Kidney Disease Diet: How To Eat Right With CKD!

Today we will be discussing the kidney disease diet, how to eat right when you have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with kidney disease? Do you want to do your best to keep that kidney disease from worsening, or progressing to dialysis? Are you a dialysis patient who is struggling with what you should and should not eat? Or are you a totally healthy person with healthy kidneys, and you intend to keep it that way? Well today, I'm going to give you five tips on the kidney diet, how to eat properly when you have kidney disease, and how to prevent it.

This video is intended to be informational only. It is not a medical consultation, nor is it personalized medical advice. For medical advice, please consult your physician.
The best diet for kidney function varies depending on your percent of kidney function, or your eGFR estimated glomerular filtration rate. Be sure to consult your physician, and ask what your EGFR is. If your EGFR is less than 60 milliliters per minute, then you will benefit from a kidney diet. Remember, today I'm going to give you some guidelines for the kidney diet, but you need to consult your physician, and your nutritionist, to find out the specifics of the kidney diet that are best for you. Okay, let's get started. Five tips for the kidney diet, how to eat properly when you have kidney disease.
5 Kidney Disease Diet Tips
1. Protein Intake
2. Practice Low Salt Intake
3. Proper Potassium Intake
4. Phosphorous Intake
5. Water Intake
These are some general guidelines on a proper kidney disease diet, how to eat properly with kidney disease. And I threw in some tips on how to try to prolong your good kidney function if you have no kidney problems. I just want you to live your healthiest, happiest life.

I have CKD and was at 17 GFR a year ago even with restricted amount of meats & fish diet as recommended. Since then I decided to change to vegetarian diet after talking to my nephrologist. I wanted to prolong and stabilize my kidneys function as long as I can. Since then it went from 17 GFR to 20 GFR within 3 months. I am now at 21 GFR. I cook my own food and stick with healthy diet with lower sodium, whole foods, tofu, beans, garbanzo, lots of vegetables. I do have cheat days here and there but I am very limited to what I want to eat in small portion. I hope this helps.

All sorts of tomfoolery & stupid excuses, until they realize that they can’t breathe & going on a ventilator 😢 how sad is that ? Covid doesn’t care about their rights or how they feel !! That virus 🦠 is a devil straight from the pits of hell! Worse than any disease the doctor is trying to educate us about! Yet people will not get vaccinated and are reinfecting the vaccinated people ! Enough is enough now this virus is being called the virus of the unvaccinated & it truly is !!!

Hi Dr.FRITA. Great info, I have had ckd for over 10 years, and I would like to tell people never give up,remain strong, and discipline one's self. My GFR - 30-35 remained stable for 10 years + . When diagnosed with ckd i knew then i needed to change my lifestyle, my diet mainly consists of vegetables, red onions, salads ,fish, olive oil, nuts, green tea and water. Excluded alcohol, salt, sugar, red meat, coke etc. My nephroligist is amazed ,stable over 10 yrs . Love to all, never give up. PS,I wonder if my meditation and sun gazing has helped?? Who knows.

Thank you for taking the time to offer this information. I have Alport Syndrome and am currently stage 4 with a GFR of 28-32 the majority of the time. I have no swelling at all and usually stay pretty dry despite my fluid intake. I was told to intake up to 80 ounces a day, but not necessarily all water because it tends to wash down the sodium and make it low. Of course not everyone is the same, but we all end up at the same conclusion. All of these tips are helpful, and should be followed as closely as possible. I have stated off failure for about 7 years doing all of these things. Stay blessed friends!

The hardest thing at first was how bland everything was and how I felt trapped into such a restricted diet. As I began to adjust to the low sodium in my diet I started exploring different nuts, fruits and vegetables. This added some flavor and variety to my diet. One great side effect is that I lost 60 lbs in the first year on this diet.

Hi Dr. Frita! This video is amazing! I just watched your video because recently, I was diagnose with kidney disease. I have no HPN nor Diabetes but for unknown reason my creatinine is 1.5 and as for my creatinine clearance 61ml/hr and the my Doctor recommend that I should only drink water if I'm thirsty. I don't have any edema on my extremities. The only thing I'm taking right now is Sodium Bicarbonate for 3 months. I hope to hear from you soon. Godbless!

I have learned more on youtube than from any doctor. One thing to keep in mind is your phosphorus intake. I first started seeing a kidney doc several yrs ago, trying to improve my kidney function naturally...and not one doctor ever mentioned reducing how much phosphorus I take in. 2 different primary care physicians, 2 different nephrologists, and a 2 day and 5 day hospital stay....nobody has ever mentioned phosphorus. I learned that right here on youtube from people like the good Dr. Frita. Phosphorus is in a lot of foods...especially packaged foods. And even healthy things like nuts, seeds, and chickpeas. How come no doctor in several yrs has ever mentioned that! Its been drug after drug after drug after drug! Thank you for the work that you do Dr. Frita!!

I have noticed two things when it comes to any dieting, especially when it comes to struggling to keep up with it. 1. Instead of focusing on what you CAN'T eat, you MUST focus on what you CAN eat :) this one ties into the psychology side of it. It will automatically make changing your diet much easier, because it is an optimistic approach. 2. It is important to change one's view on processed, unhealthy foods. Rather than reminding yourself that it's simply not good for you, you have to change your perspective on it entirely. Processed food is NOT food. You can even go as far as viewing it as poison. But simply viewing processed items as NOT FOOD will eventually help you not even crave crappy food anymore. In fact, the idea of consuming processed food will almost make you feel queasy, which is natural. :) I hope this helps anyone who struggles with diet changes. I promise these simple tricks will help tremendously! Good luck!

Hi Dr.Frita.I consider myself very lucky to have come across your channel. The way you approach these issues is amazing in that you make them sound important but not so frightening.Your manner of speaking and knowledge of Diabetes and kidney disease. makes me want to listen to what you have to say..At 68 I have Type 2 Diabetes,High blood pressure, high cholesterol ,and depression.A big part of my depression is caused by not being able to find a physician who has the time or makes the effort to explain things to me..I live in a suburb of New York City surrounded by many of this country's top rated hospitals and I am still at a loss.I understand how much the medical field has changed over the years.Insurance issues, time constraints and now having to deal with Covid, your job is made even more difficult.I miss the days when you saw only one doctor who knew you so well and only referred you out to a specialist for an emergency situation.I appreciate that you take the time out of your hectic schedule to help us!Thank you,Linda
