Large Eye Floaters Explained - Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD)

What is a Posterior Vitreous Detachment? Eye floaters commonly develop as we age but sometimes you can have a large floater that we refer to as a posterior vitreous detachment (pvd). Posterior vitreous detachment symptoms may include eye floaters and flashes, blurred vision or even complete vision loss in the event of a retinal detachment. Thankfully, eye floaters often improve on their own, otherwise floaters may be treated with a few surgical procedures. Learn about laser vitreolysis here • Laser Surgery for Eye ...

Lifestyle has a huge impact besides genetics on eye or any body part health. Eating all the good foods and herbs especially with fats, proteins, fiber, and the list goes on will affect this PVD issue along with other issues. Besides the surface of our body and eyes our insides need to be supported and detoxed on a regular basis. An overtaxed liver does not function well and does not allow us to digest and absorb well, by the time we notice, these symptoms have arisen and the damage was done. The key is to start off healthy and stay healthy. It's not too late to ever detox and support and heal the body, even the eyes and teeth, its all living tissue, it may get harder as we age but it still happens or we would be dead. Collagen is taken in also, it helps the gut so the body can get its nutrients and keep functioning better. So make chicken soup or bone broth or collagen supplements of good quality as well as all those beautiful fresh fruits and veggies. My life experience and research has shown me this over decades. Blessings and good health.

I've had large floaters since I was in my mid-30's (now 72). Had them "blasted" by YAG laser by a doctor in Ft. Meyers, Florida. Since insurance didn't cover it, had to save up $1800 per eye. Totally worth it, as I couldn't read a book before the treatment. I've read more books since the treatment than in the previous 20 years. The floaters in each eye would sometimes merge and blot out a stop sign or traffic light while driving. It's now been over a decade since I got the second eye done, no regrets. I worked for a laser company in the 70's so I understood what they can or cannot do.

Had a PVD incident about 7 years ago, but don't recall having the large floater issue, but rather a small very dark floater that mostly stays out of sight in the upper left area of my vision in the left eye. What I experienced was while shopping at night, after a very long drive, I had a circle of flashing white lights...plenty scary when you're away from home and have only ever heard of retinal detachment. Thankfully was able to visit a local vision care facility on an emergency basis, where it was diagnosed, with a follow-up a few days later upon returning home. That eye has never "felt" the same since. More recently I'm noticing it is sending to feel somewhat 'goopy' though it is an eye that tends to dryness. Even prior to this incident I had to stop wearing contacts because of the dryness. I also just watched your video on macular degeneration as my (deceased in 2014) mom had one eye with dry, and one eye with wet and I know she would get an injection in one of them. Her mom had macular degeneration to the point of being legally blind, and was taking classes in Braille, so I am a bit fearful of (and need to get in for an exam - it's been since pre-Covid lockdowns!). I keep the lined grid on a wall...no wavy lines! Thank you for your informative explanations.

They give you just the right amount of anesthesia to put you out for a couple minutes, then they give you a nerve block.. after that you don't feel much.. just pressure. And you're in a state that you don't care anyway. Through the whole process.. in and out of consciousness, I remember mostly feeling curious. For everyone who has eye floaters and are currently in panic: keep on reading. I first encountered floaters when I was about 19 but somehow they moved out of my field of vision, then at 27 I suddenly had a bunch of them. At that time I also had bad anxiety, stress etc and I couldn’t stop looking for the floaters that it became a daily obsession. But: I overcame it. It WILL get better! Try to find the core of where the anxiety comes from, maybe with a little more help like therapy or someone you trust to talk to. Strangely, I still have floaters but I barely notice them because I’m not scared of them anymore. The mind can be a powerful ally or your biggest enemy. If I can do it, you can do it too!

I do have anxiety so maybe I’m just hyper focusing on these things, liek you said. I decide recently.. well.. my quality of life is lower by worrying that I’ll go blind. Your videos here are the best ones about this problem. If you started to see flashes ( as lightnings ) in one eye then you probably will have those also in the second eye as well. In my case flashes in the second eye began with 1, 5 year difference. Of course, not always flashes lead to the detachment of retina. It can lead to only large floaters and then flashes get less and less still disappear. Yeah aging comes with such problem too, which I never imagine before! Now I check my eyes regularly.

Thank you for the clear and concise presentation. I'm going to the doctor now for a floater. He says that six weeks is the observation period. He also prescribed medication for dry eyes. I've been with that about three weeks. Sometimes it appears to be gone, then it will come back. It likes to get in the center of the eye. Truthfully, this floater is making me nervous. I need it to go.

I first noticed eye floaters in my 20’s after I had a serious eye infection. I’d been dealing with blurry vision for months and when it cleared all I saw were floaters and it drove me nuts. I was beyond frustrated when I was told there was no way to get rid of them. I do find that after fasting for 24+ hours my vision is much clearer and I experience less floaters for a few days. Thank you for this video and information, and it’s something to be aware of for sure. Here’s to hoping I don’t experience large eye floaters.

@@donniemoder1466 His explanation is a bit misleading though. Floaters don't necessarily mean you have a PVD. It just means your vitreous is changing and there are forming some solid lipids in the vitreous. What he is referring to here is actually less common then normal floaters and occurs past mid-age, when the vitreous is shrinking, the bag that contains it comes loose from the back of the eye and when it pulls the strong connection around the optical nerve loose, that can give a more dense, less moving floater then the floaters that people are commonly familiar with; it's called a Weiss Ring. I'm an optometrist btw, so I know.

Thank you for a very insightful explanation with regard to floaters. I was born with extreme nearsightedness and have been experiencing floaters for over 50 years. I experienced a retinal detachment twice, with positive surgical repairs, then due to blunt force to one eye and delay in eye care, after a poor prognosis for a third detached retina I went completely blind in the eye. Decades later, I wound up contracting Wet AMD in the good eye, which was successfully treated twenty years ago, however, I developed a cataract and had it repaired. But throughout all these decades eye specialist always down played eye floaters, then when I had the cataract surgery the Ophthalmologist told me that no specialist in their right mind would dare operate to remove my floaters. Luckily they are not blocking my vision but within the last two weeks I noticed a new one that pretty big, very dark and dense, and whenever I look down it shoots upward , akin to a cockroach climbing up a wall at jet speed. Making appointment to see my ophthalmologist this week.

Both my mom and dad had talked about having floaters, but I didn't fully understand. A few months ago I noticed having floaters for the first time, and it was terrifying. I was taking to shower and I happen to have a large window above the shower and it was super bright in the room. My bathroom is white and I noticed the floaters moving and had no clue what was going on or what I was seeing. I've sort of gotten used to it now and it's really only noticeable on white or light colored backgrounds for me. I have a high myopic prescription, a -8 in my right eye and -6 in the left. In the past my eye doctor has warned about retinal detachment.
