mClassic Review - Make All Your Games Look Better! - Adam Koralik
Ойындар
It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing a new product from Marseille Inc, the creators of the mCable, this is the mClassic. It's an HDMI dongle that essentially acts as an external graphics processor for any signal thrown at it. What does that mean? It makes your videogames look better, like, a lot better.

A couple things you should probably know to avoid confusion: In the context of digital video, "Buffering" does not mean "to shine up/improve" like you seem to think. It means "to come between" or "hold then forward." When you stream online video and it buffers, it means that a buffer (hold) is filling with data and it will begin playing that data when it has filled to a certain point. This is similar to what a frame buffer does when transmitting or displaying digital video. The image being transmitted line-by-line is transferred/stored into a buffer until it can be assembled into a complete frame and then either processed, displayed, or retransmitted. In short, buffering=delay, not enhancement. Most enhancements require buffering of at least one full frame which is why a framebuffer is considered a bad thing for latency (OSSC has none, Framemeister does). Next, "depth" has nothing to do with color enhancement. Color depth is how many bits were used per-pixel to specify a color. That is internal to the game's rendering engine or graphics hardware and does not change no matter what you do after the source image has been created. Whatever it does to the color should absolutely never be described as "increasing color depth." When someone talks about "deep blacks" or whatever it has absolutely nothing to do with color depth either but I can see where such phrasing might lead you to think so. These are two things I hear you say in most videos about these things which really undermine and distract from what you are trying to explain so I hope you incorporate these two small suggestions.
I swear by the mCable. This looks awesome, too.

Hey John, I know you're big fan of retro games so... Have you ever tried this one with older consoles like the gamecube+eon mark II? I'm a little intrigued about the results... Both are expensive..

@@josemsanchez80 I got the M classic a few weeks ago, I am using it on a PC gaming monitor and it makes my PS4 games ( combined with the monitor ) look like a PS4.5. I have tried it with the PS3 and XBOX 360 and it makes them look super clean and sharp and gives them a great updated image overall. I am actually getting my old XBOX ONE out and going through the store to pick up 360 and original XBOX games to enjoy them all over again with a improved look to them over all. Its expensive BUT the next gen machines are going to be hard to find for a while, and so why not grab something that will make you want to play your old games all over again with a new coat of paint on them.
Thanks for the advice to set my HD consoles back a resolution first, never even considered doing that. Usually I wait for you to thouroughly examine a product before I jump on it but the mClassic was simply too exciting for me NOT to be an early backer. I love it! Great video, as usual.
Glad you mentioned lowering the resolution of your console (480p/720p) and letting the mclassic do the upscaling & smoothing.

Great video, I've had the original cable since release and just ordered this new one for my bedroom. Glad to see you figured out you can use a splitter with it! In a previous video I remember you mentioned not being able to do that. Your pound ps2 cable inspired me to restore my phat launch PS3 just so I can enjoy crispy ass PS2 content. Great job keep it up!
This is a little bit of subject but I spent about five hours of my graveyard shift looking at all your retrospective on all the old consoles going into the seventh generation. I love your channel and it’s very informative.

