Kenyatta (1973 Documentary)

Part Three of 'The Black Man's Trilogy; A biographical portrait of Kenya's first President Jomo Kenyatta and a case study of the "pitfall's of nationalism" as a political force in Africa narrated by Keefe 'Simba' West & Msindo Mwinyipembe , produced and directed by award winning filmmakers Anthony Howarth and David R. Koff.
"A treasure store of old stills, buried newsreels and contemporary interviews, supported by meticulous research and synthesized with the most sensitive acumen. A unique record of what colonialism means in human terms."-Judy Stone, San Francisco Chronicle
"A rare, penetrating and yet sympathetic look at African nationalism."-Peter Mwaura, The Standard (Nairobi)
"A solid historical document skewed, valuably, to a distinctive African point of view. By affording a forum for black leaders, past and present, it conveys the sense of an enduring dignity that no colonialist rationalizations can eliminate."-John J. O'Connor, The New York Times

I was eight years old when Jomo came home from detention. Vehicle registration plates KHA.....coincided with his release, I listened to those freedom songs first hand as they were sung by traditional Kikuyu men and women with spliced ears adorned with " nyori". Two years later,as a class three pupil, we were bussed to Langata Uhuru stadium in a KBS double decker bus to witness the raising of the new Kenya independence flag. And here I am now, seventy one years " young" and reliving it all over again. How lucky I am!!

@@simplejames9500 Indeed I saw it all. I still remember that night, my dad ( God bless his soul) and uncle were celebrating, they had bottles of Tusker beer that they couldn't have been allowed to consume under colonial rules, and they smoked " Clipper" brand cigarettes, the most expensive at the time ( google it). We kids were content with bubbly Coca-Cola and House of Manji biscuits.

The guys in the interviews sound so eloquent and relaxed I've found myself rewinding to listen to them again... I used to learn about Eliud Mathu, Joseph Murumbi, Oginga Odinga, Tom Mboya, and all those other great men in Kenyan History in primary school. Now I've seen what they all looked like and heard how they talked. Great job preserving this information.

Kenyatta fought along with other kenyans for kenya's independence, land and constitution...just 3 yrs after independence..he changed his stance n jailed his fellow comrades??? This is part of history to b remember...y??? They disagreed with his policies?? What did he want? Was he already into scandals n gobbling Kenya's wealth for himself?? This should b taught in schools so as the young generation understand the current tribal issues affecting the nation n thus make them bury the tension n live

David Koff researched and produced this series with his Tanzanian journalist-wife whose name I have forgotten. She is also the excellent narrator of the series (which can be found on KZread). It is a master piece of genuine journalism: presenting facts. Hence, the series much be watched in it's entirety. Kenyatta was a double-edged sword.for Kenya. Leading the country into a new era of independence and into his own personal wealth. - Which is quite well documented and so laying the foundation of Kenyans present day problems with corruption and impunity.

That was one of the many ad hoc songs composed by Gikuyu folk song musicians to serenade Mzee. They were many and varied during mzee's time. My all time favourite was "maendele Kenya" by Tanzania's Orchestra Lombe Lombe, a song I last in December 1977 and which was never played again by the VOK after Mzee rested. May this great son of Africa and the world rest in eternal peace.

Watching this video today just tells us that the main difference was between those who went to school and those who did not. I believe Jomo had very good intentions for the country. He had the country at heart but the opposition spoilt his moods. He had no chills after that. Just imagine if Oginga and Co. Worked together with Jomo through and through, we would've been far and saved lots of useless assassinations,

Your wrong,Kenyatta was the one who turned his back on those peoples saw him through this journey....he become very greedy & selfish....when he took this country the directions he took us from very beginning.....was wrong measure thanks why our offsprings will suffer the consequences. He brought tribal, racist & untill today Kenya belongs to one tribe the Kikuyu, the rest we are just nothing. It will come to an end on day, just like the way Rwanda got tired Kenya will someday.

You are wrong. They couldn't have worked together because they had very different views on what independence ought to have meant. Some people thought it ought to have meant the beginning of looting time. Others thought it ought to have been time to involve ordinary Kenyans. The more we read about Kenyatta, the more he turns out to have been a hollow tribalistic murderous leader whose hands are soaked in blood of other Kenyans who had alternative views on the development agenda for Kenya. He set particularly a poor foundation for Kenya. Leadership was equated with thievery and tribalistic mentality, a situation Kenya is yet to find it's way out of.

That's a poorly thought out comment! Are you justifying assassinations of leaders who held alternative views? Those who hold alternative views must be protected and provided with the space to express those views. That is the Hallmark of democracy. And state machinery ought not be illegally and unconstitutionally used to suppress those who hold alternative views. It is inexcusable and an act of cowardice to use the state to assassinate those who hold alternative views. Your views are worse than hogwash.
