Happy 15th birthday to the Sega Dreamcast! Yes, believe it or not, it's been 15 years to the day since the North American launch. Today is of course September 9th 2014, and we're celebrating in style! What I'll be discussing, courtesy of Ziming at the Shenmue-Dojo, is the GDEmu.
It can best be described as a "flash card" for the Dreamcast. Happy birthday to Sega's final console, gone but not forgotten!

In 2 months we'll be celebrating the 20th birthday of the Dreamcast. CRAZY!
I so want one of these bad boys! Technically speaking the GDEmu does EXACTLY that . It emulates the GD rom drive.
Just finished playing a few rounds of Soul Calibur in honor of 15 years of greatness. Remarkable how well still holds up. Happy Birthday Dreamcast. You'll always be my favorite.

Congrats Dreamcast! 9/9/99 will forever be the coolest date for a console launch!! I've seen this mod to play games from a SD card on a Model 2 Panasonic 3DO, so I'm very happy there's one now for the DC! I hope its done for all disc based consoles because eventually it'll be the only way to play these games on real hardware (no emulation) + with reduced load times.
Happy birthday Dreamcast!

Its amazing how much you can do with a dreamcast. There's so much I didn't know about and I'm a huge fan of the console
Actually, the name is accurate because the board is emulating the GD rom drive. Hence the name, GDEmu. Great Video btw Adam!

Too bad I didn't celebrated the Dreamcast's 15th anniversary at the exact day. I did of course celebrated it a day later by playing Sonic Adventure on my Dreamcast and played through Sonic's story nonstop and beaten it in 3 and a half hours. I could've played the whole entire game nonstop but I and my Dreamcast wouldn't be able to handle that long of a gameplay. Nice video Adam. Happy 15th birthday SEGA Dreamcast.
I remember that date as a 15 year old kid.... 9/9/1999. They need a new Dreamcast.
Hey there, Adam. Great video by the way. I've also owned a Dreamcast and I loved it, along with Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.
*HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SEGA DREAMCAST!* \o/ Again Adam, brilliant video! And picking DUX first... nice. I'm lucky to own a DC with that 1 on its back but maybe it'd be smart to get another one with broken GD drive to modify it? At least it'd keep discs safe AND one could take the system to buddies without risking damage to the media. Anyways, nice one as always!

i remember this old video where this guy modified a dreamcast to be region free, and have a SD card slot in the side of the console, and he had it made to work without removing the GD-ROM, so all discs still worked, also had a switch to go from stock to region free bios on the side of it aswell
Man great video and the gdemu looks awesome.

Happy 15th Birthday,Sega Dreamcast (US release}¡I am happy for every Dreamcast fan over the world.I've had it since it came out in England.Love live the Dreamcast!My first and favourite game on the system was Chu Chu Rocket.Still play it today.
I sure do miss the days of me & my friends playing games such as; Power Stone, Space Channel 5, ChuChu Rocket, Sonic Adventure (1 & 2), Marvel vs Capcom 2, Crazy Taxi, Jet "Grind" Radio, House of the Dead 2, and Samba de Amigo just to name a few. I still have my Dreamcast so I don't really miss it.
Dreamcast still young, happy birthday Sega DC
I NEED THIS RIGHT NOW!!!
There's a pretty good thread on assembler games that talks about no onlt the gd-emu but a couple of other similar devices that are in the works. One guy has one that works with usb so you can use a flash drive or an external hdd that you can order currently and there are two more in the works. It's a very exciting time for the dreamcast community
A great tribute to a great console!

Well happy birthday Dreamcast. It's hard to think 15 years ago my friends and I waited in line for the 9-9-99 launch. It was my Junior year in high school, and now I'm 32...oh geez we're old! (@_@)
I wanted one of these for a long time
that looks so awesome
These are technically "Disc Drive Emulators" they don't emulate the games as such, but they emulate the drive, they essentially mount the image and trick the console into thinking the image is a real disc, the emulator then tries to emulate the functions of a real drive, the console then reacts as if it were a real drive. I think that is why it is called gdemu.
Great video as always man. I just checked my Dreamcast, she's got a little 2 in a circle. Bummer... Was hoping to talk to my Seaman.