PLEASE do a video on your video game consoles setup!!! It would be sick to see the consoles that are hooked up to your tv!👍 (If you could) show like all the consoles starting up! 😅
Thank you, Adam, just ordered one for myself. Have a PS3 Slim, this will be a great addition to full Metal Gear series play through (and not only). :) In fact, I've missed out on whole PS3 generation, and now I have a lot of catching up to do. Slap on top of it's jailbroken and can run ps1/2/3 games. Awesome!
My heart and soul will forever appreciate the breath of fresh air that is, the Shenmue soundtrack. Thanks again, Adam. You rock.
I have a retrotink 5x and and I use it for ps2 and OG Xbox and I have component for both of course. My TV is a LG CX so it supports 1440p which is max output resolution for retrotink 5x. If I bought this what I would I want to set my resolution on the retrotink to? I’m thinking 720p for Xbox and 480p for ps2 but I am unsure and that is why I am asking this question. And would it even be worth it to use with the 5x as well?
Results seems to be impressive as usual on the Dreamcast. I have the Akura and i preordered the mclassic. Looks Amazing! Wonderful review as usual.
I bought the MClassic to clean up PS3, Xbox 360 image and reduce the shimmering jaggies, I am really impressed with this device.
Insane results, Thanks man, base on one of your video/tutorial I ended up ordering these 2 parts mClassic and the EON Super 64 for my Nintendo 64 setup, Looking forward for amazing results, should get it this week, Thanks for your time!!
Question regarding the mClassic: I have a bunch of consoles, so I use an HDMI switch to be able to have them all hooked-up since my TV normally wouldn't have enough ports. In connecting the mClassic, then, would I need one for each console and then plug them into the HDMI Switch, would I just need one and have that where the HDMI Switch meets the television, or would to do both by having an mClassic where the device meets the HDMI Switch and then also where the HDMI Switch meets the Television. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I'm looking into these and it will make a *huge* difference in the cost of upgrading my setups.
In the video there's a mention of setting up multiple HDMI switches going then into one box. I'm usually not a fan of daisy chaining but it makes sense to have the mClassic at the end, just before going into the TV HDMI port. I have a lot of HDMI ports going into the TV (going to be north of 12) that I handle via 5-port switchers. What would be a good final piece to kind of condense of all of these HDMI switchers and sources into one final box to get the best benefit from the mClassic (ie. not have to buy two or move it around all the time). Obviously lag is a concern, but anything a frame or below is acceptable because of how weird the setup is. EDIT: Honestly though, what a time to be alive where all of this is possible.
I love watching Adam rip open the packages like it’s Christmas morning
Great video! Helped me decide if I wanted the mClassic or not. I love it so far. Only have used it on my GameCube but notice a big difference. Now I need to find a HDMI switcher and I’m good to go.
For the Switch I am kinda considering getting this because most Switch games don't look too great on my 65 inch 4K TV. Games with resolutions lower than 1080p are very noticeable. Take Astral Chain for example, it's 900p and has jaggies. Wonder how much this thing would help.

You answered all my questions! Amazing video. Thank you so much... Now I need to buy an mClassic. :P
16:07 Adam I know how you feel about composite cables but honestly man it looks pretty good for the yellow cable
Great video, but two things I think you should take note of: - While the footage looks pretty good, but I noticed that the Luigi's Mansion footage looked darker, specifically it looked like it was crushing the blacks. Also, on the Saturn and OG Xbox comparisons, the browns look a little more red than they should. - You said most Wii U games run at 1080p; this is incorrect, most are 720p like the PS3 and 360. Like the 360, the Wii U just does it's own internal scale to 1080p. For the Xbox 360, you'll need to figure out on your own which games are 1080p, but I can tell you every 1080p game on the Wii U is: Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Super Smash Bros., Rayman Legends, and Darksiders Warmastered Edition.

I think that crushing blacks with Luigi' s Mansion might actually have something to do more with the color design of the game more than the cable.
@Supersayainpikmin

If that's the case, than it shouldn't happen with the official component cables, and it doesn't seem to be caused by the GC HDMI by the comparison.
Great video! For the Original Xbox, I've been using a Volantech component to HDMI converter which works really well and what I recommend over a Pound or Hyperkin cable. I may test it with the mClassic once it comes out..

I was wondering about this solution. I have official component cables and would hate to out them in retirement for an inferior hdmi adapter.
Those square generic Scart to Hdmi converters can output 800x600 @50/60hz. Do you know if the mClassic supports this input resolution? I have this idea that a PS2 or Gamecube will look better this way rather than squashing upscaled 720p back to 4:3 with retro mode. Do you have any way to test this? Thanks

Great freaking question, I was wondering the very same thing.
Deinterlacing 480i is not "line doubling." Line doubling is what the RetroTink 2X or OSSC in 2X mode do with 240p. 480p>480i is just "deinterlacing."
@MajorTom106

Stumbled upon your video when searching about this. I bought one and it arrived yesterday. I can't see any difference in the Switch, at all. It makes Pokémon Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness look AMAZING (ideal for my channel) but the Switch/PS4 don't look any different. How did you connect it to the Switch? Using the little HDMI extender that comes with it?
@AdamKoralik

Correct, use that extension cable.
Question, could you plug the mclassic plugged into an HDMI switch with like 4 inputs, and one hdmi out to tv. have all your hdmi adapters going to your consoles.. and that way just switch between them without having to swap the mclassic into each different console when you want to play it? Same with the mcable?

