrea or ask your friends I’d be curious. @@GotStones1 If you are asking what the quality of life is like to be in poverty in the U.S compared to impoverished countries like african or other countries I would say 7-8 out of 10, I grew up in poverty in america and have met many african or other immigrants that grew up in conditions 100x worse than me and my family, and my family was considered as low as you can get without being homeless, they aren't even comparable unless you're flat out homeless but even then in the U.S you still have massive benefits rather than being homeless in countries like these, like homeless shelters, readily available restaurants with good food safety if you're able to get money, and far more accessible recourses to get back on your feet and plenty more. People in poverty in the U.S often have all or at least some of these things, air conditioning, a car, heaters, internet access, jobs, education opportunities, and MANY more things you don't have in countries like these, obviously many don't have all of these things but vast majority have things that would be considered massive privileges in countries like these that aren't considered privileges in america at all.

Lots of people brush illegal economic migrants together with genuine refugees such as Eritreans because of ignorance, but know that the Netherlands sees itself as a harbor of refugees: through refugees we can exert political force to create democracy (it's easier for us because we are a newer, small country). Dutch racists, in this sense such, exert a necessary political force, such that the government will want to make national return possible for refugees, so don't take it personally: we want you to have a country that you can be proud just like us, wherever that may be, because if you like Holland, I can only consider that a compliment.

    My Eritrean friend told me that life in his country is pretty hard. People live on knife-edge. Your neighbor is your worse foe. If you mention a few words about injustice going around the country, your neighbor goes to the government and report you. Eritrea is a police state. Making a business without government consent is punishable by death, or life imprisonment. The government controls everything: media and economy and etc. There is no such thing as protest or demonstration. If you are a teacher, lecturer and doctor, your duty is to glorify the president. Talking about politics in school or university is completely illegal. Those who do so risk putting their lives in danger. There is a story of a lecturer who made a comment that " Eritrea needs to catch up with the rest of the world" One week after he made the comment, a group of soldiers came to university and dragged him away only not to be seen again. Nothing was heard of him since then. Till this day no one knows what happened to him.

    Your friend totally lied to you, I assume most of are educated, instead of here say,you need to check the UN country's profile and find out the good and the bad and then judge.As far as being anti-Pentecostal the government has rules about religions, everyone is entitled to worship in his church that is Coptics,Muslims,Chatolics,Lutherans,Pentacostal and so on,but they are not allowed to be roaming the streets and pandering for new followers and upsetting the other churches/mosques which in turn it would create bad sentiments and lethal confrontations,which is a common occurrence in Africa,theMiddle East, and Asia, were many have been killed in the past, when it comes to religion there is no civility, and it is kind of fire hard to put out and the government of Eritrea knows it well.

    General question: How well do sanctions actually work on isolationist/tyrannical dictatorships? Cuz looking at this country and North Korea, it doesn’t seem to be doing anything.

  • @shlomoshlomo963

    @shlomoshlomo963

    2 жыл бұрын

    It is actually doing things, cuz if there were no sanctions they were more likely to trade with other countries. Tho it is not that effective when the second largest economy and the world largest manufacturer (China) still do business with it and still north korea have food shortages and power shortages the problem is that it's hurt the civilians the most (which can lead to revolution/resistance/terrorists)

  • @bronteboy89

    @bronteboy89

    2 жыл бұрын

    In theory they are effective but in reality the real impact is just felt by the standard civilian and the sanctions end up leading to even worse conditions for the avg person. Since theoretically with heavy sanctions it means less foreign goods would be traded in and out of the country to force the govt to make changes, but in a country like the DPRK or Eritrea the govt can just continue to take more from its citizens to maintain their high standard of living. Sanctions are basically just a front for politicians in the west to say they’re actually doing something to help but the sanctions don’t really have an effect on the actual dictator/autocrat, they have more of an effect on the country as a whole.

The odd thing is there is nothing in it for the oppressors, besides survival and not getting killed. The capital city had no clean water and very little electricity. And the food had low density of nutrition. Even as an Eritrean who opposes the dictatorship, i've to say this is real propaganda. They're not wrong with some main points, but the image they show from the country is totally over exaggerated one sided. The fact that's the behaviour of the different Ethiopias dictatorships in the first place, which gave the dictatorship in Eritrea the chance to act like it's doing it, is hidden behind an image of a peace caring Ethiopia, which is apparently to soft to Eritrea. No mention of different attacks in the last 15 years from Ethiopia against Eritrea, which was always a special present for the propaganda of Eritreas dictatorship, in order to justify the national service, the press restriction etc. The question has to be asked, why the world never tried to force Ethiopia for a change in the behaviour towards Eritrea ( like it's happened recently per coincidence, when Ethiopias new dictator Achmed just followed universal laws about accepting the existence of a neighbouring state ), in order to embarrass and disclose the natural unwill of Eritreas regime for giving their population individual freedom.

    Most likely sent by a relative. Eritrea doesn't allow NGOs, or other charities to operate in the country. The UN has an office there but is forced to conform to the governments self reliance policy. One of the main reasons it has such a big army and mobilizes its entire population is to do the work often relegated to NGOs/MNCs in Africa.
