Keep Dreaming - CF Card Modded Sega Dreamcast Review - Adam Koralik

Ойындар

It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing a Sega Dreamcast that has been modified to be both region free, and to host a CF Card. The purpose is to allow it to load Dreamshell which adds all sorts of extra features, including the ability to rip games to the card, and play games off the card without a disc being required.

The CF card wasn't just chosen for reliability. This CF mod is connected to the "G1" bus on the Dreamcast, which is basically just IDE / ATAPI. This is the same IDE bus that the GD drive hooks up to, so the drive is the Master device, and the CF card is Slave. I did the first tests (AFAIK) with an IDE HDD as Slave on the Dreamcast, then made some adapter PCBs (which I named the "G1-ATA" adapter). I then sent a few adapters to Mr SWAT, who then added IDE device support to Dreamshell. ;) (although you can just solder an IDE cable to the test pads on the underside of the motherboard, which allows you to retain the use of the GD drive.) The CF card or IDE HDD is way faster than using an SD card hooked up to the serial port (which is how Dreamshell originally worked.) But yes, unfortunately Dreamshell might never reach 100% compatibility with games, as it has to load a code "stub" into RAM, to redirect the syscalls that games normally use to read from the GD drive. Dreamshell does play many games though, has faster loading times for most of them (if they can use DMA), and it's just convenient. Depending on the game, that stub may get overwritten, or there are other incompatibilities with how the game is trying to access the "disk" data. But, there is one last Bastian of security on the Dreamcast to crack - it has a "checksum" algorithm, which makes it very hard to modify the Dreamcast BIOS code. (Even the region-free hacks, and the Dreamshell bootloader BIOS were done with a lot of trial-and-error, AFAIK?) If that BIOS checksum fails, the main "HOLLY" chip in the Dreamcast locks out access to the G1 port, so neither the GD drive nor Slave IDE device can be accessed until the console is reset again. Once that final checksum is bypassed though, it will mean 100% custom BIOS images that would work with ALL games from HDD or CF card, and have custom boot menus etc.

I had the chance to take a look at the DC you sent to my office with Adam when he was here. Love what you´ve done with it and it bugs me i didn´t think of it... Ha ! Credit where credit is due, awesome work! I must agree with Adam on one point, with the whole setup of Dreamshell it might not be so trivial for the average user to get it working. And i hope at some point Dreamshell reaches the point of almost perfect compatibility. But as a pre-setup mod, it´s an really great solution. I can see you selling tons of premodded DC´s this way :-) Cheers

I'm actually the creator of this mod, which is indeed for the most part just a nicer looking variation of the standard Dreamcast IDE mod. It's not very hard to pull off from a technical standpoint if you have all the neccessary info however, to achive a somewhat professional looking result you need some rather serious crafting skills and that's why I thought it might be a good idea to offer this as paid service to the community. Also please note that I'm planning to donate a small amount of the revenue to the creators of the DreamShell OS to encourage further development on the software side of the mod.

Hey, firstly congrats on the mod ! I have tinkered with the DC´s G1/Ide Port in the past but never really wen´t that far out to find a visually pleasing solution as you did. I am sure in the way you did it, you will find costumers who really appreciate it and i congrulate you on your effort to donate parts of the income to the Dreamshell Dev Team! Btw. wouldn´t it be easier if the mod get´s enough costumers to do high quality 3d printed top chassis or resin prints or similar? Would ease your workload i guess

I have one of those serial SD card adapters that can be attached to the port that was originally used by stuff such as the NGP Link Cable. Since @ElectronAsh pointed out this CF mod is basically using the IDE connector that's also enabling the GD-ROM drive to actually work, I wonder how easily that mod could be done by essentially everyone with a bit of skill and mind. After all GD-ROM drives aren't exactly known for their stability, especially when using burned discs.

Sounds like they use the PS2 memory card save data icons for game icons is all. That is a great idea that they used those to select games. I remember back in 2001 when I owned my first PS2 and was deleting save files from it, some of the icons would make a dying animation haha.

