    Thank you for showing what healthy magnolias trees should look like! I bought 5, 8-foot tall Little Gems in August to block a flood light a neighbor installed and transplanted them from 15-gallon buckets to 50-gallon tubs. Transplant shock caused them to lose about half their leaves - did your trees do this? They are just now recovering and producing flowers but the foliage is growing back very slowly. Hopefully there will be a spurt in foliage growth in the Spring (Zone 9A). Your tree foliage looks twice as dense as mine.

  • @Linasgardens

    Thank you! When I bought these trees, they were only about foot and a half, maybe two at most so they were pretty young and may have taken transplant shock better than older trees? That’d be my guess. They also all came out of their original containers pretty easily for me at planting so that might’ve helped too and no they didn’t lose any leaves at all except some in autumn which is what they normally do. I guess I was lucky with my magnolias. Glad to know that yours are recovering. I’m sure they’ll start establishing roots and putting out lots of new leaves in no time!

    I would move the Kay parris to the property line and prune in a flat espalier from front and back. That treatment would give the plant some room to spread out , and give you more privacy. Magnolia responds very well to pruning. No worries. Do it now while your Kay parris is young. Steel yourself to cut those pretty branches off. You want to cut to the main trunk, and in a flat plane front and back. Like the palm of your hand with fingers spread. Choose one branch as the central terminal to quickly develop height and to reduce congestion later. Every spring you will thin by pruning out only some of these front branches that have developed. Prune them back to the backbone scaffold. Prune on the front side and on the back. The south side will have the most flowers and the best growth, so choose that spot to replant your Kay parris accordingly, so that you will see the lion’s share.

    Really to know that magnolias respond well to pruning! I don’t know about training them into espalier though… I kind of love them for their round and dense form right now but then again, I’ve never grown them to maturity before so I guess I’ll find out if they’ll ever be too dense for my liking. Thank you for the advice! I like hearing different opinions. P.S. My Kay Parris is on the south side of the yard receiving 8-10+ hrs sun and yes it has produced lots of flowers for such a young tree☀️

    Hi Lina, I'm considering placing 4 Little Gems in large potters. I've had a 15 gallonish gem in a half whiskey at my old home and it did okay. I've never heard of Kay Paris. Do you recommend one of over the other for a planter? I guess what they say about covering them in below freezing is overrated, because yours look to have survived just fine.

  • @Linasgardens

    Hi Jared, what you’re thinking of doing is so interesting to me. When I went to the flower and garden show last year, I saw many magnolia trees in large containers (I believe they were Little Gem) and I always wondered how well they’d do in the long run, have they been grown like that since young, or did they put them their just for the show… etc. So! please come back and let me know how it goes for you! I’m afraid I’m not much help as I’ve never grown neither Kay Parris nor Little Gem in pots. And so far I haven’t seen much difference between the two other than growth rate. They’re both dwarf varieties but at this rate, I’d suspect that Kay Parris might end up being bigger and taller at maturity? I’m guessing that because at 3+ years, my Kay Parris is already almost 9 feet tall. You’re right about them being cold hardy. They both really are. Other than some mulching, I haven’t done anything at all to protect them from harsh winter days (I live in zone 8b PNW) and honestly I feel like you don’t have to do any protection because they’re not winter flowering plants. With winter flowering plants like my camellias, I do a lot because even though hard freeze won’t kill the plant, it will almost certainly kill off buds and flowers. Also I’m growing them in containers so roots are above ground. Anyway.. I’m babbling now. Best of luck with your Little Gems! And if you can get your hands on Kay Parris, I say go for it too! I love mine. It’s fast growing, lovely growth habit, super large flowers - a real gorgeous specimen!

    Awesome kay parris. I just got the tree after seeing your video, to comp my little gem. However, I noticed the leaves are significantly lighter in color compare to my little gem magnolia. is that your experience? The leaves also look more like the sweetbay magnolia?(as it is a bit long and elongated?) I almost feel like this may not be a kay parris tree, now that i looked at your video a bit more.

  • @Linasgardens

    @Linasgardens

    Жыл бұрын

    How young is your tree? I remember vaguely when I got my Kay Parris as a young tree (2 feet tall) that the leaves were lighter shade of green when they first sprouted and the brown underside was also not as prominent as it is now as a 3 yr-old tree. I have a sweetbay magnolia also. But sweetbay magnolias have white/silver undersides so that’s one distinctive feature. Another is that sweetbay is deciduous in my zone whereas Kay Parris is evergreen. Just by looking at it, it’s hard to tell the leaves of Kay Parris and Little Gem apart in terms of color although I notice that my Kay Parris has slightly narrower and pointier leaves than Little Gem’s. I hope you got yourself a Kay Parris which is what you wanted. If not, you must contact the store as they’ve probably made a mistake! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Happy Gardening 🌸🌿

    Thanks for the interesting video! I already have an magnolia Alta in my garden and now I want another magnolia. I'm just choosing between these two! Everywhere write about Kay Perris, that the same size as the Magnolia Little Gem, but your Kay Perris is taller! Tell me, please, do you trim the crown for density? My garden is really small so I need a compact size. Or cut the plant

