Keep Dreaming - DreamConn Wireless Dreamcast Controller- Adam Koralik
Ойындар
It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the DreamConn! It's a bluetooth wireless controller for the Sega Dreamcast made by Chris from Greece. This is the V4, not the more common V2 or upcoming + model.
This is NOT the product by Retro-Bit.

Some points that I would like to add: 1. The unit that I sent to Adam had a smaller battery (2-3hrs tops) just for review purposes. The normal battery that comes with a DreamConn is larger and holds for 6-9+ hrs. 2. The VMU,Rumble Pak can be plugged/unplugged safely at any time regardless if the controller is powered-on. 3. With the nearly released "DreamConn+" all mentioned "glitches" (i.e VMU screen fading) are refined. Also, the 1st VMU will be used natively for saving, while keeping the 2nd virtual VMU (which hot-swaps with the R.P) Great work Adam! Keep Dreaming!

Chris... did you tell Adam before or when you sent the controller, that you sent him a [free] controller with a lower capacity battery? Had you done so, he wouldn't have bashed the running-time... knowing he was sent a nerfed controller. Also... how much money did you save by not sending a controller with the bigger battery? If you would have asked him to pay a small fee (for the larger battery)... he probably would have ("I" would have)! Was there full instructions for the controller you sent him included? Based on your comments above, it seems there was a LOT he didn't fully know about the controller before doing his review. That said... this is an incredible item you have made, Chris. I would like to know if plugging memory cards - including rumble packs WITH memory in them - will override the memory assigned to each of the respective slots? Also, I think maximum battery life would be expected, and desired by everyone. Are you using the highest capacity battery that will work in this controller? Up to 10 hours is great, but everyone knows that will decline over time. I would rather have longer run-time, rather than built-in memory... but not for the lack of internal memory, but a higher capacity battery - if possible. Adam... you've done a very informational video about this controller, given the info you were given (or not given). However... I condone your repeated use of foul language. Professionalism should always be top priority when doing videos - particularly about video games or hardware, as children may be watching! I would like to see an updated video, detailing the features of the controller with the new info provided by Chris... and WITHOUT the cussing! It doesn't matter if it's being done in a positive manner, and not out of anger... it's uncalled for.

Why the heck do you say all these in the comments and not directly to Adam PRIOR to the review is beyond me.

I realize this video and comment are pretty old, but that's pretty dumb honestly, you probably saved like $5-10 max sending him a worse controller, and doing so without telling him would naturally make him assume that is what the retail unit is like, which gives people a negative impression of your product, whatever you saved giving him a nerfed controller, you lost 5 fold from losing sales from potentially interested people
All i need now is a black Sega sports wireless controller
You know what I’d like to see? A VMU that uses SD cards! You could backup game saves to your laptop and download VMU games onto your laptop and play them on the VMU with no additional hassle! Also it would have an original Game Boy AC Adaptor input, as well as the slot for 2 CR2032 batteries.

I love this control. I have the version2, 2 years old but works great. I kept the UK box also. I wanna get a lightconn next. I been waiting for you to review this control dude for a couple years since you like Dreamcast. Cool you got one now. Shoutout Chris from Greece too for the dream conn.

Hey Adam you should do a keep dreaming episode talking about the DreamPi and the online games coming back. I know you dont care much about the online portion of the community but since its becoming such a big part of the Dreamcast community now i think the Dreamcast deserves that at least! Im sure PCWizard could help out
This is very cool, but definitely not worth 190$ for a controller, or 150ish for the service + shipping etc. way to much money.

Yeah, I'd prefer to buy a DIY install kit for my personal controller. I love my gorgeous red controller and VMU, definitely want to use it over Bluetooth, but almost $200 USD for a kit I can probably install myself is highway robbery.

