I just found a copy on ebay. I might take a chance on it.

I'm building up my Dreamcast collection, and this video was a big help. I want to play real games, but often the imports are way cheaper than the American versions. I know between the two Power Stone games I'll save at least $140.

I was gifted a Dreamcast recently and was looking for info on bootdisks that can force VGA mode on games and your video was the best thing I could find! Thanks a lot for the help, your videos are very educational, can't stop watching them!

Thank you for this helpful video, Adam. After 20 years without a Dreamcast console I missed out all the new possibilities of my all time favorite console.

It's Q4 2017 and I still found this video extremely helpful! I'm planning on importing Headhunter + Shenmue 2 (EU) and Federation vs Zeon DX (JP) and the biggest question I had was regarding saving- It's a huge relief to know I can save everything all on one VMU. I was also intrigued to learn about Hanzo and Codebreaker. Thanks for the assist!

Just bought my first Dreamcast after lusting for one since they first came out. It’s an ntsc - j unit that’s been converted to run Australian voltage, and now I’ll be able to play PAL games thanks to this video and code breakers ❤

I've seen every single Keep Dreaming episode and I find this one to be one of the best episodes in all the series. So many doubts are banish now. Thanks Adam enjoy your traveling !

+Leon Hastings Natively no, but there's a disc you can burn and run on the Dreamcast that will convert your North American Shenmue save so that it will work.

Adam Koralik hey this may be a dumb question but when playing a Japanese game on American Dreamcast through boot disk will it be in English ?

Finally found a Dreamcast out in the wild today, along with a Keyboard, both where complete in the box, with 1 controller, and a sample disc that was scratched beyond repair, so I'm hunting for games now, so this video could not have come at a better time for me :-) thanks man!

Dino Crisis works with VGA. Use the Codebreaker disc to have it output in vga, then whenever an fmv starts, the screen will just turn off or go black. Press start to skip the fmv and the game will load back up in vga mode.

I just want to say thank you for this! I picked up a Japanese import of Shenmue a few months back and getting it to load was spotty at best. It's loading perfectly now and I had hours of enjoyment last night thanks to you pointing this out! As for burning this disk, I recommend a program called imgburn if you're using a version of Windows after XP.

AdamKoralik I don't remember adding any patches to it. It seems to run without any hitches for me and I'm still running Windows 7 at the moment (though I am looking to build a PC over the next year and it looks like I'll be going with 8, even though I'm not crazy about the interface on it).

took me years and years to FINALLY do this, but i had a few speedbumps on the way, the site you linked gave me the file, but for some reason, it wouldn't work, i ended up using like 4 cdr's until i looked around and found a rar file, i used that, and BAM! it works like you asked, thanks Adam, now i don't have to use that other disc loader anymore, i had the one that had the arrow/cd screen thing, but that was before i knew about the code breaker. thanks again, now i can start delving more into imports.

Ok so what your saying is you had to burn just the rar. file containing the 2 cdi. images onto the CD-R? Am I reading that right?

no, i needed to extract the RAR file get the correct file from the extraction (it's the small file) and then it worked properly.

Innovation makes a converter as well. I bought it at Electronics Boutique when I purchased the PAL version of Shenmue 2

I had no idea about the DC-X (which I obviously have), but I also haven't had my DC connected with VGA in years. I also only have a couple of imports. Now I know if I switch to VGA I have to get another boot disc. Great info.

Thank you! I actually just got my first Dreamcast yesterday!!

Note that the codebreaker is also great when it comes to playing US or JP games on an EU console because it will make the games run at 60hz. I was playing my JP Under Defeat original using some other boot disc and it would run at 50hz.

​@PapiFed oh that's Utopia. Dude says not to use it but I'm not exactly sure why not? I mean there's ethical concerns since it was made with a leaked DC Dev Kit, so maybe that?

Tried the disc thing and it didn't work. In the end I just ended up finding a reproduction seller online - Nightwing Video Game Reproductions. I was very lucky he did a copy of this obscure Japanese-only game called Lack of Love. Super interesting game and was glad to finally play it properly since emulation didn't work either

SF2 import was unplayable over DCX and Utopia, but runs perfect over Codebreaker, thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the video. I just recently bought Shenmue 1 and 2 Japanese versions and couldn't get the first game to boot with Utopia but Shenmue 2 worked fine so I thought the game might have been damaged. I just tried the Codebreaker disk you recommended and Shenmue 1 booted perfectly. For those wondering you only need to burn the codebreaker image not the Loader image.

Thanks for info.CD-RW have only 700 mb of memory and since i burned Codebreaker loader and not Codebreaker image I am screwed up.The files takes too much space on disc to burn both of them.I am using OS X El Capitan as a operating system.And Disc unity won't clear my disc from any data for some reasons.Can you tell me what should I do?

Just what I need, thanks Adam.

You're right about saving and loading save states for the same game from different regions: I had Mr Dirller US first and when I played Mr Driller EU it couldn't read the US save state and I was 'forced' to overwrite the US save state to be able play Mr Driller EU and create a EU save state.

A code breaker disc came with my European copy of Shenmue II. I must of gotten lucky. It works great with no issue. I would recommend it. Thanks for the video.

I used Utopia for years to play my imports, never had any problems on my PAL Dreamcast. Worked flawlessly

I just got in the mail today a Japanese import copy of Street Fighter 3 third strike. I'm glad I checked out this video I actually still have my codebreaker now that I know about this I'm glad I kept it.

