    What you're saying makes good sense. I did a DCHDMI a couple days ago for a friend of mine and every resolution gave me a great impression when I tried it out. I think someone who doesn't have an MClassic and just uses the DCHDMI in 960p or 1080p would be satisfied, and so would the person who has an MClassic and uses it at 480p. HDMI Dreamcast is a win no matter how you use it. Great video though, and a great idea

    Thanks for the video Adam. I just got my DC back from "Leon" with the DCHDMI. I plugged it in to my mClassic setup and noticed the signal dropping out on my LG CX TV even with the mClassic set to passthrough. I changed the output setting on the DCHDMI to 960p which isn't listed as being supported by the mClassic but it works great and no more signal drop issues. I felt like 960p looked a bit better on my 4k TV than the 480p setting but it is pretty close.

    On the DC HDMI I believe the 960p and 1080p modes are the same in terms of picture quality. The difference is that in 1080p mode the 960p image has borders making in 1080p for compatibility with TVs that cannot display a 960p image.

    7:06 so its basically the same exact debate with the Genesis. When using Composite things like mesh patterns, Dithering and water effects are hidden because of the lower quality output. Then when using RGB Scart the image is sharper but all those effects that were hidden away become noticeable.

    I have two main issues with this: 1. It is clear that the 480p capture has a smoothing filter on where the 1080p capture does not. So then your first “1080p Upscaled” capture is being smoothed twice, once by the DCHDMI and again by the MClassic. 2. Other than smoothing filters, 1080p looks worse than 960p because 1080p is not an integer scale of 480p where 960p is. You can clearly see the uneven pixel scaling in the 1080p capture thanks to the fact that there is no smoothing. If you then pump that through the MClassic you will get another non-integer scale from 1080p to 1440p, aka an image that looks like hot garbage. Going from 480p through the MClassic will give you an integer upscale of 3x which will yield an objectively better image than scaling it by 2.25x and then again by 1.33x. While your suggestion to use 480p output from the DCHDMI is a good one, your reasoning as to why it looks better is flawed.

  • @AdamKoralik

    @AdamKoralik

    4 жыл бұрын

    No, it's not smoothed twice as explained the non standard timings made it impossible to do so. Unless the 480p mode has additional smoothing features that are automatic and that I'm unaware of the only artificial smoothing done is by the mClassic as stated in the video.

  • @thecygnusserket

    @thecygnusserket

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@AdamKoralik Well that changes things. You clearly state in the video that the 480p capture is "...not including post-filters and things like mCable, mClassic, what have you..." So which is it? Is the 480p capture being processed by the mClassic or not? If you look at the HUD element like the ring icon and compare that between the "480p Native" capture and the "1080p Native" capture you can clearly see the individual (and not evenly scaled) pixels in 1080p where those pixels are obviously smoothed out in the 480p one. That's not something you will get just by upscaling an image by 2.25x. If that capture was indeed native then, as you said, the DCHDMI must be applying some kind of smoothing in 480p mode.

  • @AdamKoralik

    @AdamKoralik

    I think we're not communicating clearly. This video contains four separate versions of footage 480p native, nothing done 480p plus the mClassic. 1080p native, nothing done 1080p plus the mClassic. As a bonus, there's a brief clip of the 1080p mode with the relaxed firmware anti-aliasing option.

    I can deal with the pixels to a point. That actually restores some of that vertical line arcade raster effect in some areas, but it's mixed on a clean screen image then one with rgb effects built in the screen. The other thing I was thinking was wanting to see OSSC's 960p mode with upsample2x being compared to the Mclassic for a sharper, more accurate image. I don't know if you figured out how to get vga levels configured properly yet?

    Good solution imo would've been for the DC HDMI to have 720p support; it's a native scale of 480p but is also one of the more mainstream resolutions so perhaps the mClassic could've worked with it a little more; plus it'd be readable to capture devices which often don't have support for the more PC-centric resolutions like 960.

    Very interesting. 🤔 Hey, Adam. Just picked up a black sega sports dreamcast. I'm debating if I should do an hdmi mod. I currently have the kaico hdmi adapter and when paired with the mclassic my tv recognizes it as a real nice 1080p picture as opposed to 480 with just the kaico by itself. Since you mentioned that this hdmi mod at 480 with mclassic looks best, should I bother with the hdmi mod or keep with the kaico / mclassic combo? What would you do / think is best? I'm gonna send it off to get it recapped / bios modded and all that anyways.

    Dreamcast with the official VGA box, on a PC CRT monitor, is the best the Dreamcast will look(with real hardware). I've used an HDMI modded Dreamcast with an Mcable and its to pixelated. The small scanlines you get between 480p on a PC CRT act as anti aliasing, and in turn the picture looks razor sharp.

    The RetroTink2X can't handle progressive (480p) video properly, although its great for retro consoles running 480i/240p. The OSSC can handle 480p from component no problem and you can connect the mClassic to the HDMI output. However, you should note that the mCable will poop on any scanlines you might have enabled with the OSSC. So my recommendation is the OSSC with scanlines off with 480p passthrough to the mClassic to your TV for your PS2 and Xbox

So citrus made a mod for the Dreamcast and even tho there is a 1080p option using it shows more stuff that it shouldn’t? Isn’t that the whole point of this mod other than making it a digital to digital solution? Almost sounds like the 1080p option is pointless. I have lg OLED c7 it too doesn’t support 1440p. • @AdamKoralik

    Maybe, the mClassic has some changes. As I recall on their website, they "updated their algorithm", added 1440p support across all gaming platforms, and added a toggle with three modes. On, off, and "retro mode." Which basically forces 4:3. It's definitely a improvement over the mCable, but it's worth getting if you have one is up to you. Personally, I'd say yes.

    M Classic is so good. Refines everything, colour, details, frame rate. Improvement is more noticeable on PS3 games. I highly dont recommend the following, but I bought two thinking I might use it on two different setups. Didnt need it that way, so i tried using two, one after another, and it actually makes a subtle but noticeable difference on random fast moving frames. So it makes your games perform and look better during actual gameplay not just during still frames or slow rendering. If you dont think it makes a difference, try playing with it for a bit and then go into bypass mode. I bet you wont be able to play without it.

And for all the Sony fanboys I had a ps2 and still do but I believe it was a overhyped underpowered machine and the dvd player made it what it is.