I don’t know. I’m certainly not able to justify buying one of these myself, but given the fact that he kind of needs to cover the development costs over the course of a very short manufacturing run, I understand why it’s expensive. You can’t compare the price of this to something like an Xbox One controller, since Microsoft can sell millions of those
@sspagnola831

I understand as well, but no controller is worth that amount to me. I couldn't justify the cost, it's just too much for me.

i agree too expensive but i understand why the high price the dude probably put hundreds of hours work into it with all the r&d programming testing and it sounds like hes always trying to improve it
Even several years or decades before Retrobit introduced the Bluetooth & 2.4 Ghz wireless controller options for the Genesis and Saturn there were still wireless Infrared controllers available for the Genesis and Saturn, and yet the Dreamcast, in 2020, is still stuck in the dinosaur age with wired. That needs to change.
Yay more dreamcast content!!!!

aww man!! good video! love the Dreamcast! probably one of my favorite underrated consoles of all time and still play it every now and again today! oh and on another note the xbox one s models and X with the newer controllers that have the 3.5mm headphone jack built into all their controllers all have blu tooth technology in them and they connect using blu tooth with the S and X consoles as opposed to the launch model of the xbox one controllers that just used a wifi signal, and the new xbox one controllers have that tech in them so they work with all the old xbox one launch consoles as well that dont have blu tooth support.. again good informative video! this thing is cool!
Damn, what other console ever inspired such a devoted fan base, especially one that was short lived? I've had mine since its initial release date. Have had every major console ever released and it is the only one I never parted with or had any inclination of selling. My turbo express was another that I couldn't part with but it eventually crapped out and was too costly to repair/replace and still fetched a fairly high price in its not working condition. The dreamcast is so undervalued, mine is still as white as the day I bought it to. Have used 409 to wipe down the shell once every month or two and that's it.
What a coincidence Adam. I just ordered the Dreamconn and got a message saying I'd get the + model releasing at the end of March. Never knew you made a video about v4. Now I can play the legendary Shenmue 2 wirelessly.

Looking forward to some wireless options for my Sega systems from Retro But and hope the quality is there, we’ll wait and see. This Is a a great product but a bit on the pricey side, though that’s to be expected from a homebrew product. The best of luck to the maker :) Talking of Dreamcast though I today took delivery of Neo XYX LE, Fast Striker, Last Hope: Pink Bullets and Gunlord from TheBitSation. Happy to have them in my collection, but wish I’d got them first time around from NG Dev Team when they were out first time around as they would have been cheaper. Never the less I’m happy to have them :)

I bought a Rechargable Backlit VMU from Chris. It lights up and charges when powered from the console. I wonder how much battery life that would take from a Wireless Controller? See if you can get one of these Adam.
In complete agreement with you Adam. This seems like a great contender for the retrobit controller.... when ever that comes out. I would like to get my hand on a kit so I can DIM (Do it myself). That can make the price more reasonable on my budget.
Thankfully Retro Fighters now has a wireless Dreamcast Controller that is only 50 bucks and does not look like something Macgyver Made. Right now they are out of stock on them but Pre Orders are supposed to start mid November, and Stoneage Gamer will be selling them. Right now they only offer 2 colors, original White and Translucent Blue, I'm planning on getting the Blue.
My wired controller has been dying for some time now, (it behaves as if the cable is damaged, working at some angles but not others) so I've been waiting for the RetroBit ones to see if they're actually good. This is useful to know about though, if the RetroBit ones suck then I'll probably order one of these right away. I hope they're still around then.
Does it work on Xbox 360 using that daisy chain method you did years ago?
cool video game talk adam
Great video! Wish the charging port was a more common interface, like micro USB to USB A Male. That charging cable looks to not be so common.