  • @Linasgardens

    @Linasgardens

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi! Thank you. I’m glad you found the video interesting. Yes my Kay Parris is bigger now but it was also planted a full year prior to Little Gem so it’s older. I find that Kay Parris has a faster growth rate but I can’t say for sure yet if it’s going to be bigger and taller than Little Gem at maturity. They’re both dwarf varieties of Magnolia Grandiflora so should be good for small-sized gardens. No I haven’t had to prune or trim the crown at all. I’ve left it to grow completely naturally and as you can see, it has a nice dense form. It really is a graceful specimen. Personally I love both Kay Parris and Little Gem but Kay Parris is a little more special to me for its fast growing habit. It’s perfect for where I have it. I needed something to grow tall fast to help block out neighbors’ windows but not to wide because it’s by the walkway and this tree has done me so proud! Good luck with your magnolia! 🌿👍🪴

    Wow 3 Little Gem Magnolias at maturity? They must bring you so much joy. My two little ones definitely have! They’ve done well over the winter even though we had a few rounds of heavy snowfalls. I fertilize once or twice in spring with an all-purpose fertilizer. They’ve been good so far. I never had my soil tested (I’m such a nonchalant newbie!) All I did when I planted them was amend the soil with soil conditioner and compost and dug up all the big rocks. I’d love to hear about your Little Gems though. I feel like I should be taking advice from you :) How big do they get? I have a small yard as you can see and I really hope they’re true dwarf variety of the Southern Magnolia like the label says. Also, do they take well to pruning? I have space for them to grow a taller than wider as I have a hydrangea shrub a few feet behind it on a raised bed. I think I’ll have to prune off a few of the lower branches. Thank you for visiting my garden and leaving a comment. Happy Gardening! 👩‍🌾🌸🌿

    @@Linasgardens Hi Lina, they grow very slow. I bought them in 24” wooden box and after 4 years they are about 12’ high and 6’ wide. Go very easy and infrequent with pruning. The higher you prune the lower branches up the more they become sparse and never seem to go back to denser and bigger leaves like before. Their natural shape is pyramid.

    Beautiful garden! We’re you worried about planting these so close to the house? I thought they had a disruptive root system? We have a Little Gem and want to plant in ground, but yard is small. We can only plant it about 5 ft away from the house😳 is that ok? Have you ever seen any of these succeed in a big pot?

  • @Linasgardens

    @Linasgardens

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you! I planted my Kay Parris about 5-6 foot away from the house too and I hope it’s ok. I knew that actual Southern Magnolia trees can get very large (60-80 ft tall and 40 ft spread) but since Little Gem and Kay Parris are dwarf varieties and will only grow to 15-20 ft tall and 8-10 ft spread, I reckon they’ll be fine. Again, I’ve only just begun. I guess in about 10 years, I’ll know for sure 😅 I have seen them grown in pots! Only once though at a Flower and Garden Festival. It was a rather large pot.. like maybe 30-40 inches across and the tree looked so healthy. If I remember correctly, one of the comments here mentions that they have successfully grown these in containers too. So I think it can be done if that’s what you’d like to try! Good luck! And thank you for stopping by and dropping a comment :) 🌿🌸

    You must be in an area where the soil is naturally acidic. I had two magnolias that died after a year; after some research I found that my high PH soil was the killer. I wish nurseries had the decency to advise buyers about the essential needs of plants. They are living things, after all.

    Leaf drop is Magnolia grandiflora’s biggest drawback. For that reason it is recommended to never limb them up.............. But your yard is way too small to leave the branches to the ground. Your yard is too small for even one Magnolia grandiflora LittleGem, KayParris, TeddyBear,Alta....... These are very wide growing plants. The straight species Magnolia grandiflora is only fit tor the large estate. If it were mine, I might keep the Kay Parris only, and keep it pruned to a tight pyramid. Since you have already removed some lower branches, replace that immediate space under the magnolia with Sarcococca hookeriana. This plant will help to trap the magnolia leaves by the sarcoccoca’s vertical branching habit. But wait until you have some shade under the magnolia before installing the sarcococca.

    Thank you for your input and suggestions! You sound like someone with a lot of experience. My husband used to caution me too about how many trees I have in our yard as he fears they will eventually outgrow the space. I do see where you’re coming from where space is concerned. However, I don’t think these magnolia trees are going to be too big for my yard at 20-25 feet tall and 8-10 feet spread which is what they’ll be at maturity. These are dwarf varieties of Magnolia Grandiflora. But I’ve also heard that some might grow bigger than what the tag says and if that turns out to be the case, I’ll deal with it as I go (although even if that is the case, I still have ample room to play with) For now, I’m so happy with how and where I have them so I don’t think I’m going to go into the trouble of removing/transplanting or pruning into a specific shape or form. As for the leaf dropping, I personally don’t mind at all. I’m a bit of a messy gardener. I let leaves fall and stay or if I feel like it, I’ll rake them up and use as mulch in other parts of the garden. But thank you again for taking the time to advise. I appreciate it. Having said that about my dwarf magnolia trees, I should mention that I am however quite concerned about my Japanese Maple ‘Bloodgood’ because THAT is a much wider growing tree with spread up to 20 feet or possibly more and I have it in the middle of the yard…