Nice Review Adam. I am really tempted to get the m cable classic although I am the owner of Framemeister ralready. I am avid Gamecube und Dreamcast User and can use HDMI on both devices. 480p does not seem the Framemeister's specialty and I have been looking for some ways for quite some time already to enhance the 480p Signal of these consoles. The m cable classic might be a decent solution for my problems.
@LarsIsReal

I do own the Framemeister and the current Mcable Gaming Edition. E.g. for GameCube, Wii, Dreamcast the Framemeister scales the input up 720p. Then the Mcable (which goes directly into my 4kTV) scales that to 1080p. My Nintendo Switch goes to my Framemeister as well, but I use HDMI passthrough.
I’m planning on plugging this into the HDMI out on my av receiver. Will this pass through 4k HDR signals unaltered? I have a Vizio TV so I need to plug all my devices into one HDMI port on my tv (Only HDMI 1 is HDMI 2.0 and ARC compliant). I want to upscale my Nintendo Switch but I also don’t want to lose HDR on my PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Thanks for your awesome content.
Great vid Adam - love your work! Would there be any noticeable benefit running an Ultra HDMI modded N64 through this, with its output resolution set to 720p?

Man, I've been watching your Channel from more than 5/6 years and you are allways talking about how to have the best video quality of your consoles but your videos have the same quality from years ago and nowadays it looks bad and blurry. You need to update your camera or use your phone (that videos looks infinitely superior than your normal videos). Your content is excellent and you are one of my favorite youtubers, but your videos looks like S-Video at best, you need to look like HDMI!! It's just a constructive critic, don't take it in the wrong way.
Thank you so much for this video, it was very articulate and extremely informative.
Sorry if I'm dense and missed the explanation, but what does "Sim 480p" mean in reference to the PS2, etc. capture footage? I assume it's 480i output converted to 480p, but what converter device is used here? Any other relevant info? Thanks.

@AdamKoralik
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I leave it on all the time. As for HDMI switches, I like ZettaGuard ones.
What would be the best monitor or tv for retro gaming? I'm currently using a Sony MFM-HT95 19" LCD TV but nots not a hd tv.
With a modded PS2, there's a way to burn games to disc with a patch for the resolution to get most games running in 480p, and another patch to get widescreen on games that don't support it or screw it up(like Bully). I have a modded PS2 and still don't wanna go through all that trouble. Basically, I guess PS2 diehards like me will have to wait for the Hyperkin Retrostation 2 in 5 years to get some companies competing for sexy PS2 resolution. Why do I love the crappiest looking console? Maybe modded PS3's will be more accessible in the future, those things are amazing.

Thank's for the information I really appreciate it because I'm like you in a lot of ways because I love my old classics consoles and my old game's and I always will. I found a old CRT TV at the goodwill and it has brought back so many great memories of when I was a much younger man. Keep gaming and keep winning.💯👍💯
I think I need a retroTink before I need a mClasic.
I was really anticipating this video. The mCable is an expensive HDMI cable and it's benefits are locked in the cable. I don't need more cables, so this is the right solution I was waiting for. It did mess with the weird aspect ratio of the SNES, but the older stuff is where I noticed the color depth change, at least through KZread's compression. It's crazy how tech has advanced to help us with our older content. Really the next thing I'm hoping for is a solution to reintroduce the "fake transparency"/color gradients, that dithering gave us with our older games, like on Genesis and most Saturn games through those old CRT's. I've heard of this being emulated on PC, but it's in it's infancy from what I could tell.
I was thinking a lot about all of the options for component and upscaling. You've been very helpful with my questions. I'm actually considering going with the Levelhike for all of my consoles SNES, GameCube and PS2. I originally was going to go with either retrovision component + retrotink + mclassic for PS2 .....and Carby + mclassic for GameCube. But, my TV only puts out 720p,1080i max resolution(it doesn't do 1080p). The levelhike upscales to 720p, the max resolution for my TV, and has a 4:3 aspect ratio option anyway. I'm wondering if it'd be a waste to get the Carby and all of those component cables with an mclassic if the TV is only going to do 720p anyway? Any thoughts? Maybe I can save some money with the Levelhike if the picture isn't going to be better with the other options. I'm just thinking that if I get component + retrotink for PS2 and Carby for GameCube it will make 480p. If I add the mclassic on top, and my tv max progressive scan output is 720p, wouldn't the mclassic at that point be a waste because it's still only going to be able to do 720p?

