Karate's SANBON Kumite is WAY cooler than I thought...

Спорт

An exploration of traditional SANBON KUMITE (3 Step Sparring) and how you can evolve it.
This drill often gets criticized for it's inefficacy. But this video attempts to showcase how functional it can be by using it as a template for your training. Inside are UK Seminar snippets of a Sanbon kumite drill I taught with Karate Neuss. Special thanks to Martin and Simo for introducting me to this method and thanks to ‪@lesbubka‬ for organizing this event and inviting me to the UK.

hmm.. guess it depends on the interpretation of a "step". The one we're all used to doing involves 3 literal steps. Kind of funny to think about! Great video

nothing recently! But goju ryu and shotokan before. Have tried to get back into karate the last couple of months having moved locations (DC area now), but didn't find anything that had any dynamic drills like what you or Iain show. Basically all ippon kumite + kata type stuff@@KarateUnity

And ik kyokushin has something they call kumite, but I don't practice that style so idk why they mean by it. In shotokan karate and tang soo do "kumite" is a sparring exercise where the entire class lines up in two lines in front of eachother and you fight with each person for a minute or two then switch to the next person for atleast an hour or so, and until youve fought everyone probably 2-3 times

This is interesting, is this kyokushin? It looks like it, and I ask because depending on the style "kumite" has different meanings referring to different training exercises.

Thanks for your comment, no, not Kyokushin, just a tactical exercise we developed to help you deal with compromising positions.

Which is a great exercise to develop fight IQ and being used to fighting different people of different sizes with different approaches. And well it's hard to fight for two hours straight lol

when doing the drill at minute 2:00. wouldn´t be wise to stay away from the free leg of the opponent?looks like you could get kicked in the head. is just a comment. I like the drill. I practice karate and aikido.

Great observation! The whole point though is to fight from a place where you could get really hurt, and in a compromised position…. so you need to put yourself into vulnerable spots to react from there.
