Kwik Brain Episode 120: How to Fix a Broken Heart with Guy Winch

Today’s question for the Kwik Brain community is how do you fix a broken heart?
I’m excited to welcome today’s guest, Dr. Guy Winch. Guy’s books have sold millions of copies and been translated into 26 different languages, and his TED Talks have been seen by people all over the world. Heartbreak is a challenge so many of us face and Guy is here to talk us through it.
Heartbreak can make us crazy-there is no other experience that can make people do things completely out of character. It causes deep grief, and pain, and can cause our brain to perceive the relationship inaccurately. The good news is that by learning to override our natural brain responses, we can teach ourselves to heal and come out stronger on the other side.
In this conversation, we’ll define romantic heartbreak, explain why heartbreak can manifest like an addiction and how heartbreak affects our mind. We’ll give you some practical ideas for getting through heartbreak, and offer advice for those of you wanting to help a loved one who might be going through heartbreak.

My list is written on my bedroom mirror in glass marker. I can see it in bed when I'm missing him morning and night. It's a powerful trick and my list is long. My heart loved somone who my brain knew was not right for me. But I still need to be reminded when I'm feeling lonely and believing I'll never love or feel loved like that again.

Please heal❤ starting by looking within yourself and never at the external. You are not less than anyone else, you are important to you alone because only you can judge yourself ❤the feel or ideas of ourselves are created solely by ourselves. I wish you start being happy now, rather than later. I was struggling for over 20 years after my divorce and I realized I could have healed sooner than I did ❤

That's the mistake I made. My ex-wife of 17 years just gone in 2021. In February 2023 I jumped into new relationship. I dropped all of my anger on her. 22 days ago she left with another man. I can't forgive myself right. God I missed her.

My heartbreak pertains to the death of my sister. I was supposed to move to Greece, where she lived and had a family business. We had plans, lots of them, to travel and see the wonders of the earth. She and all the beautiful things we would do together died, too. She was a wonderful sister; my best friend and I grieve daily. Not all heartbreak pertains to ex-lovers.

The worst is longing to see him and touch him. I fell in love with the guy who turned out really bad and mentally torturing me ( fitted the description of narcissist). I went no contact about a week ago, he is silent too. I dont know if i can take it anymore, my heart literally hurts. I just know if i make contact first, he will take me for zero and nothing will change. I must hold on.

Thanks for the support and words of wisdom. Two months ago my 11year relationship ended when my ex stopped talking to me, I was crushed the night I went out dancing and saw him on the dance floor amorously dancing arm in arm with the new woman. I felt like I was stabbed in the heart. We unfortunately talked a few times and he wanted to remain friends . He now blocked me and said “this is our last conversation” I’m now trying to occupy my thoughts by doing the things I like to do and it has helped me . I still have the vision of them dancing . It really feels surreal. But life goes on and I know I’ll find my soulmate when it’s meant to be. Self love is key.

This was super helpful, thank you so much. One key insight for me is that the brain will always bring up good memories as it wants us to remind that it caused pain and we should not repeat it. To balance it out one must list out and remember the negative instances of the relationship.

What if it's a consequence of two people doing the best they could but just not being enough. No body goes into a relationship wanting it to end. Nothing feels better than love and that's why nothing feels worse than heartbreak. Your mind is just protecting you from future pain by reminding you of the good but try to remember the pain so that you can have future good.

This was a wonderfully validating, simple, but insightful video/talk. Thank you. I call that "list" of negative traits "Romantic Inversions". (I made it up!) They are absolutely helpful as reminders of what wasn't right and what can be better next time. The one thing I would add is that everyone is on a different timeline. So, yeah, it may be five months later and talking about it for the hundredth time, but everyone's experience is different.

My father had abandonment issues. He came unglued when my mother left him...he hid me with friends of the family so she could never find me, he stalked her, took a pistol to the hospital where she worked...she took the Foreign Service exam and was selected for training by the US State Dept...she went for the training came back to try to find me to take me with her, but I was too well hidden in a tiny town 130 miles from our home city with my grandmothers former hairdresser and her engineer husband...I was boarded with them, my grandparents paying, they didnt want to lose me. My father remarried immediately "to give me a mother" , that too was a disaster eventually after about a decade. She was a golddigger. After about 7 yrs she found a wealthier man and broke up HIS marriage. My father fell apart, stalked HER, became very dangerous and came up with a plot to KILL her, It was horrible. He didnt, but came VERY close:had the altered weapon he showed me, had a detailed plot etc. I became DETERMINED NEVER to get to that point in any relationship. I learned how to control my emotions , negative ones. I also learned to be very rational. That made me very successful in life and eventually very successful in a 40 yr relationship happy and mutually satisfying. I have led a calm yet adventurousness life, no emotional drama. It certainly taught what I didnt want to be. Late in my mothers life we reconnected...she was always on the other side of the world....Paris first when I was little, then Japan for many years, then Hong Kong remarried to a BRIT and Australia in early retirement and finally England when I had finished grad school and was a psychologist. We built a lovely relationship. I was always very careful to avoid emotionally volatile men.