Thank you for this informative video. Do you mind redoing some of this captures on 5th gen systems, but outputting to 720p to the mClassic and outputting to 4k? This thing seems to really like 720p and I would like to know how you would go about up scaling 240p and 480i to 720p. I know the frameister can do it, but maybe there is a cheaper way? The best I can find is this KanexPro AV S-video 4k HDMI converter that can output to 720p. I think there is a SCART upscaler to 720p. But who knows if any of these scalers use appropriate deinterlacing techniques. OSSC can do 240p and 480i to 720p, but then when I play my dreamcast OSSC spits out 960p which mclassic doesn't seem to know what to do with.
@AdamKoralik
4 жыл бұрын
It's highly advised not to do that. The closer you are to the original resolution the better for the mClassic and mCable. Also, it only upscales to 4K for film/video, not games so I can't really test that. Though, one thing I wish I could have done was capture in 1440p, I couldn't or I would have.

Set the PS3 to 720p mode. In the case of most games, put the mClassic in retro mode. Most PS2 games don't have native widescreen support.
I just have a question about how you use it for PS2. In comparison to using the Retrotink 2X with the older mCable for PS2 games, as you showed with Twisted Metal Head On, would you say this component/retrotink/mClassic combo delivers similar or superior results? And how consistent is it with a variety of games? That's how I want to use my PS2 for potential capture, since the various deinterlacing methods I've tried for a bunch of different of games vary in quality and compatibility. I'm sure you know that PS2 games deinterlace and scale differently depending on which game it is. Also, would you say that the HD Retrovision PS2/PS3 cables are superior to Sony OEM cables? I've got the PS3 style component cables, the ones with the silver color scheme, so I'm wondering which is better.

I use one by Zetta (should be easy to remember for you :P ). I don't use the original Wii through HDMI, as you point out. So I don't have an ideal solution. The Hyperkin cables will probably do fine, but the Wii U is going to be a better bet.

Thanks for the quick reply. wasn't sure if you would have time to respond. Btw would you also suggest the hyperkin cables for the ps2? or do you use a modded ps3?
Thanks for the review was waiting for this encase the regular one was for some reason better. ordered myself the double pack one for myself and another for a friend.
I'm curious, why since their first Mcable range launched and now the 2019 Mclassic are Marseille using at best, 8 bit panel 1.4b HDMI specs. Adam do you know when they are refreshing their products to at least HDMI 2.Ob or above for next gen consoles & screens ?

No idea.
Good review. Yeah this is great for my PlayStation classic and Xbox 360. I bought 2 of them. What sucks is the hdmi 1.4 standard. Trying to hook it up to a 4k tv doesn't work out well as it has terrible bandwith. Why they didn't make this hdmi 2.0 I have no idea. But it does a good job for retros and is way cheaper than the mcables I bought 2 years earlier.
Could I connect this to 3 consoles at once (using switch box) so this dongle into back of TV, HDMI cable out to a hdmi switcher. With sources of consoles going into the switcher?

Hey Adam! Thanx again for great video! I have PS3/PS4/X360/Switch in my setup. All coming through hdmi switcher. So I should switch output resolution in hdmi switcher to 720p and mClassic will work properly?

Sorry if I missed this in your video but I was wondering if there is a good interaction between the framemeister and the mcable classic? My framemesiter is the hub to all my consoles so I was wondering if it would be worth here?

Yeah, though it would be recommended, in most cases, to set the Framemeister resolution down to 480p.

Nice video Adam. Appreciate the demo and explanations.
When you say switch console to 720 do you mean go into the settings on a switch or PS3 and there is a way to select that? Then Mclassic will upgrade to 1080P from there?
@AdamKoralik
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, switch it to 720p on the PS3 itself. The mClassic will upscale to 1080p.
Id like to know if the image is better if you plug mcable into the classic instead of a hdmi, on indiegogo theyre doing a mClassic and Mcable combination (the video one though, not the gaming one)

I would like to know this information as well I just hope Adam see this and responds to you question. It seems he doesn't always respond to newer asked questions. But I'm like you I would really like yo know the answer as well or maybe he just doesn't know for sure.
Just ordered one after watching this and seeing some videos from Marseille themselves showing off key Switch games that get a noticeable visual improvement from the mClassic. But one system I want to test it on, that I've never seen anybody mention and isn't even listed on the back of the box for probably obvious reasons, is the PlayStation TV/Vita TV. The Vita TV supported up to 720p same as the original Vita handheld, a lot of games run at that resolution. It's just a straight HDMI connection so it should work just fine and I'm curious to see what games like Persona 4 Golden and Freedom Wars look like with the mClassic plugged in.

