Eritrea, a small nation on the Horn of Africa, is one of the most isolated countries in the world. It is also one of the most secretive, and has been duly nicknamed the “African North Korea”. What is everyday life like under the dictatorship? Why do so many Eritreans flee the country in a bid to reach Europe? Our reporters Nicolas Germain and Romeo Langlois were given exceptional permission to report from Eritrea, which ranks last on the Reporters Without Borders press freedom index.
It's very rare for Western journalists to go to Eritrea. FRANCE 24 has just spent a week there. Although often accompanied by government “minders”, our reporters tried to find out why thousands of Eritreans flee their country every month, despite there being neither war nor famine. Along with Syria and Afghanistan, Eritrea is one of the most highly represented countries among migrants trying to reach Europe.

This little-known East African nation was born in 1991 after a thirty-year armed struggle for independence against Ethiopia. Another bloody border dispute between 1998 and 2000 left some 80,000 people dead. Ever since then, Ethiopia has occupied part of Eritrea, which claims it is threatened by its vast neighbour.
The Eritrean government has therefore implemented an indefinite national military service, which is compulsory. This poorly paid service, which can last more than a decade, is the main reason why so many young people try to flee. They also want to escape poverty and the authoritarian Marxist regime of President Isaias Afwerki, the independence hero who has been in power for the last 25 years.
Our reporters met ordinary Eritreans, members of the government and the government's opponents in exile in a bid to understand this isolated, fascinating nation.

It was very careless and idiotic to conduct an interview with the road workers and not alter their voices and completely blur their figure . You have literally sentenced these people to death or prison for speaking candidly about the current conditions they face.

I'm Ghanaian 🇬🇭 and I absolutely love Eritreans. I have hope things will get better someday the tide in Africa is changing and days for all African tyrant leaders are numbered. The population in Eritrea is not much, and I believe once this man is force out of office, within 10 to 20yrs Eritrea can revive the economy. If Rwanda can do it after a bad Civil War so can you, within 20yrs Rwanda has transformed its nation you'd never imagine what they went through . Use Rwanda as example. Things will get better. I'm. Very optimistic. I don't know why but I just love Eritreans so much. I care about the country and I care about the Eritrean people.

No, The economy may prosper after the Dictatorship is gone but the civilians will never benefit from these changes. Rwanda still has poor life quality and so has Ethiopia who has one of the fastest, growing economies in the world for 20-25 years, yet the people are still suffering.

Any form of tyranny is wrong. The media is not telling me nothing. I have the capacity to think for myself. People should be allow to elect their leader freely without being killed or persecuted. Tyranny doesn't makes a man victorious, it makes him arrogant of his own actions. Every human beings deserves a better life, whether if it's Eritrea of the ones in America, Asia, Middle East or Australia. So keep on speaking ignorance in the face of the truth.

What did we Ethiopians do? Seriously? Italy took the land from Ethiopia and created Eritrea in 1890. There was Ethiopia before Italians set foot on East Africa. Independence in Eritrea is nothing but greed and Superior complex designed to satisfy a selected few. Eritreans didn't want to be part of Ethiopia because Eritrea was more developed than Ethiopia due to colonization; Ethiopia was poor and Eritrea was rich and they thought that Ethiopia was going to hold them back. They did not care about over 2170 years history. Italy built them roads and buildings and little Rome and opened a lot of factories and gave them a big coastline. They didn't want to share it with Ethiopia. Sadly, you want us to apologize for that. Besides, we didn't do anything. It's their own government that is oppressing them. Speak for yourself. Don't speak for me. You can't accuse Ethiopians of something that we didn't do. Because of a map that Italians drew 100 years ago, Ethiopia became a landlocked country, with 123 millions of people. Her rich history don't mean anything to people who are ignorant and have no respect for legacy that our ancestors left behind. They didn't die for the selected few. They died for all of us. That's another story. We Ethiopians can't be held accountable for a failed state. EPLF or PFDJ fought for 20 years (- 10 ELF) and defeated Derg. And People want them to hand over the power. Are they crazy? They created Eritrea and they are going to hold the power as long as it takes. There is nothing that Eritreans can do about it. And It is not Ethiopians' fault. In fact, if Eritreans want to see a change in Eritrea. They need Ethiopia's help. They can't do it by themselves. It is near impossible. Ethiopia is the only country that can save them.

+Lam rof it is hard to create a political party and go against the government in ethiopia, but it is not totally impossible. there are different levels of oppression, so you can't really say that ethiopia's level of oppression is at the same level with eritrea. Even though i agree with you that Ethiopia is not a totally free country, because the Ethiopian government does like to arrest journalists and calls them terrorists. But you can't say that what the ethiopian government is doing is the same as eritrea.

