Nevsun in Eritrea : Dealing With a Dictator - the fifth estate

When a small Vancouver mining company Nevsun struck gold in a remote corner of Africa, it started with so much promise. In remote Eritrea, Nevsun built a mine that was generating $700 million in profits in its first four years of operation. But it was also generating a lot of controversy - because Nevsun was partnered with a brutal dictatorship that runs the country and controls 40% of the mine. That has led to allegations by the UN and Human Rights Watch that the regime has used conscripted military labour in the mine. The Eritrea government has also been accused of funneling arms to the terrorist group al-Shabaab.
Nevsun denies the allegations of human rights abuses and insists it is a “template for responsible international business.”
What is the price of doing business with a dictator? Mark Kelley investigates.

I think this is great news for East Africa, Eritreans are not prawns they took their country into their hands. I hope their leader would give his power to a younger generation. If Nevsun & Eritrea are doing business together, Eritrean infrastructure should show the wealth of this transactions in the coming years.

Lediya Soloman I like your idea, but unfortunately there is no young generation left in Eritrea, majority of our youths has left the countries because of this evil men called Isaias Afwerki. Do you know that more than 400 Eritreans flee the country every month 2 escape ruthless repression including unlimited forced labour for the government May God be with the Eri ppl. Fact Isaias will disappear one day but by God will get better than him. Peace

Wise Berhan I know it's ridiculous the amount of Eritreans fleeing. But hopefully this will keep them in the country, Africa is developing but it will take time. I agree the leadership should be handed down, this is what is keeping the country stagnant. He has lost touch with the youth. God bless.

Lol Al'shabab? This is an Ethiopian/american creation. Your saying the mine money went into supporting them? HOW? when these allegations were made in 2009? and the mine didn't start producing minerals till 2012? not to mention that the United Nations itself said there is NO links between al shabab ? Come on this goes way beyond bad journalism. You also mentioned kenya... they are on record saying that Eritrea has nothing to do with alshabab and that Ethiopian generals are more suspicious. The list goes on and on. You need to stop being Ethiopia's propaganda bullhorn. I know they paid you their US/Canadian aid money bud damn this is glaringly bias and unethical at its core.

But the people in that country have not voted for over, lets say 10-12 years, the government and its political party has not changed... For nearly two decades president Isaias Afwerki's regime used the border conflict with Ethiopia and the UN sanctions as a pretext to force it's citizens to indefinite military service. Just over a year ago Ethiopian government signed peace agreement with Isaias Afwerki and as a result the UN also removed the sanctions on Eritrea raising hopes among Eritreans that their government will finally reform by limiting the military service to only 18 months rather than serving for life. To this day the regime in Asmara hasn't implemented any reform dashing the hopes and dreams of youth. As a result the brightest and the most ambitious youth of Eritrea have entirely given up of any hopes or pursuing their dreams in their country and instead continue to flee from Eritrea to this day. Very sad!!

They are leaving because there is a political force behind it with an ultimatum goal that is Europe gives many easy asylums to Eritreans so our youth can flee thinking they are in paradise. But really this is a tool for Europe, the West and UN to then use and turn around say "look at how many people are fleeing?" Etc etc. When an African state stands up to western foreign policy and says enough is enough with your bullshit and we can feed our selves - all of a sudden then there is an uproar All this is happening because my country does NOT want to kneel to western dictatorship and adopt its filthy enslavement monetary system of Debt Debt Debt whilst they still exploit our resources! What I don't understand is why the whole word sends food there the moment people get hungry. If you want to ditch a dictator we created instability in the middle-east, but here we use farming subsidies to prevent instability....

LEAVE JOSEPH ALONE! Why do western government bully a government that holds up the Bible that they were suppose to uphold? Eritrea is a small country that endured many years of war and now, are at peace with their relatives, the Ethiopia. Eritrea/Joseph & Ethiopia/Judah, I hope that you strive for perfection, that is my hope and prayer.

I was living there in 2011 ..and I don't think working on the mining area was forced labour..I worked in ministry of education ....and I saw people went there to work for a better pay. As working under the government was something useless worth of 20$/month compared to the mining ~$100/month .but generating a huge income out of that didn't solve any problems of the people. there no no clear information given where the money is going..
