According the Mersaille’s website, you’re supposed to set the output resolution of the Switch, 360, Wii U, etc. to 720p for best results. That may seem counterintuitive, but it does a much better job upscaling and cleaning the image this way.

It also helps to have a display that supports 1440p for the most impressive upscaling, it all but removes the aliasing of PS3 games on my Samsung set - the games look significantly better across the board.

Judging by the comments, I won't even bother to see this "review". Haha. You guys know more than this youtuber.

You have to set the render resolution on the Switch to 720p for best results on the mClassic. If you have it set to 1080p resolution output, then it's not going to work it's magic on a 540p internal game resolution if the mClassic is being told it's being fed a 1080p signal.

The results seem so mixed on this thing. I don't know who to believe

I use it with my PS3 on my 4K television it looks alot better in my opinion. Great video man..

Really appreciate your honest review! I’m wanting to use this on my Wii U specifically for backwards compatible Wii games. Given that those are all output in 480p and are of similar graphical quality to the GC I’m hoping it’ll help smoothen out the horrid jaggies on my 4K tv. Do you think it’ll work? Thanks for the vid!

I just got one and the results on my 4K tv weren't great. There was an improvement but it was minimal on the Switch, PS3, Wii U and Wii games I tested. A lot of 4K tv's don't support 1440p natively so the mClassic will output 1080p instead. There's an adapter called "EVanlak Hdmi Edid Emulator" which tricks a 4K tv into accepting 1440p but it didn't work for me. I got a message on my tv which read "Video Format Not Supported". I tested the same games on my 1080p monitor and that did give me a huge upgrade in visuals especially on Wii games which look terrible on my monitor without the mClassic. It seems like it's a device that some people will benefit from and others won't depending on their setup.

@@TheBadElf I did end up getting one and was very pleased with the results on my tv. I’ve mostly used it for wii games which get a notable improvement, they look like a jaggy mess without it. Can’t say for anything other than that though. Definitely happy with my purchase but like you say it depends on the set up and the selection of games that benefit most from it is fairly niche, it’s no wonder people are disappointed when hooking up their Switch.

Have you noticed any darkness on the image quality when using this ? I was testing it with some 9f my ps2 games and it got super dark on the quality and I couldn't adjust it on my TV. Though I was in game mode so idk if that was the cause.

@lilg8017 so I found out that it was the HDMI adaptor I was using for PS2. The mclassic would not work well with it and I had to get a whole new adapter. But I've noticed that it works pretty well on my series x.

@@MattsGeekCorner I just use it on the 360 and ps3. The last game I tried using it on was NFS The Run and I couldn't hardly see anything in the intro. But I notice it on just about every game. It could be that I'm using it on a 1440p monitor instead of TV.

The mClassic has its niche with 480p. PS2 has so few games that feature the resolution that it’s not reliable. I use a Retrotink to get the 480p on that and then the mClassic. The GameCube is perfect the way it is. I use a similar setup myself. As for anything neeer, I rarely bother. If you want the Switch to look better, drop the resolution to 720p and you will see an improvement. Do the same for the Xbox 360. Both consoles have internal scalers and the mClassic needs a native resolution. Keep up the great work with these videos.

Let me ask you. Have you used it with an OG Xbox? One with a converter to HDMI or composite to HDMI then MClassic? Thinking of that but don't know if it is worth it.

@@user-wi3tc1ek8f Many times. I have a few videos with side by side comparisons using it with the Xbox.

from my experience using the mclassic, I've found that it can definitely help certain games, like Super Smash Bros Ultimate for example, sure it looks nice without the mclassic but it could look better, and it does, just giving the 1080p of the game to it makes it look nicer on a 1080p screen or bring it to 1440p.

Mclassic works really well for Sega Dreamcast when paired with a Kaico HDMI converter. Makes the visuals much more on par with an Xbox 360- (anti-aliasing, smoothing) but no its not a miracle worker. Kinda overhyped.

Hey ! I have a mClassic and I'm also disappointed by the results with different consoles : I couldn't see any changes with or without it just while playing and using my eyes ... but I don't have a 4K TV so I still believe you need a 4K TV to see something happening ... or not ;)

so far from my experience : ps3 xbox one dreamcast have shown the most difference when in use …. especially if your using a backwards compatible ps3 while playing ps2 games looks amazing 🤘🏾 my monitor can natively output 1440p so it cleans up kinda nice

So, the logic used by the mClassic works best when used on the native rendering resolution of the system. As such, you should switch the resolution to 720p if the game runs at that resolution.

Try one chained to an EON 64 and an N64. I’d like your take on that. :)

You need to lower the switch native output to 720p if running it on a 1080p screen, It will then kick in. It won’t upscale a native 1080p on a 1080p screen. I use it with my switch at 1080p on a 1440p monitor and it is a game changer!

I had it set to passthrough and my xbox ypbpr was genuinely massively disappointing. Image had massive artefacts. Having it plugged INTO another hdmi also caused artefacts, when completely removed from the hdmi port, my original xbox had zero artefact for a cheap ypbpr cable. Jet Set Radio Future plays in full hd. Ironically, removing the mclassic made it look like a new graphics card. Selling mine, but then again i am using a retrotink 5x, so the signals must be getting mixed up. Im sure it would look a lot better for consoles modified to an hdmi port directly.