Forgot to say, I bought one & have it so will be doing a little video of it soon & it works great.
9-9-99, MTV Music Awards with Chris Rock. Made a Will Smith New York Yankees joke. Can't believe it's been 17 years. I remember when I was a kid and the Nintendo turned ten years old. From a little kids perspective ten years felt like the equivalent of a life time. And then like nothing the US Dreamcast is 17 years old and the Nintendo over 30.
Very interesting! As someone with a DC that has a laser that may be on its way out, I might consider this.
Oh man, this is awesome. Can't believe I didn't know about it. I wonder if it's possible to load a custom bios with some kind of boot menu.
WOW, next year the dreamcast will be 20 !
Awesome. Got a little #1 in my circle! Maybe someday, if the planets all align, I'll snatch this. For now I'm working on my Xbox collection, but I will be awarding the DC on it's 16th official birthday (Japanese release date it what I mark it by) with a copy of MGS Bleem!
My Dreamcast GD-ROM drive is dying for a while now and I think I need this thing once it's available again.
very cool video, happy birthday ^_^

I'm sure you can leave the 01 folder empty, so it boots to the dashboard. There is also a new board out called USB-GDROM Controller & this has a menu, region free support for all games & supports up to 2tb USB device (HDD, pen drive or sd card). Only thing it doesn't do is CDI yet, so homebrew is a no go as of yet.
GDEMU was a perfect birthday gift for the Dreamcast. I'm not a collector, so now in 2021 I'm not sure if I want a Dreamcast with GDEMU built in or if I'll only wait for a China handheld which can run Dreamcast games well.
Was doing some further research and apparently there is a gui that was released for it but taken down to get out bugs but basically allows you to choose game from menu selecting with dpad instead of doing the whole switch thing blindly. Plus in the menu it will display the name of the game. Also maker of gdemu said hes going to try to get these out faster in batches to keep up with demand.
How the heck did I miss this.
Happy 15th Dreamcast!
Thanks for the video. I need to get one of these quicklike. I've been wanting to play my Dreamcast for a while, but it doesn't have a working optical drive.
I loved the Dreamcast. I played many hours of PSO
Happy Dreamcast Day!

I am looking forward to celebrating the 15th Anniversary of the European/UK release of the Sega Dreamcast tomorrow!I cannot wait (14/10/1999).
Happy 16:9.
I was surprised you didn't mention the Dreamcast SD card adapter in this video. I think it may be better because it doesn't need to be connected inside, you still have your original GD drive, it bypasses the region lock, and it has a menu to launch your games.
@AdamKoralik
10 жыл бұрын
The Dreamcast SD card adapter is so vastly inferior it's not even worth mentioning to be honest.
The 3DO also has something like this with USB I believe. Also, there is a PS1 version of this sorta that plugs into the parallel port (Gameshark/PAR plugs into it also) of the older models in the works. The problem with the DC is that the GD-Rom drives go out quite often. All that constant lens moving back and forth wears it out (not to mention it is noisy and clunky to begin with). I had to play different games to get mine to read Shenmue 2 PAL version again one time. Ever since I put a bunch of white lithium grease on the gears 3 years ago, haven't had a problem since. I highly suggest using lithium grease on all disc based consoles for the gears and slides.
This is cool. The dreamcast really needed something like this. Cool product review, knowing that it's not the finished article means I don't have to feel too bad about missing out on one. My hope is that enterprising folks out there will take notice of the demand that this has tapped into and endeavour to continue where the GDemu left off to come up with a new version that is more complete and more polished. a 1-2 terrabyte drive would be ideal for this as it would have enough storage and the lack of moving parts would give it more longevity than a HDD only problem SSD is too expensive atm for 1 TB. I think a reasonable compromise could be a board with a SCSI port on the bottom and a SATA port on top so that a HDD can be connected instead. I would rather put 1 TB+ worth of games under the hood and not have to disassemble it to swap SD cards. Even better would be if the could put a USB port on the top so that a person could open the CD lid plug in a drive or a computer and transfer games back and forth. All the same I'm glad someone has found a way to replace the GD drive with more modern storage media to run DC games.
Great Video
Enjoyed this. Good to see the Dreamcast still getting attention. It's the most underrated console ever but SEGA really have themselves to blame for that.
Great video!