No one will talk to you if you ask questions in Eritrea. Especially if you ask parents about their children in Sawa. They will be scared to death to say something about it as their life will definitely be at risk. It is very easy in Eritrea for someone to arrest you even shoot you. There is no justice, there is no human rights!!!!!! People get killed everyday for no apparent reason. I wonder why people compare Eritrea with North Korea? I really don't understand, because North Korean people at least they do not get starved, they probably eat 3 times a day. However, most of Eritrean people in Eritrean they don't have food to eat, they don't have water to drink. Their electric system is very very poor, most of the small and big businesses are now closed due to luck of Electricity. If you meet those people who left Eritrea recently, you will be shocked by their history. Torture, rape, imprisonment, disappearance even death are normal in Eritrea. Anyway I would like to thank you from the bottom my heart for sharing the video. Could you please upload more videos regarding life in Eritrea. The world will have some kind of insight about Eritrea. This report is buyest, there is always two side of the story. The root cause of our problems is Ethiopia's 500,000 well mechanised army supported tanks and fighter planes are waiting to invade and attack the whole of Eritrea at any moment, infact to this day there is border clashes in a daily or weekly bases. Why don't you tell Ethiopian government to leave our territory it controls since 2001 and respect international law and Alger's peace agreement. To western governments Where were you? When we fought 30 years war since 1961 with our big neighbor Ethiopia, when we are bombarded with claster bombs and shelling in a daily basis. You can find it on youtube. Despite all odds we won our independence without anyone help with their weapons. 100 millions of Ethiopia's against 3millions Eritrea's population. 15 to 1 ratio. We lost nearly 300,000 people for independence. Since 1961 Eritreans feel betrayed by the UN and international community, who approved the annexation of Eritrea by Ethiopia which was the causes of 30 years war until 1991. Now history is repeating itself, the UN and international community, allowing Ethiopia invade and control part of Eritrean territory, in 2001 since then with their media beating war-drum. Now I am asking you, how do you expect Eritrean government to react?

What kind of fairy tales are your illiterate making up? Lmao Ethiopia was 43 million at the height of the war. Only reason eritrea is a country today is thanks to tplf, olf, cia and support from America and the arab world to distablize Ethiopia plus over 80 armed groups fighting against derg. Both tplf and Olf had more than the double amount of soldiers, so dont get your panties in a wad about some eri tv msnufactured narrative lmfao thats why we took over your country within days as soon as the incompitent tplf officers was letting the united force of oromo and amhara do our thing. Meles actually saved y'all, the troops wanted to take Assab back. We had to GIVE back badme and disputed areas because your weak army could not do anything.

You need to ask the regular Eritreans in the street of Asmara. You also asked why Eritreans leaving Eritrea? Simple answer, Because Europeans and USA lured them by giving them easy entry visa to stay abroad. So any countries citizen will take a chance for that.

Eritrea is neither the "North Korea" nor the "Cuba" of Africa. These comparisons are simple minded. There are however line items of similarity when it comes to neo-colonial geo-political manipulations such as "express asylum" and other sadistic incentives. So it is perversely comprehensible that lots of young Eritreans would risk their lives for the glossy promise of economic "freedom" abroad even though their fathers gave their lives for them in Eritrea's epic independence struggle. One aspect I fail to understand is when families are able to come up with thousands of euros to enable clandestine emigration and for paying ransoms to trafficker scum en route, these $$$$s could also be invested in local small businesses, for example. But the draw of riches is usually stronger than reason. In closing I'd say, that the EU's latest strategy to send free money to Eritrea to supposedly help stem the refugee flow is purely despicable self interest and bears not a grain of genuine concern nor a solution to these complex issues.

+cine pobre You raised a great point. Some Eritrean's in the diaspora are sending money to their relatives inside Eritrea to help them migrate illegally, which usually costs thousands of dollars (5-10k minimum). The money that is spent on smuggling people into western countries (making smugglers rich) could/should be spent on establishing businesses inside Eritrea. The lure of rapid economic improvement is understandable, but those fleeing and those helping them flee should consider the alternatives.

I'm not sure if that is you or not, are you behind this indiegogo campaign? If so, what exactly does it mean to be "able to generate considerable revenue marketing Eritrea's most profitable and sustainable resource"? The page also says, "As a Friend of Eritrea I have created a business model that within 18 months at no cost to the Eritrean State will generate 2 million dollars in revenue as well as substantial residuals for years to come." Are there any specific details that can be shared about this scheme? My skepticism meter is going off and I would like some more info if I am to contribute.