Might I suggest you take a peep at Marseille's video on this exact scenario: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6p_xNGLZcubp5M.html
Aha! I was waiting for this one 😊 Thanks Adam !
Hello Adam! Amazing video, love your content. I have two questions: 1. I wanna use the Mclassic with a Backwards Compatible 60gb Ps3 for my PS2 and Ps1 games, on which resolution would you recommend me to put my ps3 so that the Mclassic can do the best it can to improve the image?. 2. I would love to capture footage from said ps3 to a capture card, so my question is. Does the Mclassic disable Hdcp? Thank you so much beforehand. And keep up the excellent work.
@AdamKoralik

1: 720p generally. 2: the mClassic does nothing to HDCP coding.

Hey Adam, can I ask for a recommendation? I mainly want this thing for my Dreamcast, Saturn, and PS2. What device would you suggest to upscale the Saturn and line double the PS2 before sending it off to the MClassic? I wouldn’t want something like the Framemister, as that would be overkill for what I need, you know? Are there any good devices that simply upscale and line double over HDMI?
@AdamKoralik

The RetroTink 2X. That's what I used for the Saturn and PS2 footage in this video.
@cloudskat3r
4 жыл бұрын
Adam Koralik But I thought the RetroTink didn’t support sound. The setup I have, les use the Saturn for an example here, I have everything running into a amplifier, that means everything is being output over one HDMI port to my TV. I was thinking of putting the MClassic on the one output, but I need something that will take an HDMI input, bring it up to 480p, and output it back to HDMI. Sorry for the long explanation, but do you know of anything like that?
So is there any benefit if you plug in the mclassic to the output of a Framemeister?
@AdamKoralik
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it's recommended to set the Framemeister to 480p output. Honestly, it boils down to what console you're using.
I'm revisiting this video and have been using the m classic with the EON super 64 for the N64 ever since seeing your videos here and I want to thank you again for your excellent in depth analysis. I have continued to personally chose it over the UltraHDMI mod for the N64 because while not cheap, it's still in my opinion, more cost effective than modifying the console, for the results I want, at least in the mods current state and price. Your videos helped me a lot, more than any other source on youtube or elsewhere so thank you for your work.
Adam, I'm morbidly behind on your content, but I saw this on time and spent money because of you. I think that makes up for it haha! I've been meaning to get one of these for a while, but I'm striking while the iron is hot on the new iteration.
Whelp this sold me on it. I really needed to see what it could do to 5th gen stuff especially and I think it is doing exactly what is promised. Can't wait for it to arrive.
Can you plug this into the hdmi in your tv and connect a hdmi switcher to use for multiple consoles? Backed the 2 pack and I’m hoping to speed this as far as possible
@AdamKoralik

Not exactly, the mClassic can't be plugged into your TV. However, you can plug it into the end of your switch box which feeds to the TV, then all your devices going to the switch box will work.
Hi adam,just wondering if you could check out and let me know if the mclassic can upgrade the graphics on a Dreamcast using a vga to 1080p upscaler?cos I have already got a ex pro 720 to 1080p vga to hdmi upscaler and wether it’d be worth getting the mclassic to add to it?,thanks and laters

Oh, about the Wii as a Game Cube: so with Wii component cables, you can easily output component at 480p. At the moment, I plug that directly into my HDTV, and it looks fine. I also have a RetroTink which, infamously, won't take a 480p signal, it won't even pass it through. Would I be better off running my Wii component cables through the RetroTink and then the mClassic with progressive turned off (outputting 480i component into the RetroTink)?
Hi Adam! Excellent review men! Suggestion: Do you have a summary video about what could be the best retro hdmi combination for retro consoles? This video for sure suggest one of this elements should be mClassic but with too many devices in the market (also you have made some videos about most of them, thanks for that!) it’s hard to know how to get the best video quality for each console.... like a “HDMI Retro connections - 2019 list”. Thanks again for the good quality reviews!!!