Hello Adam! I wanted to thank you for the fact, that, as an austrian, I had to get the information about Jan´s Service from an american on his YT channel :D In the meanwhile, Jan has done the modification on my Dreamcast (so he is doing this job also, not only selling modded ones) in a absolute excellent way. My console was painted matt black by me before (in a kind of a Gamecube style - it has gone yellow over the years, and I decided to to the painting to cover that), and Jan has done not only a very precise job in cutting out the slot for the CF but also had taken very good care of the painting, to not scratch or damage it. I can recommend Jan´s service to anyone - Jan does nice work and the service is very fair in terms of pricing! - HARDLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Greetings from austria! :)

Get a GDEMU knock off on eBay, just make sure it's a version 5.15b not 5.15, cuz the " b " us a exactly and in some ways better than the original GDEMU. With shipping to Canada, plus I got a top ( not a little cup thing inside ) 3D Printed tray ( for easy swapping of SD cards, I have 3 of them 64gb each ). It came to about 150.00 for everything!!! The games are ALL downloadable online, even PlayStation Bleencast games and MODS all in CDI format and GDMemu is free to download, it does all the work for you, no need to change anything, so easy. I'm a computer guy, techie, build, rebuild, repair and teach some basics as well, but, I know nothing about this kind of stuff, learned about ALL of it online and all the stuff and software needed to make it all work flawlessly ( 3 softwares, that's it, and all the games you want downloaded ) you also need 3 ( 2 is recommended, but I never do bare minimum ) 1000k resistors, I got from local guy here in New Brunswick, Canada. He only wanted 1 dollar for all 3, I gave him $5, cuz he dropped them off on his way out somewhere, so he gave me 3 extras!! I saved everything, including easy instructions, which I made easier and pictures of stuff, like where exactly to put the resistors on the board. I can hook you up with everything and Information required if you want it. Oh yea, the resistors are for heat, cuz with the GDRom drive poped out, it gets hotter,CA lot, but I've never had an issue at all and have played quite a bit, longest yet was 15 hours machine was on, not steady playing that long, paused to go have a smoke, eat, washroom, text and calls!!!

I've been wanting to do something like this for a while, but documentation on the IDE mod is very sparse on the interwebz. The IDE mod is nice because the DC has an IDE header on the PCB, and CF cards are IDE compatible. So for maybe $20 in supplies plus the memory card, you can get functionality close to a GDEMU, with slightly worse compatibility. If your Austrian friend could give you(us) any links to a guide for this, or even just the pin-outs for the IDE pads, that would be great!!! Thanks Adam!

Adam, you deserve a medal (or KZread button) for your continued videos on keeping the dreamcast alive. I value all the SD-card, USB-drive and CF-card mods that you present. But at the end of the day (and with two faulty Dreamcast in my possesion) I just wish there was a new GD-rom replacement as that is the weakest part of the hardware that is the root of why most machines die. Damn you Sega, why the hell did you let fucking Hitachi supply your disk-drives!? I just want to play my physical game disks on my Dreamcast on my TV like it was 2000 again. I have actually invested in a second hand PS2 system and games now to play some Sega games on - the very console I resisted when I got my Dreamcast. The PS2 just seems indestructable compared to the Dreamcast.

Man a modded Dreamcast with similar features of a modded Original Xbox with being able to Rip and play Ripped games. Also having this along with the GDROM drive is huge because you can use either the CF Card or the original game disc. Also with the games its compatible with it saves on the wear and tear on the GDROM itself. Just like the Original Xbox with its DVD drive.