Adam, do a review of the Dreamcast Live VS link cable that was recently released.
That fading of the VMU-Screen possibly can be fixed via an extra-capacitor... Anyway, great stuff! I'd like to get one, but what if I loose the dongle? O.o A great Battery/Akku would be cool as well (i.e. 3000mAh)! The PS2 also had that feature via Homebrew (IGR in OPL, etc.), or also via remote and possibly some other ways I don't remember...
@chrisdaioglou793
6 жыл бұрын
1. The VMU fading is already fixed with the new DreamConn+ 2. No worries! If you loose your dongle you can easily replace it. I have of course foreseen such a case & included a secret re-pair procedure. Any controller can be easily reconfigured with another dongle in case of failure or anything... 3. It could be done via an external battery module - I have been thinking of creating a Rumble+battery Pak that will plug at Slot 2 4. What about totally powering ON/OFF the console just from the controller (and more)?? Stay Tuned at the www.dreammods.net for my next project/hardware release..
Ehhh I think im good. Imma wait for the retrobit one. Hope that one is priced reasonably
You should make a video on the Lightconn wireless light gun that works on HDTVs through a reverse engineered wii sensor bar that was being made as well. There's a video on youtube already but doesn't have comments enabled. So I can't find any other info on it other than that. But for those of us that love HOTD2, we need something like that.

Unless I'm mistaken, it appears that the DreamConn+ will support VMU management via the app it shows on the website, so that should mean the ability to copy saves off the controller and onto a PC for sharing. That's an attractive feature that makes this a bit more tempting, but $190 shipped to the US is pretty steep. I'll be curious to see where Retro-Bit falls on this, and what features they bring to the table, as well as build quality.
@chrisdaioglou793
6 жыл бұрын
That is correct. With the DreamConn+, now there is the DreamConn+ Utility for Windows. With it, any plugged VMU can be transferred to/from a PC and also edited with the VMUExplorer (by Speud). Other features include VMU time set, VMU LCD & Sound test, Rumble Pak test and of course controller buttons test.

It's called nostalgia and it comes with a price,especially if it involves labor and modding.And if you want to modernise your nostalgia either you learn how to do it yourself or you pay someone that can do it for you.I made an arcade supergun that costed me 400 euros,if i wanted i could buy one for double.And yes i could play all those games for free on mame but i payed because of nostalgia and because i wanted all the metal slug games for the mvs.It doesnt make sense but i wanted it.And for the record the monthly salary for those of us that still work in greece is 650 euros so it was a steep amount of money for me to fork out.
Saw this on eBay, wondered if you'd ever seen a Dreamcast like this before?
I hope the retrobit reciever will let us use ps4 and the other retrobit controllers. I baught some brandnew DC Controllers for less than 10 euros two years ago.

Its a cool product and no doubt a lot of time, money and thought went into him making it. I bet he wished it was just advertised a bit more before the new Retro Bit controllers were announced, he would have probably shifted a few more. I like that it's original controllers and who knows what kind of crap retro bit will put out in the market place. But the price is what kills it for me. If it was $99 for a full build then that would work, as you can pick up controllers on ebay for $10 in good condition. I also picked up boxed Dreamcast controllers in mint condition in a hard off a few weeks ago in Tokyo, 11 of them all for under $4 each (tip of the hat to you for the hard off tip).
Looks awesome but to reach for my blood!
Can you Plz do a game room tour
Would love it but the price is too much. Would it be possible to get a 'bare bones' version without all the extra features. Just want wireless
It would not be hard to put USB ports on the Dreamcast charger controller. It would just have to be on the entire time. You would just have to do a modification on the outside of the Dreamcast and then on the inside you would have to only use two wires the black wire on ground and usually on the USB it's the red wire that would be connected to the 5 volt Source on the power supply in the Dreamcast.
I'm sure a lot of love and care went into designing it with all the awesome VMU integration features and virtual VMU, but the cost is WAY too high to justify it. I would probably pay that for 2 controllers though.
This might be worth the price alone just to get rid of that awful wire on the player’s side of the controller. I love the DC controller, but that wire always drove me nuts. Great video bruh!
Ellas ! Ole !