Wow, that's awesome. Looks like an FPGA implementation, but wired up to the disc bus, so in other words, a mod kit on crack. Very interesting, also a great video.
Amazing!!!
+Ron M Yeah, that annoyed me too. But I'm nursing the flu currently, I just didn't have the strength to reshoot anything. I barely made it through this video.
I had painted my console chameleon with a green l.e.d, I need one of these GDEmu ASAP !
The name is accurate. It emulates the workings of the GD drive for the system.
Dang, preorders are all out, hope there will be a new bsatch within a year :)
Happy birthday Dreamcast
I just ordered one for Saber RIder development and testing.
I too hope that in some time someone devises a way to use a Solid State drive in place of the SD card for more storage capability and include a menu. This in of itself is a very good start. Sad that they're not for sale at the moment... Thanks for showing us this, Adam!

AdamKoralik Also, i remember watching a video a while back about an SD card that plugs in the back of the Dreamcast but games didn't run as well? Laggy and the sound was screwed i think? I take it all games run perfect in the manner? Can't complain about fast loading times. I love playing Soldier Of Fortune on the Dreamcast and the loading times are awful!
Really Cool!
Happy Birthday Dreamcast! XD
I like your program I hope that Sega back
Nice video, I read that someone made a simple menu to select the GDI's. It is still a Beta, but it works ;)
What a great video to commemorate the 15th b day of the dreamcast! You raised some excellent points too. Would be great if you could hook up a USB or SATA HD to it. (Like a soft modded wii) Maybe have a custom OS to navigate the ISOs instead of pressing that button. But yea, its still a VERY impressive piece of hardware.

Everyone, good news! =) Finally! I have 2 PAL dreamcasts: one is works, second one not. I tried to fix it, but its not easy for me. This way is much more better then fixing GDrom or any other (like dreamshell or screwing dead laser). Dont know when but I must buy this thing. Thank goodness, both of my consoles have number "1". Thank you Adam for such great news!

There is also the usb gd-rom controller made by mnemo. It is basically the same but it supports up to 2tb devices flash drives and hard drives also the images do not have to be renamed to disc gdi or cdi can keep their names. Also there is a menu system and you have the option to have the usb inside or outside the dreamcast. outside usb you have to cut the opening for it.

+Jessey Lawson Adam is a great collector and a dreamcast fan in the user's perspective, but isn't very much into the ripping and modding scene or the technical side. He for example continues to feed the myth that burned games will harm your console, when that's not entirely true.
@AdamKoralik
8 жыл бұрын
+RaenYrtham Depends on the rip. The majority of rips out there are bad as they've been floating around for years, later ones are far less problematic.
@tbb033
8 жыл бұрын
Depends on the quality of the burn far more than the rip on whether it will wear down a drive prematurely.
@cybernitemusic
8 жыл бұрын
+tbb033 actually the data distribution on the disc matters the most. Earlier rips were all over the place and would stress out the laser to the point where it would stop functioning. Later people got smarter and laid out the data on the disc better, so the laser wouldn't have to work so hard. In fact some claim to have organized it even better than the original gdroms... That's impressive...
@cybernitemusic
8 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it's not for sale anymore :( dunno when it will be again...
so can any dreamcast game be loaded into the sd card and played, for example a custom marvel vs. capcom 2 (the music and color palettes are modified)
Yay, my Dreamcast is also Revision 1! Also, it has yellowed like hell over the years! I guess i need to try that retr0bright product people talk about.