Hey Man. Ice watched a lot of your videos and KUDOS to you, your gaming insite in great!!! Now, as for the CF Card Dreamcast you acquired, pretty cool, yes, give credit where credit is due for sure, but I got a GDEMU version 5.15b, yes it is a knock off from the original one, but same and better in some ways. Same because the 5.15b has identical components like chipsets and everything and is upgradable just like the original one, unlike the 5.15 version ( not 5.15b ) that is completely different from the original, wrong components and everything, really cheap stuff and tends to have a lot of issues with a lot of games and regions ( which the " b " is region Free ) and it plays everything perfect and any size SD card up to 128gb so far, I haven't tried higher yet because I only buy real cards, not knock offs ). The reason the 5.15b is better than original is because it has a way better slot on the board. Ice yet to have an issue with an SD card, probably because I only buy original and I only use 64gb cards, the 128 worked, but I was leery of it. I have each of my 3 SD cards saved in GDMemu format in its own folder, on my external HDD, just in case a card ever does take a hike on me. Love the GDEMU, it plays anything, all my NTSC, PAL and Japanese format market games ( not many of the Japanese ones, not a fan of the anime style games or anything else actually ) it also plays all the CDI Bleemed ( Bleencast ) and bootable PlayStation games and all my MODS, 90% of them are Half-life mods for the Dreamcast. But all that being said, having a CF card ( very old tech ) protruding from the side of my machine would drive my OCD crazy, plus I would look at it as killing my Dreamcast by dismembering and mangling it!! Still have my GDRom put away with all my discs, like a litterally 2 minute job to put back in, but why, for the nostalgia of that old grinding noise from discs, ha ha ha, am I right??? I didn't bother putting a whole power supply unit in for the heat, I just put 1 1000k resistors on the bus for heat, works perfectly, someone from England online said you only need 2, but I went with 3, that's me!! I also got a 3D Printed top tray, not one of those cheapie cup looking things, got the top one, so, open the lid and there it is, pop your different cards in and out, has a cable that runs to the GDEMU card slot and a 3D printed piece comes with it for the next game button, which I never use accept for when I'm using Codebreaker to skip to the game codes I want!! All in all, that was a very cool idea, but I think the GDEMU far superior to that and GDMemu makes it all awesome, that's all, and no need for Dreamshell!!!! Thanks for showing us that though, it was really cool to see!!!

I concur. The 4K 30fps console meme is dumb. If I were younger and couldn't afford a PC that handles 4K60fps ... well, I probably wouldn't care about Sega if I were that young, to be honest. Also, I'm not seeing anything about the processor on their page, and consoles tend to be beefier on the CPU than on the GPU. spartanconsole.com/

Can you use an NTSC power cable with a Japanese Dreamcast here in the United States? Just got one of these (CF Modded Dreamcast) in from Jan. Thanks.

  • @AdamKoralik

Yes, though a stepdown converter is recommended. While it will work, over time the voltage difference will slowly chew away at the PSU.

Disc verification is very important... especially when buying second hand!! I bought Star Ocean The Last Hope for XBox360 second hand. It's only a cheap game, but I started playing, and thought better rip the discs to the hard drive and play from there, as that would put less stress on the optical drive. The third disc would give an error at 80%!! So I contacted the seller, which is one I had bought things from many times before, and they sent me a second complete game free, and it was in even better condition than the first one I received. If I hadn't had decided to pass the entire game onto the drive, I might have reached that point very near the end of the disc, and encountered the error, which would have been very frustrating!! It wouldn't have been much of a loss moneywise, as it was only like €5 with shipping, but it's the endless cliffhanger issue!! Since then, I make images of all my games to make sure they are readable from beginning to end. For my Playstation games for example, I make an image at low speed on my computer, as the console itself doesn't have a solution otherwise.

I bought the dreamshell that you can easily find on ebay (it comes with a pen drive look like device) and I must say I'm not very happy with it. I should had done more research about it. The ideia is great with this version since you do not have to modify anything but....you really can't play much here. I use it only to run other consoles emulators. I really wanted to use it to play that expensive games that I cannot afford right now and to avoid using burned cd's. Those things really break the laser.

10:54 Actually, there's nothing harder about ripping Wii U discs because, with Wii U homebrew, you can rip Wii U discs to your computer over Wi-Fi, so you just need to know what you're doing (and there's plenty of tutorials on how to do this)

Maybe you need to upgrade the software on the cd-rom and on the sd card that you put on the adaptor. I was having the same issue as well but I only needed to upgrade the software AND changing the type of sd card I was using. This is very important as well.

Not really sure have to check later on how many i have at the moment on an SD. on my saturn i had like 150 games on it and i think on my dreamcast around that number 2 but i'm not 100 percent sure. I know that i still have room to spare on my dreamcast and that i could add another 20 games or so. Most dreamcast games are less then a gigabyte so probably around 180 - 200 depending on what games you're installing on the SD
