Escaping Rape and Murder in Ethiopia's Civil War

One year after fighting erupted in northern Ethiopia the horrors of war still haunt refugees living in eastern Sudan. Julia Steers met with survivors of the Tigray War in refugee camps to see how what started as a political feud has become a prolonged ethnic conflict.

I'm Tigrayan and i found this very sad, a lot of Tigrayans / Ethiopians / Eritreans that don't support any political parties like HGDEF, TPLF or ENDF are dying in this mademan war /genocide , and a lot of evil people are taking advantage of this situation and making it worst. God help all innocents trapped in war , from north to south, and may all lost souls RIP. This is too sad.

An eye for an eye? It’s literally a war of survival. The Tigray region launched. A surprise attack after being voted out democratically and executed all non-tigrayan captives. Doctors, lawyers and business men who are Amhara are leaving America and their homes to go save their people from TPLF’s ruthless and indiscriminate slaughter of people in North Gonder and Afar. If we aren’t supposed to protect our children and land from genocide, what are we supposed to do, Ask the UN or america for help? Don’t make me laugh.

I am not Ethiopian but as an African American, it means a lot to me that Ethiopia is the only African country that wasn't colonized. My family told me a few of our relatives (I forget exactly who) joined the volunteers to fight for Ethiopia when Italy invaded. Although many of the volunteers were stopped by the US, it pains me to see this now. Not just in Ethiopia but in many places in Africa. Africa has suffered tremendously but the Motherland is strong. I still believe in a united Africa. It's not easy but it's still worth fighting for. I pray for peace in Ethiopia.

I’m astonished how little we hear about this war. Its absolutely massive, brutal on a scale the world hasn’t seen in decades, the geopolitical consequences of Ethiopia’s collapse will be massive. Second largest country in Africa and a beacon of stability in the east of Africa, descending into genocidal anarchy, yet barely a thing in our media, it was seen as a mere footnote when an entire town was slaughtered by Eritreans in Tigray. Its bizarre how Syria, Iraq or Yugoslavia got way more attention.

It’s truly disappointing to see how absolutely one sided Western media has been in regards to this conflict. While we can acknowledge that atrocities have been committed by the govt this report can’t even acknowledge that the conflict started after an attack on a military base. An attack the TPLF was on record as saying they did. It’s really scary honestly, to watch journalists frame this in such a one sided way. Especially considering that many of these same outlets have chronicled the TPLF’s crimes. Journalism should be balanced.

I'm deeply concerned by this misleading, one-sided VICE news video. I have always admired watching VICE news media videos that are well prepared by the hard-working Journalists and media crew. But watching this documentary made by Julia Steer, regarding the war in my home country made me question the credibility of all the videos I have watched on this platform. I'm well aware of the current situation as I have been monitoring the situation closely since the beginning of the war and I'm happy to break down to you the series of events that have unfolded if you have a lack of proper information. At 0:30 The network blackout is due to the destruction made by Tigrayan forces. Ethiopian telecom rebuilt some of the destructed network lines while Ethiopian forces took control of Tigray but TPLF has killed some workers who were repairing the lines and destroyed all the repaired lines while the TPLF took back control. At 0:40 Julia Steer wasn't honest how the war started. The war started because on the night of Nov. 3-4 2020, T.P.L.F. forces attacked a federal military base in Tigray. A Federal Military that was keeping the Tigrayan's safe from potential Eritrean attack. Julia never mentioned that. Instead, she portrayed as if the Ethiopian government and Abiy Ahmed as the perpetrators. While I believe there were human rights violations caused by the war, why didn't she mention the violations made by the Tigrayan forces on Amhara women and kids? Why should her reporting have to be one-sided? All lives are equal right? Also, the human rights violations made by TPLF are far greater than the violations caused by Ethiopian forces, Fano, Eritrean forces as a consequence of the war. I can support this with multiple pieces of evidence if required. In case you are wondering what The Federal military was doing in Tigray before getting attacked. The Northern Federal Guard has been there for almost 30 years protecting Northern Ethiopia as there always have been tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea over a land dispute. After the Ethiopian government and the Eritrean government declared peace in 2018, the Federal army was working on helping the farmers on seasonal locust swarms before being backstabbed by the people it protects. I hope to hear back from VICE on this matter. Sharing a false narrative costs Ethiopians a lot and it doesn't help Tigrayans at all. It only makes things worse. Please investigate this, check your sources properly and change the false rhetoric used by your Journalist.

I don't know how that would justify these crimes even if it were true, but it's Abiy who started the war, backed by Amhara extremists who wanted to bring an old system where they were dominant, and the despotic Isaias who has grudges against Tigrayans for defeating him at the war he started out of jealousy. Tigrayans are defending themselves. You guys seem pretty successful at disseminating your propaganda because Tigrayans are relatively small in number and you've cut them off from the rest of the world since the war started. That probably explains the relatively large number of likes you're getting.

It's Abiy who started the war, backed by Amhara extremists who wanted to bring an old system where they were dominant, and the despotic Isaias who has grudges against Tigrayans for defeating him at the war he started out of jealousy. Tigrayans are defending themselves. TPLF(Tigray's gov) captured the army bases because Tigray was already surrounded from all directions and the war even had started in some places already. They have no choice but to neutralize the imminent attack from within before dealing with the attack from outside. You guys seem pretty successful at disseminating your propaganda because Tigrayans are relatively small in number and you've cut them off from the rest of the world since the war started. That probably explains the relatively large number of likes you're getting.

@@BM-df9bp ok, so say you are right and a group of Amhara wanted to dominate power, if the TPLF wins they will do the same thing. Neither side is right in that case. Division along ethnic lines is just wrong, period. In all of history it’s never turned out to be a good thing. The everyday people end up suffering. I see no evidence that the TPLF wants all people of different ethnic groups to come together but Abey has eluded to that. One Ethiopian is strong and can grow, there’s so much potential but a divided Ethiopia and animosity between ethnic groups will just weaken the country.
