0:00 - Introduction
Remember the first time you heard "Enter Sandman" by Metallica?
Or maybe you've never heard the song at all.
It's one of the most popular metal tracks of all time, but those outside the metal or rock world might not recognize it.
The last time Larnell Lewis came out to Drumeo, we challenged him to write a drum part - on the spot - to a song he'd never heard before (click here to watch) and he blew everyone away.
This time, Larnell wanted to try a style he's not known for playing: metal!
If you want to see a fusion drummer try to play one of the most popular metal songs of all time, don't miss this video (you can skip to 9.33 if you just want to watch Larnell play).
01:08 - Active listening
When learning a song, he practices active listening, which includes looking for these things:
Song form: How many measures are in each section?
Tone: How does the song feel? Is it aggressive or calm?
Specifics: Any shots you should look out for?
Larnell takes an analytical approach and breaks down all the details, noticing patterns and themes and how the different instruments play off each other. Because of this, he can already hum the chorus' melody and drum part after only hearing the song once, and remembers most of the structure as well.
09:33 - Performance
While he's known for his great drumming skills, he also has excellent listening skills and a strong memory. Larnell knows what to prioritize when learning, so he's able to learn quickly. You can learn how to do it too!

Yeah same, i'm like 'wait, he can hear the drums?'
I love how he recognizes that the half-beat would mess him up, so he adapted the lines with high-hat fills to not loose track while keepin the half beat on the crashes. It ended up harder to perform than the original line, but for his mind work, the extra notes ended up helping him keep on track. A nice improvise perfect for a first-time performance. A true Genius.
"I'm assuming it's 1, 2, 3, 4?". Suddenly Larnell started to panic. That's not a time signature he's ever played before.

HE was able to take away the agressive playing, and still execute the song with high precision, that is remarkable, amazing, talent and technique together!!!!!!
I don’t know what’s more impressive, the fact he analyzed it so perfectly on the first listen or the fact he proceeded to play it perfectly on the first try.
He claims he’s not metal but then goes right ahead and says: “I’ll take more volume”. That’s a pretty metal way to say a pretty metal thing.

Try repeat listens but just focusing on one layer; like listen through the track just concentrating on high hats or basslines. Good learning experience.
Love the active listening at the beginning, the way his eyes scanned the kit and he was ghost drumming around the kit. Brilliant performance and great comments at the end! ❤🙌🏽👏🏼✌🏽
An incredible talent, I would love a window into his mind when he listens, just feels like another level of hearing.

He makes it looks so effortless! Amazing work
Watching someone who is so good at his craft dissect a tune like this is amazing. A man who is that technical walk through tune like enter sandman is awesome to watch. It was cool to see the transformation, he was very studied and near introspective in the beginning, he got a little more comfortable, loosened up and then the power of BLEEEGGGGGH compelled him to just let her rip. A lil surprised he didn't charge through the kit after. Also after seeing this I think his feet are so fast I don't know if he'd need a double pedal for blast beats. He had so much fun! So well done dude. Much Love Mr Lewis!
It'd be cool to see him play to a famous song without hearing the original drums

Important to understand, his ability to do this isn't just "Talent". It's the result of A LOT of training, education, and experience. He has knowledge about song structures and tendencies via music theory that most people don't, and is able to use that knowledge to understand a song much faster than an untrained person could.

This was too easy for a musician this good. The more modern videos in this series that play the song without drums first is a great improvement to the series! That lets viewers to learn more about each drummer's style.

wow. i had to scroll through a few of these videos in this series to find a song that i truly knew & could really grasp with full appreciation the talent behind the artist’s ability to align with a song completely unbeknownst to them & put out what sounds - to me - to be - if i closed my eyes - arguably, the original. this drummer made my love for one of my favorite songs - renewed. this artist is SO talented ! & helps me to appreciate the unbelievable talent of even those drummers in this series performing songs that - likewise - i do not know either. regardless - every drummer & every song i’ve watched in this series so far i wouldn’t have been able to differentiate from the original or not, whether i’d heard it before or not.

Even if you don't know anything about music, these videos are so interesting because it is inherently cool to see people who understand something and are passionate about it discovering something new and see how they learn it. He might struggle a bit with many of the songs from Rush ... or "they" might struggle with supplying the number of required drums and other "stick-based instruments". Its not just "having the drums/instruments" but also "positioning them in a manner so you dont have to twist completely to reach".

I really like how innocent and nice your comment is. What I think when reading it: Let's find the mainstream song he can't play and break him! And if that doesn't work, let's move on to experimental stuff. But that's why I like your comment, the series would be great if it's not about the challenge but about the lessons learned.

Being able to listen to it for the first time in dissected the way he does is incredible in itself, but to be able to perform it in two takes… Probably to recording-level good is unreal.
