Tteokbokki is one of the most popular Korean street foods in Korea.
Tteok is usually made from rice flour or wheat flour and is relatively high in calories.
In this video, I lowered the calories by making rice cake with potatoes.
Although the texture was not completely the same as the original taste, it was very similar.
1 potato (180g peeled weight)
100g potato starch (or corn starch)
100ml water
a pinch of salt
1 tbsp red pepper paste
0.5 tbsp red pepper powder
1 tbsp sugar
0.5 tbsp soy sauce
0.5 tbsp curry powder
200ml water

I made these last night. Since around 2018, I have tried countless times to make tteok at home since I couldn't find any good ones in store. I failed every time lol. This recipe was the easiest to execute and looked the best. I used corn starch because I couldn't find potato starch any where. This may have affected the texture by making it less bouncy like normal rice cakes, but I'm not sure if that's the case. Overall, it was a lot of effort for it to taste like bland potatoes that shredded in my mouth as I chewed them as if they were freshly mashed. The satisfying bouncy texture of the rice cake was not there at all. Instead, it was like eating super bland mashed boiled potatoes. I added salt while boiling both times in the recipe in an effort to avoid this because I felt it would be bland, but it was still tasteless. Unlike rice cakes which absorb the sauce more deeply, these only had sauce flavor on the outside, so the thicker they were, the blander they tasted. I made three sized because I was really struggling to pipe such a thick mixture, but that ended up being useful because I got a feel of the different sized you could make. Super thick - bad and very potatoey Regular finger width - most satisfying bite Almost like really thick noodles - mushed into nothing in my mouth I'd say if you're really interested in making this, try to season the potatoes with stock or something every step of the recipe to achieve a more robust flavor that doesn't just taste like bland potatoes after a whole lot of effort trying to pipe a thick mixture over boiling hot water Also, they did get super mashy the longer they stayed over the heat and did not thicken the sauce as quickly as regular rice cakes do. The piping bag busted twice.

I couldn't even achieve a somewhat presentable look, taste comes later as soon as i put mine in the boiling water they started to dissolve , ☹️☹️ huge fail

Experimente fazer como eu faço: após amassar as batatas, tempere o purê com tempero seco. Aí sim ficará com gostinho mais temperado. Eu faço nhoque e panquecas com tempero na massa fica muito mais delicioso!😊

I was so interested in doing but I failed .... when I add😂 potatoes to the sauce they dissolved buy I could a few and made something which doesn't look like teoboki ..... I failed doing this dish hope I get this dish with more concentration ..😊 Who all got the same hit a like

@@estherkarenju314 I'm not sure..I would use potato starch and you can find it easily at an Asian market..The corn flour might not bind it well enough

@@tigerlillymoon9310 I am in Kenya.. and I have tried looking for it in many supermarket but couldn't find it.. I could only see corn flour.. but I will not give up . Will continue looking for it.. what about using wheat flour ? Will it work?

@@estherkarenju314 It wouldn't. You need the glue, which is why you need cornstarch or tapioca starch. Try tapioca starch if you can't find corn starch, or another "starch" if they're available. Substitute starch with another starch, or flour with flour. The difference is that starch will be sticky like glue (you can use it as glue) if mixed or cooked with water. Flour wouldn't be sticky enough to be used as glue, so it wouldn't be able to substitute for starch. They're also made from different ingredients: starch comes from carbohydrate-rich foods, whereas flour is made from grinded grains, so they wouldn't be able to substitute each other.
Oh wow I didn’t realise it was that easy, this has been one of the Korean foods I’ve wanted to try the most, definitely going to make this soon

It’s not exactly as chewy as the rice cake version given she’s using a potato and cornstarch (or some form of starch), but it’s close enough - and can be made at home, which is the most brilliant part.

I would say, try this version instead of the original. I once bought ready made rice Tteokbokki rolls to cook them home. adn they did not soak any of the sauce no matter how much I tried. So they were like a zero taste chunck of dough in the middle of a saucefull of plate. This, aat least should have some potato taste, and quite possibly soak some sauce inside.

This is a very interesting way to make 떡 and with potatoes too. They look bouncy and firm but looks like it doesn't "dissolve" in the water like the 100% rice version. I have to try it someday.

@@karomatbibs9969 No. Tumeric is a plant. It gets dried and then grinded into a powder. Tumeric is bright yellow and is used in foods (better to cook it to get its benefits), good for colds and when you're feeling sick, good for the skin, can be used as a colour dye too. The taste is very strong, so make sure to only use a little. Curry powder is a mixture of spices blended together. Some shops have different blends.
