Planting a 17 foot Magnolia Tree & Other Tree Planting Updates

This video was a long time in the making, when we last talked Trees and Shrubs it was April and I immediately started shopping. It’s been a long and still ongoing process but I did find a few trees. This video features the arrival of my prized tree of the renovation, also the biggest, most expensive and the one we’ve been waiting 10 weeks for.

I've ordered a similar 14-15 ft DD Blanchard Southern Magnolia tree here near Franklin, Tennessee. Cost planted will be $2,500 from local of national Moon Valley Nurseries. Like yours, its a very large 14-15 ft tree because I'm 82 yrs old and want to enjoy it. Since it will grow to be twice as wide as your tree is now, I don't understand why you planted your beautiful new magnolia tree so close to your fences. I'm allowing for 30 ft diameter eventually (after I'm long gone). I understand that your new Brackens Brown Magnolia will reach 25 ft wide ... and yet you planted close to your fences. Thank you for sharing your experience. -Bill

Hi Bill, glad you also got a tree you can enjoy. I planted with about 10-12ft each side to the corner of the fence with the intention of limbing up from the bottom to clear the fence eventually. It's been 2 years and we've not cut from the bottom yet, there's still clearance. I realize in the video it may look very close but there's comfortable distance and I like the look of a trunk with the full shape up over the fence with some of the garden tucked underneath it. We are very much enjoying our tree and I hope you enjoy yours as well!

I’m so glad you decided to plant the more mature magnolia. You will not regret it! The fragrance that it adds to the garden is amazing 😻 Don’t freak out when it drops a lot of leaves in the Spring. It’s perfectly normal. The new leaves push out the old ones. I love following your progress and look forward to the next video.

Thanks Mieko! I actually got the warning about the Spring leaves from a few people and feel prepared, my husband will freak out for sure! It was totally worth the splurge, it's a gorgeous tree and definitely the right choice for the space. The flowers have been blooming like crazy up high where I can reach them to smell them but I can't wait till there are some lower down. Hope you're well!

@@Sullivan_Owen , glad others warned you, too. I can’t believe how fast Fall is arriving. As usual I’ve ordered too many peonies, but that’s a good thing, right?😂😉

@@miekowu5139 can't wait to see which ones you ordered, this may be the fewest I've planted in a Fall, I think I only have 5 roots coming!

Love the trees! Had to get a small magnolia because of you...no idea where it is going so letting it grow will let me figure that out.

@@Sullivan_Owen Bracken's Brown...but I just saw several other evergreen types (3 named ones) at a local nursery. I had no idea they were even sold here! In fact, I would not have even looked if you hadn't talked about getting one.

The Magnolia is beautiful, we are in 7a east of you In York County with a mature southern magnolia and we haven’t had any problems with the colder weather. I do need to limb up the one side so looking for some projects to do with the leaves and the time to do it. Love all your selections and the evergreens look beautiful against the stone. I have been on a search for a tri color beech, they are so beautiful! Thanks for the tour! Good luck with your hardscape project.

@@juliej.9200 I loved Jam, we went a few times and Bozeman is a great town. Good to hear about your tree, the nursery is in Bucks County so a little colder and I think they just want me to be diligent for this first winter. Wait till Fall and make a bunch of wreaths with the branches, it’ll last forever! Thanks for watching!