Hi, how are you doing? Reading your comment, my journey has led me to experience what's been discussed, heartbreak as causing symptoms of withdrawal a few times in life. I feel very fortunate my journey has taught me it's because we need people like air. We all have childhood experiences that hurt us and caused us to feel rejected. As adults when we're feeling rejected, we feel it as we did irrationally & illogically as a child, as a subconscious habit now. The objective is to know yourself, choose a partner you can love unconditionally, focus on their qualities when human nature seems to cause rifts and triggers old wounds so you can stay grateful, which is really keeping peace within. People respond favorably to our peace within and joy. The result of these states is confidence. Being okay with things as they are because you know how to receive your desires and you know and believe you're an amazing, worthy person. When you understand how important your energy is as an adult to cater to and ensure, at minimum, a safe, secure, comfortable life, AND more importantly, realize we're kind of still expecting others to care for our well-being as we did as children with our parents, we realize we don't have time for feeling this badly because one person no longer wants to be with us. Think of it this way, if you knew your thoughts created your reality, faith in your desires coming, all is well, you would have quality relationships, you would choose someone who is a soulmate and you'd be okay if they chose to leave. The alternative is what we all have subjected ourselves with and its a shame because the people we're feeling so wounded without are human and we surely shouldn't subject ourselves to missing out on a life of abundance and harmony among our mind, body, spirit and soul. We simply have to break the habit of fear and adopt the habit of love. Believe with every thought of that which you desire. It will show up. That person can go and do and be whatever, you're on your path to continue to follow peace within, self love and bliss. You are a receiver. XO

You don't go to that apt. or allow ANY talk of him. Move to another city, if you need to do so to get away.

I never wanted to really get involved at work and definitely not with a boss. I’m so depressed. He acts like he is happy and moved on. He broke up with me. He wants nothing to do with me.

Many women desire inner beauty, humility, and connection....holding his hand A man may not be the most attractive but every man has attractively looking hands that she likes to hold. I thought men's hands are attractive because it shows his personality gently holding a puppy, or gently holding a baby watching him cook etc Even some model here in Europe, ordinary but nice looking lady, her mom is an actress. She said too to her boyfriend on a tv cooking show, I like men´s hands, I find their hands most attractive because I like to watch him cooking or doing something. and that when she has sex with guy, she stays with him and can not understand women who dont. Television and media created standards about how men and women should look like, and what is attractive about men, but it doesn't mean women agree with the tv standards. Television makes more money from broken people therefore they say nonsense and happy people buy less stuff. So they will say men have to have a beautiful face and women also have to have very attractive face but everybody sees attraction in something else, it may be something that is not visible with eyes but with the energy and vibration. If he or she is a good violin player or piano or tennis player, the face is not so important in the moment. Nice women may like his personality, humility charisma, and passion for hobbies. Television may say women love muscles etc, yet ordinary women may love his hands, not just his arms because she sees him holding a puppy with his hands, not his arms she sees his gentle side and sees his gentle fingers holding something, or playing guitar. The muscles the television is talking about every day when they sell some products are hidden under his T-shirt anyway. but his hands show his personality and his gentle approach. yet everybody focuses on his face because some tv presenter said that all people should do it this way.

I have instructed courses in Stalking and letting go of the past. However, I went through this struggle myself this year. And it was real, when a man that was a family friend that was older than me by seventeen years. He told me after our five-month affair that it was not going to work out. I felt I was dying inside and keep texting him and tried to show up at his local breakfast place, then I took myself to a park to think about my shameful behavior. I love him and always will love him more than my two ex-husbands the father of my children. I then started writing a list of the positive and negative with him, then I wrote why I love him so much. I wrote a love letter to him and buried it under a tree with an item I crafted for him. Next, I talked to some of my single lady friends that have been through obsessions of a man. I showed them his picture they told me he was the ugliest man I ever dated. I said I agree, and he was the worst in bed. I told them my theory is my love for him was the first man I had a crush on, his character, he had many talents in carpentry and music. He made a lot of things in my home and wrote poems and songs for me. He was my also my best friend I was able to talk to him about everything. And it hurt me the most when he told him I was grieving over him, and he could not help me and wanted nothing to do with me. I created a Facebook dating profile seeking men with a lot of his qualities and his features. I was honest about my grieving if they wanted to be a friend to me. I am currently in a relationship with a widow. that is still in love with his wife that past looks a lot like me. We are working through our past together to create a healthy further together. I also, blocked my ex's Facebook and contact numbers. I even was on a dinner date with my new boyfriend. and my ex walked in the restaurant. with a date or girlfriend. He, looked towards me and said, "hello, I just said hello and started talking to my new boyfriend, he played it cool with my ex and I was quiet. And, then he sat down with us and his new date, I was so uncomfortable. I ate my food and remained quite looking on my phone. The night ended and he hugged me and wished me well. Yes, I was hurt, but I blanked it out as if he was just a random person.