Very informative video. I can't seem to go anywhere else for Dreamcast videos because they recommend face palm products. DC-X seemed to be great until I saw that it disabled VGA support. I ended up getting the Kuro and it seems like I got the last one because they were sold out after I bought it. It is so simple looking but everything looks amazing.

Thanks for making this my mom bought me Japanese versions of shenmue 1 and Daytona usa 2001 and I've been wanting to play them. It's not her fault she didn't know. I still like them though extends my collection beyond North America.

Thank you for recommending Codebreaker. I know that I've been using Utopia Boot Disc and I hated using it but for a while it was the only one I could find and it played my Puyo Puyo Fever game so I was happy until I got my VGA box and it doesn't work with VGA. Now I shall throw away and use Codebreaker so I can play Puyo Puyo in VGA Wonderland.

cool vid Adam. You forgot the old school 30-second disc swap method (or maybe you mention it in the comments). I was an early import DC gamer and it was the method of choice that didn't involve soldering a chip. It required a rubber band to keep the lid switch back but I Imagine it's an easy technique for those with a dead clock battery and no Gameshark CDX or other swap disk.

My dreamcast has instaled a MOdchip, just to play imports. A friend of mine have some of those modchips. I run my PAL , JAP or US discs directly in my NTSC-U Dreamcast, whitout the need of any disc.

Funny intro with the mention of being four years late :P I really like the setup with the monitor to the side. Thanks for saying removing a controller while the Dreamcast is on is a bad idea; I had no clue 😨 I've heard the beep when I add a second controller, but usually the game just restarts. You said you burned Code Breaker on a disk. Can the Dreamcast play regular burned disks? In that case, is the Utopia boot disk just to play self-published burned disks? One method I'd suggest you mention before the 'perfect' one would be buying a Japanese/European Dreamcast haha

Great video! I've actually been using something made specifically for the Dreamcast by Innovation called Super Game Converter. I've had good success with it and it does allow you to select the video output before you put in your imported game. However, I'm not sure if it can force games like Code Breakers can.

Hi Adam! Look I want to say this was a great and helpful video you put up, even after all these years. However the only problem with it is that the link for the CodeBreaker is now broken. Iso Zone no longer exist as they have been sued, so is there any other alternates? Is the code breaker CD only for one console or for any? I say this because the only one I can find online is categorized for Sony PlayStation. Perhaps a new link or maybe a new video on this situation might help?

Is this suppose to work on any Dreamcast? I tried to burn on a CD but it's asking my to insert Code Breaker disk and wait a few second and hit start but it will tell me "this is not a code breaker dc" don't know what I'm doing wrong

It's worth noting that if your going to burn the Code Breaker disc, you could also burn the GameShark CDX disc that's been hacked to use normal memory cards/VMUs instead of the "CDX card".

Very informative video, thanks for the input Adam. Still don't have an import enabler disc although I own games from Japan and the US, so this comes in very handy. Especially since I was going get the DC-X disc at first, however... now I guess to take a look for that Cheats'n'Codes disc first. You may put in the burned disc of Code Breaker for only a few seconds but since I'm still worried about the laser, it's safer to give GD-ROMs a try.

hazy33 Well... one indicator would be that many people talked about dying lasers on the net and even Adam did mention that problem in various videos. That's why I also leave homebrew off my Dreamcast.

I just got seaman big box that was was brand new. But it is japanese version. The link didn't have it download. Is there somewhere else to download it? Great video and now I know that the microphone and speaker will work for my america dreamcast.

I will say back in 2000 I purchased Capcom vs SNK Japanese version and was able to play it on my Dreamcast

I couldn't be doing with swapping discs.. Guess I'm too lazy! I sold my PAL DC and bought a Jpn clear blue cased DC with a uk powersupply. It plays everything! Oh and it's blue!! :-D

Recently picked up a japanese dreamcast, due to how amazing the condition is and am loving that games are cheaper.. while also being in incredible condition. But RPGs etc, would be nice to pick up english versions if I find them in the wild. This will do the trick! appreciated.

Just to be 100% certain, are all of these discs region free?

I think some games have the same (or compatible) save files across regions--for example I remember loading a US PSOv2 character in the PAL v2 version (granted I couldn't go online without dealing with the SN/AK mess), but I think one game region can read the other's save. I don't know if this works with any other game, though, and it's been a while so my memory might be a bit fuzzy.

How well does Guilty Gear X work with these methods?

Not every game outputs VGA, even with Code Breaker or any other boot disc. There are lists online, but here's a few: Skies of Arcadia (PAL); WWF: Attitude; Soul Fighter; MTV Skateboarding; King Of Fighters: Evolution; The Ring: Terror Realm;

So I have a bit of a dilemma. I am trying to build an arcade cabinet with house of the dead 2 on dreamcast. Like you mentioned in your video HOTD2 is the one exception for the light guns. Other than buying Madcatz controllers, is there any other way to play the game with the DC gun? Would I need to buy HOTD2 from a different region? I love your channel! Keep putting up these killer videos!

Unless you region mod it, yes. Though honestly the official Sega light guns aren't very good. I'd recommend the Mad Catz one and the NA copy.

Thanks for the info. That's probably the route I am going to go. The Madcatz controllers are hard to find around these parts. I am scouring the internet for a good pair to modify so they will look realistic.

That Code Breaker you have looks from the menus like the european Xploder Cheat Disc I have. And does exactly the same thing. So maybe you can get your hands on one of those, instead of using a burned disc. ;-)

Great video, Adam! The one thing you should've mentioned is that the disc swap method(The one where you take out the spring) is a horrible, horrible idea.

The display setting is saved on the region code. So if you have NTSC Dreamcast, it will play the European DC games on NTSC.