You need to sort out your videos in future and use some VST compression because the music is loud as hell and your talking is very low which is so annoying because it means we have to turn up the volume to hear your talking then when the music plays we're deafened so have to turn the volume down. Then when you start talking again we can barely hear you. I use VST compression in Magix Vegas Pro when I do videos so audio levels are pretty consistent.

After converting the Famicom that converted to RGB output with "RGB BLASTER" to HDMI with "Mcbazel ODV-GBS-C", I up-scanned it with "Marseilles mClassic" The screen was bright and clear, and blacks were output as pure black. I'm happy with the results

It would be amazing if someone made an interface to connact your switch to a PC and run the post processing on the GPU instead of this tiny thing.

You can do this with a zero delay capture card and use OBS to display the picture. While your game is running thru the PC on OBS display. You can either use Lossless Scaling application or ShaderGlass application to upscale the picture from the OBS display.

I use it to upscale my game cube and love it, also good for upscaling my switch on my 1440p monitor

I use it on my switch to a 1440p monitor , it scales the 1080p signal to 1440p and it looks great , easy to see the difference when you switch to pass through and back to upscaling , I’m happy with it

the upgrade is so slight it's a waste of 100 bucks unless you're rich

Best consoles to use is dreamcast and og xbox You need hdmi dongles to connect it Get 480p output signal Or it wil not work

The GameCube is where the mClassic really shines. A GCHD MKii and an mClassic is my setup and it works brilliantly especially with the 480p content.

+1 to this. I really noticed a massive difference with Metroid Prime and Super Monkey Ball. I can never go back now.

If you use a 1080p tv it's pretty hard to get it running 2k. If you use a 4k tv, it's another story

Mclassic works best on my modded wii. Tried it with switch and its ok just have a 1080 screen so really just put the work horse on my homebrewed wii and it drastically helps the 480p signal from the adapter in between.

Mine worked. Used it like 3 times. Then it just stopped working and I can't do anything about it. Not worth the money at all.

No-one has done more testing on youtube with mcables, and mclassic combos on a ps3. I now use mclassic and 4k gamer pro. All of my content is upscaled in real time to 4K

Why skip N64 and PS1?

Good question but with sadly a boring answer. N64 doesn't have native RGB output so I had no way of using this with it. The PS1? It didn't look any different with it, so it didn't add anything that I hadn't already covered in the video.

Yeh, the mclassic does nothing with 480i/576i content. It only works with a progressive signal. Use GSM on the PS2 set to 480p you'll see a massive difference :)

Ive always used a retrotink paired with an mclassic and personally i think the mclassic is great. Its especially great with n64 since n64 even with a retrotink just looks like bad sprites even though its 3d. The fxaa from the mclassic fixes that up beautifully. Photofast 4k gamer pro is superior though with any other console, it just doesnt have fxaa so it doesnt help n64 as much as the mclassic. But otherwise its image quality is far, far superior.

Why doesn't Nvidia make us a standalone retro gaming upscaler? 😢

With a 4k tv the difference is really noticeable

I use the Mclassic with a gaming monitor and it does make ps4 and Xbox one games look much better. I put the console in 4k mode , downscale the 4k using a HDMI splitter then put it into the Mclassic which outputs to 1440p and the results are a nice bump up in visuals. If you can not find ps5 it is a good alternative to tide you Over, plus it's a cheaper way to make your games look Better than spending £ 600 on ps5.

Unfortunately the mclassic sucks with the PS2 in particular because most of its content is 480i which just sucked anyway - the OSSC is a far superior product, I never tested the mClassic on GameCube since I have GCHD-MKII which again is just superior. Im not really sure what I think of my mClassic, I don't feel ripped off parsay but I don't feel like I got what was advertised either.

The mClassic would compliment the GCHD on your GameCube. Try adding it to the setup, it smooths out those jaggies and ups the resolution to 1080p even 1440p. The results of running the GCHD without the mClassic compared to with it activated are night and day. I feel like the mClassic was made for the GameCube.

It's not worth it with the little it does; it's better to look for something cheaper. It might work in specific games with certain resolutions, but you'll end up spending more on the cable than on the system you're using. There are better alternatives out there. Don't waste your money on this.

I think the best way will always be emulators, I have a Windows 10 laptop and have Megadrive, Super Nes, NES, Gamecube etc..emulators on it and I also have a pair of USB Super Nes game pads. I have my laptop connected to my 55" Sony 4k tv and the emulators look excellent plus emulators and game ROMS are free too.

A happy mClassic user here. 2 important things to note. 1 - The USB wire needs to be connected to a reliable source of power. Sometimes some monitors are not able to provide enough juice and the mClassic then powers off or passes through. 2 - FPS is the key for judging mClassic. Games with a 30fps ceiling is interpreted as 30Hz by mClassic. According to the spec, 1080p 30 hz and 720p 30hz gets the 4k upscale. For this reason, blu rays are upscaled nicely to 4K too, since they are 24hz. 1080p and 720p 60hz only get a 1440p upscale. Please keep in mind that 50hz games get little to no boost. So according to spec sheet, it performs well 90% of the time. Something to keep in mind when buying and reviewing please.
